This school year, when it comes to spending, college students are shelling out less for Izods, and more for iPods.

A recent survey from the National Retail Federation says purchases of computers, Mp3 players, cell phones and other electronics are increasing ($266.08 on electronics compared to last year's $211.89), as laptops become a requirement for many colleges and universities.

A little less than half that amount will be spent by college students and their families on apparel ($118.56). Other categories break down as follows: shoes ($57.85), collegiate gear ($34.52), school supplies ($61.05) and dorm or apartment furniture ($80.06).

Back-to-college and back-to-school spending combined for 2009 will total $47.50 billion, the survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found.

But, even with the uncertainties of the economy, the NRF survey found that college-bound students and their families are still paying a little extra this year, spending an average of $618.12 for 2009, up three percent over last year's $599.38.
