Iranian Police Crack Down on Curvy Mannequins

First designer Mark Fast and stylist Erika Kurihara fell out over his decision to use plus-size models in his Spring 2010 show during London Fashion Week.
Now, Iranian shopkeepers have been warned not to display curvy mannequins, according to Reuters, citing an IRNA news agency report issued yesterday.
Iranian police enforcing Islamic dress codes have also banned mannequins who are not wearing the traditional Muslim headscarf (a Hijab), saying "Using unusual mannequins exposing the body curves and with the heads without Hijabs are prohibited to be used in the shops," according to a statement given to IRNA, the source adds.
The statement also cracked down on displaying neckties in shop windows, as well as the selling of women's underwear by male shopkeepers.
Under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejab, Iran has taken a harder line towards enforcing strict Islamic dress codes and avoiding Western style influences, Reuters reports.
According to the news agency, dress code violations can result in a formal caution and/or police questioning on the first offense, with possible detainment and guidance classes for repeat offenders.
What do you think? Does banning curvy mannequins seem reasonable given Islamic beliefs, or does it seem like an excessive crackdown that could stir up body issues amongst young women?
Islamic dress has been a contentious topic lately -- this country is considering banning Islamic burqas.

Why do you think you have to spam all these stories? They have nothing to do with the story in question.

Iran is basically insane anyway, so this shouldn't surprise anyone.

To each his own. Who says Western civilization is the proper way to live anyway? I hate when America goes into these otherwise strict countries and tries to impose its style of living. America should leave well alone and not corrupt the moral fiber of the other cultures! It isn't as though America is walking on the pedestal of morality as it is!

Since when did America go into Iran and force our dress code on them? Impose our style of living on Iran? How?? America hasn't had any presence there since, oh, about the 1970s. Grow up already and stop being a petulant, indignant, sanctimonious jackass and try to say something relevant or just STFU already!!!

If these countries are so moral why is it countries like this who are behind so many kidnapping and sex-slave operations of our young women? Extremism is never good. Moderation. Unfortunately the US is extreme in the opposite direction and pretty much morally corrupt at this point!

It's not so much about o0ur forcing our views on Iran. It's about the religious/political leaders not giving their people a chance to choose how they want to dress. That would be like saying that all adult males in the U.S. must wear a threepiece business suit. That and the women must wear white blouses and skirts of a certain length.

Moral fiber or repression? Nobody should be able to dictate the things the islamic world tries to control.

I'm thinking both Sol and Demeron are males, no female in their right mind would find this okay, only chauvinistic males would feel it's okay for the males there to keep the women down. How archaic!!

Americans cannot understand Islam. Islam cannot be compared to religions like Christianity because it is more than that, it is a complete political mindset. Christianity does not begin to hint at how to dress, what to eat, what language you need to speak, etc, while Islam clearly states all of those and more. Islam, in my opinion, is dangerous. It is a 7th century feudal mentality that can and will continue to have an arduous time adapting to our 21st century lifestyles. This is evident in the fact that the vast majority of wars being fought on our planet right now is fought in the name of Allah. On the plus side, Islam states that someday the world will be peaceful... that day of course is the day the whole world is muslim. If you abhor women's rights, are a fan of capital punishment, and like slow economies then maybe this wouldn't be half bad.

Your comments about Christianity not dictating what people should eat or wear etc., is not true.
In the Bible it actually says a woman should cover her head when praying, that her hair is her glory (leading some denominations to prevent their women from cutting their hair), not to eat certain foods from the sea, or with cloven hoofs & not to mix meats (ever have a combo pizza?) among many other things. We are also taught by the Bible that the body is a temple which some denominations take to mean that being overweight or having tattoos is sinful - yet many Christians just overlook these Biblical edicts and pick and choose which teachings they will adhere to. There are many more, but you get the gist - your comment is just way off the mark.

You are right, Islam is very oppressive. The people of Iran aren't ignorant to this; the situation is complicated by an unarmed population and a hired army under the mullahs. Here, have a look at the people protesting, and keep in mind how dangerous this is in this country. You could easily be raped, tortured, and lose your life for simply expressing these views.

Here, you can get a general idea of the horrendous nature of the Islamic fascist regime, and some idea of how scary life can be.

I understand Islam is the main religion there and Islam has a certain dress code that it adheres too. The western American way is not the only right way. I don't have a problem with that. To each his own. If shopkeers didn't want to use the mannequins because that is their personal preference due to their personal belief than so be it.
But... It wouldn't be so outrageous if the dress code was a choice. It is not. It is dictated by a regime of radicals, who have had their boots on the throats of thier people for century's and twist the teachings of the Quran to please their own sick agendas. The women there have NO rights. They are property. Is a mannequin really that big of a deal? No. It is just another way for Islam extremists and the dictator (I will not call him President because that would imply that he was fairly elected by the people and I don't believe he was) to control thier people, especially women further.

"Islam has a certain dress code that it adheres too." But it doesn't. These leaders aren't getting all this from the Koran. This is coming from centuries of repressive social tradition. People may try to use the Koran to justify their dictates, but if you look at the text it frequently isn't there to back them up.
What I don't like is that I strongly suspect the majority of people in Iran do not want these repressive rules but they are afraid of going against them (with very good reason.) It's one thing if the majority of citizens in Iran believed whole heartedly in these rules. That to me would be a different set of values that I would respect and leave alone.
A side note: it's sad to me that while Iran is banning curvy models because they are considered too sexy, American designers ban them because they think the ideal woman should have the body of a 12 year old boy.
Pinkie 9-24-2009 @ 8:31AM
To each his own but honestly, how can you tell if the mannequin is curvy under the traditional garb?

Iran is a long ways from the United States. Their way of living is not our way. If the Iranian's what to change their ways then that is up to them not us. I read this artical with a smile on my face, because their police state of goverment can go as far as to tell the people how to belive, act, dress, and even what they can and can not eat. If the people there don't want change, or even if they do, they have to do it not us. Remember we did it way back in 1776, and it really hasn't stoped yet, I like it here, how about you?

Yeah, that's the answer isn't it. Let's destroy everything and every person we don't agree with. Grow up and consider being more diplomatic and less generalizing. A whole country of people doesn't deserve to get nuked just because they have SOME crazy people in it. There are crazy people everywhere. Should we just blow up the whole world and have done with it? Get real, get a life, think outside the box, etc.

If the people of the country want to let religion rule their country it is their decision - happy whre I am.........
