Sometimes I'll walk a trade show (a fashion convention where numerous designers set up booths to show their upcoming collections to retail buyers and journalists) for an hour, passing hundreds of lines without ever stopping to take a second look.
Other times, there will be so much bag-a-licious goodness to see that I have to spend more than one day taking it all in.
The latter was the case at last week's Coterie and Sole Commerce shows in New York City. I found myself stopping at several booths to make introductions and peruse purses under closer inspection. Here are my top two finds:
Michelle Monroe, a designer whom I actually met a year ago at the WSA trade show in Las Vegas. I liked her festive line then, but this time around it seemed even more energetic and necessary.
In a time when many designers are opting for safe shapes -- a simple leather hobo, a refined crocodile tote – with minimal eccentricities and consequently, minimal excitement, Michelle Monroe has not wavered from her bold use of jewelry hardware, feathers and flair.
For Spring 2010, Michelle Monroe is still giving us her feathers, along with oversized half-moon-shaped clutches, ruffle and fringe detailing and tassels (a key trend for the season). Right now, you can rock her "Christina" black feather clutch.
My next lengthy stop was at Lena Erziak, and lasted for over 40 minutes. Plus, I came back a second day for more purse-onalized attention (and the yummy chocolates the PR girls were handing out).
I'm beyond obsessed with the quirky, vintage-inspired line created by Leona and Hasna Erziak, two disgustingly gorgeous sisters. The collection, crafted in Italy, launched in 2008 and is heavily influenced by the girls' Belgian and Moroccan background.
Lena Erziak brings us casual shoulder bags and cross-body purses, lots of color in varying materials and finishes and tassel detailing for next spring. Right now, check out the "Chic Classic Bag;" a perfect name for this snakeskin hobo in soft grey.
You can check out Lena Erziak in person (and meet me too) at the BagTrends Arm Candy Party on Oct. 7 in New York City.
