You're So Goth - How To Pull Off Fall's Black Lipstick Trend
MAC Black Knight Lipstick and Nocturnelle Nail Lacquer -- can you handle it? Photo courtesy of MAC Cosmetics.
Sorry, kids!
Style-conservative Washingtonians are bleeding black: Lace, pearls, hats, and nail polish - all quite noir-ish - has been spotted on Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, White House social secretary Desirée Rogers and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Maybe they drew their inspiration from the Spanish Prime Minister's newly photographed Goth daughters. Because - historically speaking - no one does somber black apparel better than the Spaniards.
But even more surprising than politicos taking style tips from Marilyn Manson is the Goth makeup trend - especially gray and black lipstick, as seen on the Fall 2009 runways for designers such as Rachel Roy, Rodarte and Tuleh.
And both MAC and Chanel have intense, black lipsticks for fall. Chanel's Noir Obscurs collection (launching in November and which also includes shades of rich plum, forest green and midnight blue for eyes, and burgundy for nails and lips) and MAC's Style Black collection (also including dark, glittery blue, green, and purple for eyes and nails) both feature the unusual lipstick shade.
"Black plays into so many current pop culture phenomena, like vampires and a revival of Eighties street style," says MAC Senior Artist Fatima Thomas.
But does black lipstick work in the real world? Thomas says, "For the daring, use a lip brush to paint on MAC Black Knight Lipstick then lightly blot with a tissue. If you're a bit unsure [about black], try the sheer MAC Bling Black Glimmerglass over a nude lipstick like MAC Viva Glam II for a subtle look." Or get the same mysterious feeling with a more wearable dark purple or deep brown lip color.
Smoldering eye makeup is an easier Goth trend to swallow, and Thomas explains, "Smoky eyes are still relevant. Nothing's easier or sexier than MAC Smolder Eye Kohl rimmed around the entire eye -- top and bottom -- then smudged with a small brush like MAC 219. And remember to add loads of mascara. My mascara du jour is Zoom Fast Black Lash."
Not into deep dark shades? We also love the return of classic red lipstick, à la the golden days of Hollywood!

As a make-up artist I know how important lips are to any woman, whether supermodel or super-mom. I'm therefore always up for trying something new, but after being disappointed with the performance of other lip plumpers I was not expecting too much from Cushy Lips ( http://tiny.cc/CushyLips) . I owe it to my clients though to keep up to date on new cosmetics so I gave it a shot anyways. I have to say it without a doubt outperforms any other lip plumper of its type on the market. It does really visibly increase the size and softness of your lips, and it has a very pleasant texture to it. When I did the make-up for a photo-shoot last week I used Cushy Lips on the models, and afterwards all of them wanted to know what I had used on them so they could go out and buy it as well.http://tiny.cc/CushyLips

I work in a modeling agency and the only way that our models over age 22 are able to get down to their weight for bathing suit shoots is by using a fat burning/detox/cleanse. This is the one that we find works the best http://cli.gs/WeightLossCleanse I'm far from a model myself but it's been helping me lose 5-8 pounds a month and I have never felt better in my life. http://cli.gs/WeightLossCleanse

I really don't know how I feel about this. I've been a part of the goth community for over 10 years now. I'm glad it's becoming more accepted. but thisis also turning goth into some cheap, wussy imitation of what it once was. Every generation of "goth" becomes more cheap and easily influenced. First, we were direct decendadnts of punk rock culture. Then, creepy kids who loved rock and grew up on munsters and adams family and the like. Then the mall goths came about with thier stripees and marilyn manson shirts with the baggy jeans. then the emo kids, then the Twilight crew. and now this? just put on some black nail polish and suddenly you become goth. it's that easy. real goths don't even use that word to descibe themselves in the first place.

Just because a person wears black does not make them goth. Honestly, goth is a lifestyle not some fashion style.

Spot on!
How to pull it off???? DON'T WEAR IT! It can't be "pulled off!" It is ugly horrible gross.
Don't Gothies think they're vampires? Adults playing Make Believe/Dress Up? Dungeons and Dragons gone a little far?
Looks awful and is a definite LOOK AT ME attention-seeking disorder.

ok what does twilight have to do with this? The books dont have anything goth about them, and if you actually read them you would know that. You shouldent go around saying bad stuff about the books if you havent even read them.

I have read them, actually. I guess it's not the books' fault. But for some reason, there is a whole new wave of kids thinking thinking they're goth, coming out to our events wearing twilight shirts, or true blood shirts, or vampire diaries merch etc. I suppose it's not all bad. Maybe some of them will stick with it. our scene is dwindling, afterall...

Black? I don't think so. And for those who do chose black better have your teeth bleached before trying that color.

That is SO UGLY! Very few respondsible women will actually wear BLACK lipstick! Maybe to a Halloween party or while passing out candy but that trend is butt ugly! I've been doing hair and makeup for 25 years and NOBODY ever looks good in black lipstick! Even blacker skinned women prefer warmer colors. As much as I love the color black, it's repulsive as lipstick. I'm sure it will only be trendy during OCTOBER...

i have been doing all of this for so long now. i have been leaning towards the punk/goth look for a long time. and now its popular? and its not just the dumb make up. its more like a state of mind. and a way to live. and some of it has to do with music.
i hate the stupid "trends". my whole family looks down on me for doing that but they say "are the kids at school doing that? why are you doing that" but i always say "no, i like it. i dont give a s*** what anyone else thinks. i dont care about trends and fashion." and the stupid twilight books have nothing to do with anything smart one. -_-
and stop posting stupid advertisements! its so annoying!

yeah, let me run right out and at the age of 54, get black lipstick! yeah, sure, that'll work.......ladies stop following trends and learn what looks good on you, what works for your age, skin color, body type, you'll never go wrong. we need to stop trying to look like 15 year old models who are 6 feet tall and weight 98 pounds.

So... I've been wearing dark colors for years and having to search specialty shops for elegant goth clothes and now somebody decideds it's "in" and now it's everywhere? Urgh... I hate the fashion world.

I'm just a regular guy that knows what other guys like. We do not like lips made up to look so thick & shiny that the color looks like it came out of a can of Sears Enamel Paint. Same for the Tammy Faye "caked look" on the cheeks. "More natural" is "more better!" We do not like lips lined with, say a brown liner, and the rest of the lips another color. It makes the wearer look like they've been having oral sex with a Snickers bar. Yes, Megan Fox is a fox...but tone down the color a bit. Keep the colors in tune with the tone of the wearer...not in contrast. And my goodness...enough with the black eye shadow. A little is great...but not to the point that it makes you look like your pimp beat you up last night. Guys like their ladies looking good, but they want to see the natural you too. Women are beautiful people...and just a hint goes a long way!

There will always be a handful of kids in high school that for some reason or another try to look as weird and different as possible. I worked at a high school with kids for 3 years, and you can definitely see that these kids obviously do not get any attention in life, so they seek to draw attention to themselves. They've decided that trying to fit in hasn't worked so why not try "to not fit in" in order to get attention. Black lipstick is not a fashion trend, it is a plea for help!
