Holiday Shopping Will Be Down This Year, According to New Poll

Christmas in July? Not if retailers want to keep shoppers happy (and spending)! Photo: Getty Images
According to a new poll by Zogby International, 45% of holiday shoppers are planning on spending less this holiday season than last, reports WWD.
Polling adults in the U.S. aged 18 to 70, Zogby also discovered that more and more shoppers (69%) will be using cash or debit cards for the majority of their purchases instead of extending their credit, says the source.
But rather than rev up holiday advertising, retailers may want to cut back on too much promotion.
About half of the adults polled said that holiday shopping should start after Thanksgiving, and 3 in 10 would prefer it if retailers didn't overload them with holiday hype.
It's not all bad news, though. According to WWD, 80% of those polled will still be spending money on holiday purchases this year, while about 50% will spend between $300 and $1,000 on presents.
