Understated is out, at least for the moment. Instead, oversized and opulent make-a-statement styles-such as rhinestone-encrusted cocktail rings, turquoise cabochon chandeliers, and sequin-and-crystal-studded tulle bibs-are very, very in. But this turn toward the ostentatious doesn't mean that anything goes: As Boston-based stylist Kerry Epstein explains, "Less is still more. If you're going with a bold necklace, you need to lay off the earrings and the bracelets." Or, as J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons even more simply puts it, "Pick a spot. That's the rule I tell all my friends."

Lyons likes to layer her company's crystal necklaces, but she says that they must be pulled off with at least a soupcon of cool indifference: "If you're going to pile on the jewels, pair them with a utility jacket and jeans," she advises, "or a chambray shirt. I definitely agree with the "less is more" style when it comes to attending social functions or just a casual day out! I think just as "LBD" is a staple in every woman's wardrobe it is necessary to have simple jewelry pieces that make a statement. I mean, you don't want to be looking like anyone else, You have to stand out but in a good sense. I try to keep my ensemble simple and elegant with silver jewelry for night time and everheard of "carved gourd"? yeah I think they are so exquisite!
