Q: I've been a stay at home mom for the past four years so I sort of feel out of the loop with all the trends. We are getting ready for our "holiday" family picture so I was wondering if a red wool blazer is considered in or out?
A: With something as precious as a family photo, you want to look classic and timeless. A red blazer is a perfect - and festive! - way to add a splash of color to your ensemble.
After four years, you may want to make sure that the color of the blazer is still in tact and not too faded. "To minimize a less than vibrant red, make sure not to position yourself in the photo next to someone who is wearing something in an intense brand new red," says stylist Meg Goldman who worked on our Rockettes shoot. "Dress the person next to you in a forest green or a plaid."
If it is too faded, you could always add some sparkle in the form of brooches. Forever 21 has a great one that is under $6! Buy two or three of varying sizes and arrange them in a cluster on your lapel. "Wearing simple jewelry to draw the eye up to the face," says Goldman. "Or opt for a patterned scarf that works with the jacket that will break up the color and add some interest."
Of course if you are really feeling like spending, there are plenty of pitch perfect holiday red blazers and sweaters to choose from this season. This velvet number from Talbots will take you through another four years!
