Every year, we each receive gifts more likely to cause grimaces than glee. Those are the half-unwrapped disappointments that are instantly consigned to the emergency regifting closet (yes, scented candle, we're looking at you).

In 2009, it's time for all that to end: we've put together a list of Banned Gifts that should be excised from every shopping list come the holiday season and never seen under a tree again. We've also tapped two gift-giving gurus for their insights in offering better ideas. There's Lindsi Shine, who runs the VIP concierge service InsiderNYC and is relied on by the rich, famous, and impatient to shop on their behalf. And for insight into what really bores boys - and the ways to reinspire them - gadget expert and all-round style aficionado Tyler Thoreson.
