PajamaJeans - The Next Snuggie?

Say hello to PajamaJeans -- a new addition to the "I didn't feel like getting dressed" family of "fashion," advertised as "the pajamas to live in, and the jeans to sleep in." Um, okay.
"We were noticing that people were wearing their pajamas on airplanes and in grocery stores. But a lot of people have mixed feelings about it because they think it's inappropriate and sloppy," Stacey Buonanno, merchandising manager for The PajamaGram Company, maker of the double duty "denim," explained to StyleList.
"We thought, why don't we develop something that you're comfortable hanging around the house in or even sleeping in, but it looks acceptable when you go out of the house?"
"A lot of people wear their workout clothes out. But we thought it would be easy to take a pair of jeans, style them similar to a yoga pant, give them all the jean detailing, but make them stretchy and soft so that you wouldn't mind wearing them to bed," she told us.
Adding that, "The cool thing about the fabric is that the outside looks like a typical twill but it definitely has more of a jersey feel. And the inside is really, really brushed, so it almost feels like the inside of sweatpants or fleece."
"We thought it was perfect for the woman Oprah calls a 'shlumpadinka' to kick it up a notch. She can still be casual and comfortable, but she can look like she's snazzy and stylish," Buonanno said.
While we dare you to watch the PajamaJeans commercial (below) without cracking up (a breathy voice touts: "PajamaJeans have all the detailing of your favorite jeans -- high contrast top stitching, back pocket design details, even brass rivets so they look like they were made by some European designer"), it looks like the creators are laughing all the way to the bank. The jeans sold out within a few days of the launch.
"[It] took us all pleasantly by surprise," John Gilbert, PajamaGram's president and CEO, said in a statement. "We knew we had a great product that would appeal to many women, but the speed with which they flew out the door was amazing. It feels great knowing we've created a product that can give women everything they want, and demand, in a favorite pair of jeans."
Honestly, despite the gimmicky name and concept, the jeans themselves don't look so bad (although we're wondering how those rivets feel when you're taking a nap). We'd definitely say the dark wash and slim-fit puts them a couple notches above the out-dated mom jeans favored by President Obama and Steve Jobs.
However, with the proliferation of Snuggies, Snuggle Suits, Toasties, jeggings and, now, PajamaJeans (which are only $40 a pop and have "additional designs in the works" for later this year, including new washes and a potential maternity style), we're sort of scared about an impending comfort-only fashion revolt.
We just pray that Alexander McQueen and Nicolas Ghesquière will keep fighting the good fight on our behalf -- and maybe come out with some $40 items of their own to help aid the pro-fashion side of the battle.
Did you snap up a pair of PajamaJeans yet? Will you?

They look wonderful and I would love to have a pair. But they only go to Large and I need XL because I'm pregnant. That's what aggrevates me about clothing, I'm not fat but I'm not a 2 either and designers always favor the 2's

I am a size 2 and I get tired of people talking about how the world is made for size 2s and girls who aren't are just left out. I was at New York and Company over the weekend and had a hard time finding pants because all they had were 6, 8, 10, 14, etc. I wish that people would stop trying to make smaller girls feel guilty for being small. I work really hard to stay this size and shouldn't have to feel bad about that. I probably just have a case of the Mondays and shouldn't be taken seriously, but that's how I feel about the situation. I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I just though I would give the other side of this debate for once.

Liz, did you even watch the add? They go up into plus sizes- not just to Large. They might be sold out of the larger sizes, but that doesn't mean the designers 'favor' size 2's. Sheesh.

Go on the Pajama Gram website - they make them all the way up to size 1X - they do run small though.

Wow, you seem to have some issues with worrying about what other people wear. At $40 a pair, I'll wear them wherever I want!

I think these would be great to have..and to heartbreak kid being comfy doesnt mean u r trailer trash..some people just have days they want to feel comfortable esp us women since we do have to feel like crap and deal w being bloated one week a month or those of us who are single mothers who dont always have the time to look glamorus, we want to feel comfortable when chasing after our kids..also yes i agree fasion designers make to many things that require u to be a twig to wear and actually look good in

I am so getting a pair of these maybe even 2 pairs. I will be all over these. I wounder if they will come out with white or other colors. work requires me to wear white all white I am talking shirts pants and shoes and atm I wear white sweat pants I picked up at the local scheels. so if they come out with white and many other colors I would get like 20 pairs LOL for me its all about comfort :)

Oh boo hoo, I'm a 2! Seriously Betsy? No one feels sorry that you can't find pants in your size. There are tons of cheap clothing stores that you can shop in if you can't find your size in one store. No sympathy here.

Why on EARTH do they say plus sizes??? THEY only are available up to Large!!! IF I last checked if you go to the store plus sizes are 14-16 and above not 10-12, well I was thinking of getting a pair for work as a home health aid to wear w/ my scrub tops. but I guess that is their lose not mine. I guess I will just wear my jeans or scrubs.
Maybe be alittle more size friendly and update the look I dont want to look like I am wearing my moms jeans. I think these have potential though if they would give more variety of looks to the jeans and maybe give a capri look.

Hey, good idea, beats running around in lounge wear and workout clothes to do local errands outside the home. But don't forget us men, just make them with a little more "skrunch" room in the crotch area, and bigger. Also consider replacing the the rivets with a similar softer roap like material. And don't make the legs too tight. Just a thought.

I have the same problem with finding jeans long enough. I have a 38" inseam and I wear a size 2. On the rare occassion that I do find a pair of jeans that are long enough yet small enough, I have to fork out roughly $200. I love to shop but finding a good pair of jeans is just frustrating! I wish designers would realize that women come in ALL shapes and sizes.

The trailer trash comment was rather idiotic and opinionated. Not sure if I'd personally go for this product, but regardless of how hilarious the commercial is, I can see why it would work. The fact is, there's nothing wrong with a trend toward comfort-fashion. If youre judging people based on their clothes all the time, you're worse than the "trailer trash" that is criticized in Heartbreak Kid's comment. An interview is not the best place to wear these, obviously. But that doesn't mean that these wouldn't be acceptable if you're going to WalMart. [I mean who's gonna be at WalMart that is SO special you need to dress up for them?] Like I said, there ae obviously cases where one should dress well, but there's nothing wrong with comfort fashion.

Hey, I can sympathize--and if lacking a preoccupation with one's own looks is a hallmark of trailor trash, well, I'll be proud to call myself that. Too much of the "me me me how beautiful I am" culture around here. No wonder the country's in the toilet.
As for you, boo hoo I'm a 2 Julie. Your genetics are to blame for your looks, not your inner sense of superiority to the rest of us. One day you will grow older and become the very person you scorn.
That's the way it works--derogate another and one day, that will be you.

Another one of those people who gets pissy because I don't get all dressed up when I need to grab a gallon of milk. Sorry, I don't exist to bolster your ego.
