Hands up, Carrie Underwood! Big engagement bling is so last season.
At least that's the word from New York City brides, who have replaced their rocks with simple wedding bands to be avoid being judged, they tell the New York Post.
Yep -- apparently having a doorknob on your ring finger is kinda tacky. Who knew?
Instead, women -- including leading ladies like Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep -- are opting for understated wedding bands, the paper reports.
"Why go around with a massive diamond on your hand," wedding blogger Claudia Copquin tells the source. "There's no need to make any kind of statement."
(Buh, buh, buh -- we like shiny things!)
The recession could also be to blame for this bling backlash. The paper spoke to one woman who worried that her rock was "too flashy" given the economic downturn.
"Some said it looked just as blingy as the other recently engaged girl in the office who had been sporting a tacky, over-the-top zirconium as a place holder while her custom rings were being made," the woman told the Post.
"It made me a bit overaware of its presence for a while."
Then there are those gals who are afraid of being judged because their diamonds are too small.
"I'm not materialistic at all, but I know what women in New York are like," another woman told the paper of her modest engagement ring, which she replaced with a spotlight-stealing topaz ring before sticking to just her wedding band.
And let's not forget the ladies who just don't want to flash an ugly ring picked out by a well-meaning -- if a bit sartorially challenged -- man.
"Many people didn't realize it was an engagement ring because it's not a diamond," a New Jersey designer said of her emerald rock.
"I always noticed people's eyes going to my hand, and it felt like I was being judged. I just wanted to take that off the table."
So she did -- and now reportedly just wears her Tiffany wedding band.
Looks like this doesn't apply to "The Bachelor" winner Vienna Girardi!
Meanwhile, check out Hilary Duff's giant engagement ring.

The beautiful rings need not be huge. Classical models and elegant designs, are more beautiful and less ostentatious.

The smaller and more delicate the better. Who wants to worry about a big ole diamond getting caught in your hair and your pockets. If it fails the pocket test it's too big. My ring is a single band with pave set diamonds. LOVE it and would not have wanted even a solitaire ring.

If that is what you are looking for when you get married, you have no business getting married in the first place...."Get me a BIG ring, so i can pay for a divorce....." Apparently vows have been forgotten, marriage isn't taken as a "Lifetime" commitment anymore.

I have a 5 carat ring and it is anything but tacky. I love it. If you have a nice cut, clear, good quality diamond, it is always a classic.

here here. you wear what you can afford. why should people be embarrassed because their fiancee can afford more than someone elses? i would like my large ring, people shouldnt need a microscope to find your diamond or wonder if it came from a box of cracker jacks.

To Pam: The 5 crt. ring YOU claim you have may not be tacky. But YOU are... Now go back to watching your Home Shopping Network....

Several years ago, a young woman I worked with got engaged and opted for a cocktail ring. It was antiqued and peppered with diamonds and was the gaudiest, ugliest ring I had ever seen. Sadly, it looked like a bad joke. It was the perfect example of the saying "more is not necessarily better."

The only message a BIG rock sends is that the woman has a man who has money and he bought it.
Women usually don't buy their own engagement rings and most women don't buy any outstanding pieces, especially the very high priced items that are bought also as an investment!
Women just can't understand it that in all things, 'less is more' and makes a much better statement!

A good quality diamond is going to cost at least $25,000 PER carat on up to as much as $250,000.00 per carat!
Big rocks only stay that in most cases, the woman has a wealthy man to buy her jewelry. Most people know a woman doesn't buy that sort of jewelry for herself, but that she has a man who can afford to buy it for her.
New money people don't understand that "less is more" and those that flash it don't have any class.

Really......? Where are you buying your diamonds? Or is it that your information is just plain wrong? I have an almost perfect diamond and trust me it doesn't have to cost $25,000!!

Someone should tell this to Jake, the bachelor. He gave her a big , round, stone, that looked like it had a cluster of little diamonds and rubys in it.

Since when were big, " door knob " diamonds ever in ?! Not here, in MIchigan. I've rarely seen a huge diamond like that around here. Maybe b/c there was a recession in MIch way before the other states, b/c of the auto industry taking a dive.
