We all remember Demi Moore revealing her shaved head as Lt. Jordan O'Neil in "G.I. Jane." She wowed us with her seriously buff bod, but it was her bald head that really had people turning theirs. Natalie Portman also went all-out for her role in "V for Vendetta" when her head was shaved on screen -- luckily, they got it right the first time!
While many women have proven that being bald is hot, others have not (ahem, "Britney"?). Some say the pop star shaving her own head was a reaction to the stress of raising two kids and a failed marriage; others believe it was a publicity stunt. Either way, we can probably all agree it was a definite hair don't.
So what makes some women able to pull this look off?
It's all in the shape of your face, says Moulay Yacoubi of the Pierre Michel Salon in New York. "You would need to have an oval or heart shaped face," he said. "It helps to have clear skin and strong symmetrical features, too, since the face will be the focal point."
Moulay warns that going bald is not for everyone, so don't break out the razor just yet. "This look is extreme, so it requires someone with a lot of moxie and a rocker edge. It's definitely not for the faint of heart and most people would look much better and more stylish with a short haircut that flatters their face rather than a totally bald look."
He adds, "For women who are losing hair due to chemotherapy, shaving the head can be a bold, beautiful statement. For most people, though, I'd strongly advise against it. I always advise my clients to settle on a classic, flattering hairstyle rather than a momentary trend because beautiful hair never goes out of style."
Still want to try the bald look? Don't attempt to cut it yourself.
Moulay says its best to place the task in the hands of a professional who can assess whether this is the right choice for you. For most people though, he says a pixie cut is a much better option!

Yes! We need to see more bald heads in public and we're trying!
Our award winning, NY-based nonprofit for women with alopecia areata, Bald Girls Do Lunch at http://www.BaldGirlsDoLunch.org is delighted when the bald choice makes it to mainstream media.
We're raising the options quotient for women who cannot grow hair (anywhere) while also raising their self confidence in the face of an altered self-image...especially for those who lost their hair in childhood. Even wearing wigs, women with alopecias say the pressures of a hair-centric culture makes them feel abnormal, unfeminine, even freakish. That needs to change. There are hundreds of thousands of us in the US....but most are hiding in plain sight, filled with shame and secrecy under wigs.
While wigs are always an option, and we support all options, we look forward to the day when the bald look is a normal and socially acceptable option, too. We're optimistic for more media and celebrities to continue to show the faces of the bald look, so women like us will be more accepted to use ALL our choices.
July 1-31, 2010 is the first annual International Women with Alopecia Month. Please contact us. Join us. Support our nonprofit's work for the women who cannot grow hair normally and just want to be accepted for however they look.

You go bald girls! Hair is highly overrated, something I found when I lost my hair during chemotherapy. I didn't wear a wig or a turban, but sported my shiny, bald head proudly with the help of big earrings and lots of eye make-up. It was oddly liberating and I found that mostly the only people who stared and pointed were teenaged girls. I guess I made them uncomfortable. For the first time in my life small children flocked to me. I have hair now (a pixie cut), but fondly remember my hairless days.

Watch how cold your head gets when YOU are bald. I pray that it's minus 50 degrees when YOU cut it all off.

She looks great to me. I wouldnt put her down just because she`s bald.
Most ppl. cannot get past looks because we have been brainwashed
to think every guy and gal has to look like they just stepped out of a mag.
Im more interested in what`s in a persons heart and character not how beautiful or ugly they are.

No one should be ashamed if they lose their hair due to cancer or medical treatment. And I don't know why they would feel like a freak if they decided to wear a wig. But no one should buckle under to any outside pressures telling them that they need to come out and go bald! arrrghhhh! A person should make up their own mind for sure. But as far as anyone preaching that "bald is beautiful" and that normal women should go bald - on purpose?! NO WAY! Bald is NOT beautiful! On women OR men, its hideous. Keep your full head of hair and wear it proudly! After all, you may not have it forever! Aging is ruthless on some, and may give you no choice in the future. Be grateful for what you have.

Bald is beautiful! I am bald due to an auto-immune disorder called alopecia totalis. I embrace who I am, and although I do wear wigs, I go to the beach and workout in bandanas and sometimes nothing. So readers such as scripptti should shut it, and get educated on the freaky things that can happen to great, normal people!
To all my "baldy" friends....................YOU ARE GORGEOUS AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love to you all! Dina

I shaved my head in June of 2008 just for the heck of it. I felt so free. I've let it grow in since then but I do miss it. I think everyone should shave their head at least once in their life for no good reason at all.

I shaved my head for fun three days ago...
Now i'm not happy at all: my head is shining and quite smooth, it's very pleasant to touch, but i think it's not attractive to see... many people don't look at me very good...
What have i to do now???
Thanks!
Susan 3-16-2010 @ 7:26AM
Maria, I didn't shave my head thinking it would look attractive. I did it because I wanted to. You shouldn't care what other people think. You can wear hats and scarves until your hair grows out.
Maria 3-29-2010 @ 3:25PM
Thanks, you are right... i got some pretty scarves, i like them, i feel comfortable with them, my bald head begins to be pleasant... i shaved it again!!!

Female hair has been over-emphasized ever since Hollywood became part of our lives. A good-looking woman doesn't need hair of any type to be attractive, and an "ordinary"-looking lady can't improve what she has by hair alone--so why do we spend so much time and money bothering with it? So why not chop it off?!

When you look like this model, you can get by with anything. Not every woman is going to look good like this; just as some men don't look good with the Kojak look.

On March 25, I am going to shave my head (not razor shave). I will be a shavee at a St Baldricks event in NC. Right now my hair is past my butt. Everybody tells me not to do it, but they don't know how much of a pain having long, thick hair can be. I can't wait to take a 5 minute shower, compared to 20+ minutes with the shampoo & conditioner. I'm ready to ride with the windows down & not have to worry about tangled hair. I'm ready for FREEDOM!!! Please show your support by going to:
