When Supermodels Ruled The Runways (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

Remember the heyday of Cindy, Linda, Christy, Claudia and Naomi? We do. The recent appearance of some of our favorite '90s faces in the news (first, Kate Moss's wedding extravaganza, then this iconic trio gracing Spanish Vogue) has made us a bit nostalgic for the days when supers reigned supreme.

So, we've taken a look back at these runway legends back when they actually strutted the catwalk -- and were favorites of designers like Versace, Perry Ellis and Isaac Mizrahi.

The real supermodels were those great woman who ruled the runways during the late 70's and early 80's , like Jerry Hall, Iman, Pat Cleveland,Dalma, Anna Bayle,Mounia, Dianne Dewitt, Tara Shannon, etc.

Those were the good old days. When I saw the photo of Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford walking down that runway in 1992, that definitely made me smile. Boy have times changed!

I remember all the girls in addition to Cluadia, Linda, Christy, Naomi, Carla Bruni, Karen Mudler,Helena C,Nadge, Kristen,Veronica Webb,KAren Alexander, etc. These were women who brought the clothes to life on the runway. The fem-bot models on the runway these days could not hold a candle to the greats. They should have a SuperModel Catwalk throw down!

one of the sexiest and memorable ads was elizabeth taylor's white diamonds ad that must be 30 years old. but still plays at Christmas Time and sells tons of White Diamonds perfume. she wasn't a model by trade but she could have been one if she chose. why? because she had a beautiful face a great bust and body with just the right amount of meat on her bones. all the older models shown have one thing the younger ones of today don't have. For those of us who DO love fashion, those were the days. Although the models were thinner than the average woman, they were not only beautiful but more representative of what a healthy woman looked like. Personally, I prefer the models of the 50's & 60's who not only fabulous but stunning - Suzy Parker, Dorian Leigh (sis of Parker & on whom Holly Golightly- Breakfast at Tiffany's - was based) Veruschka, Maude Adams. Now THOSE models were the absolute picture of perfection, womanly and healthy.

I always wondered why Gay Men dominate this business?

And why women listen to them?

It's really bizzare.

These models have nice figures and do not look like the president day Anorexia bulimics. Why do designers think that men and especially women find this present day look in models appealing?
02:37 PM on 09/03/2011
President day? And its anorexic bulimics. If your gonna critcizie at least use spell check!

Sorry, you got me. Some times I get carried away without using spell check. It's just that today’s models look less than a size zero compared to the 60's. is this better?
04:08 PM on 09/03/2011
Re-read your post and ask yourself if you have room to pick on someone else's spelling. :)

Did anyone else notice that, with the exception of Kate Moss, these women would be considered "too fat" for the runway today? Ahh, the days when models looked like women instead of teenage boys with makeup are gone it seems. By the way, anyone who doesn't think Cindy Crawford is beautiful should have their head examined.
12:56 PM on 09/03/2011
Somehow, those "looks" never caught on except at costume parties.
12:50 PM on 09/03/2011
Jean Shrimpton, Cheryl Tiegs...those were Super Models (were any of you born yet?), but they did not do the runway stuff. Cindy Crawford was a good Super Model because she had some meat on her bones.

They call that fashion? Half of it takes these women and makes them look like cartoon characters! It's ridiculous as to what Americans truly value.

Well, I don't value this type of clothing ... although I did see one or two that can fall under the catagory as elegant and stylish. The only people that value this stuff are people like the Kardashians and their followers.
11:30 AM on 09/03/2011
I don't think this model was that gorgeous, but hey at 5'11", bone thin with decent facial bone structure and she is making millions whether she has a brain or not - all the more power to her. I guess I wanted to be one of those girls, but with a brain.

I have to say half or more of these so called super models are absolutely nothing to me... I see more talent and beauty on the streets in NY and FL... I can't speak for many other places but i am sure they will all agree... Of course the super models will not agree with me or maybe some of the guys who photo them... LMAO

And if half the talent and beauty on the streets in NY and FL had half the chance they would jump at the chance to be supermodels but they are not are they?
