THE INSPIRATION: Julie Christie-meets-Courtney Love with a little bit of East Village -- bad girl from a rich family

HAIR: Hairstylist Eugene Souleiman and colorist Aura Friedman for Wella Professionals joined creative forces to translate Som's "petal to the metal" spring collection into a hairstyle that represented a modern woman with an edge. And thanks to a few strategically-placed pastel hair pieces, models strutted down the runway in strands that were less ladylike and more lived-in.

"Everything is really about daywear, but in a high-end fashion way. Real clothes but turned up," Souleiman said. "I wanted the girls to look very cool, sexy and quite warm."

Souleiman prepped strands with Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier. Next, he created a semi-low part and blow-dried the girls hair with Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray to create movement. Then Friedman added variations of coral, rose gold, peach and amethyst hair extensions on either sides of the part before covering with a thin layer of hair. She accomplished the powdery tones by painting platinum blond wefts with Wella Professionals Color Touch and Relights, leaving a gray shadow towards the root to help disguise piece in hair.

"This spot highlighting technique adds a focal point and three-dimensional element," said Friedman. "The boldness is in the unusual tone, but the femininity is that the colors are soft and beautiful for every skin tone."

Before sending the models off to makeup, Souleiman sprayed on Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray to slightly dry roots and bring out the natural "imperfections" in hair. The stylist set the style by pulling locks tight to one side and going in with his hands to massage and break up the texture in the back.

When black women do it, it's ghetto, ten years later a white woman does it, it's edgy. "Bad girl from a rich family", is that code for "I am not racist, my best friend is black?"

Black women wore that hairstyle in the late 80's early 90's and were called fools and ghetto for doing it. They were constantly asked the question of "Who is going to hire you with hair like that? I guess the answer to that question is a fashion designer will hire you if you have that hairstyle, as long as you are considered a bad girl from a rich family.
