Salma Hayek Launches New Beauty Line With CVS

Salma Hayek's new skincare, haircare and makeup line, Nuance -- which debuts at CVS stores this month -- is extensive to say the least. And with over 100 different products, a little overwhelming. That was until we met with Hayek recently to walk through the line and discovered why she was so passionate about creating it in the first place.

Hayek (who has been the face of Avon and Revlon in the past) was very much involved in the creation of her products. The line, she says, has actually been in the works for twenty years: It was a dream of her Mexican grandmother, who was always making creams and tinctures with local healing herbs. "She started studying all these indigenous plants, and would get all her information from the witch doctors in Oaxaca," says Hayek. The actress has applied this same philosophy to her line, sourcing ingredients native to her homeland -- specifically tepezcohuite (a plant that has been used on burn victims for centuries), which is seen throughout the line. "It's like this miracle," says Hayek. "It regenerates cells really fast." And in response to why she decided to partner with drugstore chain CVS: "I didn't want to do a high-end line because my most precious ingredients are not expensive," she says. "It's not gold. Or caviar. But I'm sure it's not better than tepezcohuite. It doesn't have to be expensive to be good."

The line -- which Hayek admits wasn't always going to be this big -- includes everything from eyeshadow quads to moisturizing body scrubs to anti-aging eye creams. When Hayek was asked to choose a stand-out product from the line, the actress just couldn't wrap her head around the idea. "I didn't understand the concept of a hero product," says Hayek. "To me every single product had to be a hero, if not why make it?"

While Hayek revealed that she had previously bought $700 creams, she was always frustrated when they didn't actually work. This line, Hayek explained, is for every woman. "I don't think good quality products should be a luxury, it should be a right!" she says. "It's the way we reinvent and decorate and celebrate ourselves, it's a ritual we've been doing forever."

Went out and bought everything my local CVS had after seeing Salma on Rachel Ray this morning. They didn't have much. Too much packaging! Something needs to be done about that. Now - I have VERY fine hair that I can't do anything with but her volumizing shampoo and conditioner my hair is amazing. I (and my hair) look and feel like I've just come home from a salon and the smell is heavenly. The facial moisturizer seems equally great. The shampoo and conditioner my store had were travel sizes and were so rigid I had to take the tops off then pound them (like catsup) to get any in my hand (maybe that won't be a problem with full sized containers). I never looked like Salma and never will but the products I purchased were the best I've tried to date. It has been hours and my hair is still full, soft, bouncy and the clean smell is positively lovely. The reviews I've read about the eyeshadow aren't promising but with great hair and skin, who cares?!

Who would buy this? Sorry Salma, you are NO Cindy Crawford...I will pass! Perhaps she should take some acting lessons and focus on what she has been doing the past 40 years.

Salma was just on the Rachel Ray show today 9/21/2011 and did 3 makeovers herself to audience members and WOW - she had GREAT tips that the average women probably wouldn't know...I was so impressed and knowing she took 10 years to develop this line - because she wanted her daughter to grow up using the BEST products available. It was a great show - I will definitely go and get the lip cremes, the concealer for under eye dark circles and the blush kit and brush...this was REALLY AMAZING - try to catch this on Rachel Ray Talk Show - well worth the viewing.

Salma - thank you for caring about the ingredients and for bringing the product line to a retailer that the average woman will have access to and can afford. So many times this kind of product line from a big celeb goes to the Nieman Marcus's and Nordtroms etc...which is great if you are rich - but for most of us - it puts it economically out of our reach. I don't normally shop CVS - but will making a stop there to take a look at the line and will try it out. Thanks for thanking about all women.
