Rachel Roy: Step Into My Office (PHOTOS)

Fashion designers have many points of inspiration. Some choose art, others music, but for Rachel Roy, who is known for designing covetable feminine and sexy clothes for everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Kim Kardashian, it's film. "I’m a big movie buff," she says. "I always want to know what's new artistically or what's vintagey, and my girls make me know the popular movies." An obsession with film just happens to run in the family, her brother Rajendra Roy is the Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film at The Museum of Modern Art. “I always ask him what I should be seeing," she says.

One such example? Her most recent collection was inspired by the 1992 film “The Lover.” Comprised of relaxed silhouettes such as sleeveless blazers, cropped pants and easy dresses, the line demonstrates Roy's ability to work the masculine-feminine equation to a tee. The movie, that Roy references, "is about a young girl in Vietnam and her lover, the gentleman,” she says. “It’s summer and she’s got all these sweet innocent dresses on, and he’s wearing these loose-fitting suits that are sleek and refined. I liked the idea of her wearing his clothes.”

On top of tackling the creative duties of her line, Roy is using film in her professional life in more ways than one. She is now the subject of an upcoming documentary about the process of her Spring show. “As a young girl, I saw designs going down the runway that made no sense to me and yet I still loved it," she says. "A lot of my customers, consumers, girls will see a design and think 'Why is she doing that?' I really think fashion shows should tell a story, tell a new point of view, and should be a nice balance of pushing fashion forward and just being wearable. I want this documentary to be a vehicle for people to understand.”

"That is the Atlantic Ocean and I have a fear of water. I purposely chose something that would inspire yet push me and Isack Kousnsky did really relaxing, very beautiful images of the shoreline. The ocean is one of my favorite things in the world, the sound of it."
