8 Weird Ways To Get Rid Of Moths (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

Now's the time of year where we normally take fall clothes out of storage...only to find that our sweaters now sport a constellation of small holes. Moths love nothing more than to chomp on cashmere, winnowing a collection of cardigans down to a small handful.

Moths seem to be a hit-or-miss issue with most people. Some toss their woolens aside for a season without any special consideration for storage and never have an issue. Others painstakingly dry clean and pack away their cold weather clothing and find the tell-tale holes. Can you guess what camp we're in?

Which leads to the question: Are we using moth balls? No. They might keep moths away, but the smell also has a repellent effect on the world around us. But we have tried the go-to natural repellent (cedar) products and came up...well, still hole-y.

So last year, we put the following other methods to the test. Our method was this: Before we sealed a sweater in a garment bag, we added the following internet-recommended natural repellents. We chose the natural repellents that a) came up repeatedly on message boards and b) smelled the nicest. All repellents were placed inside a breathable muslin bag.

And this year, we opened the garment bags...and found out what worked and what did not. Check out this slideshow to see how we fared.

Before You Begin: Vacuum

At the first sight of moths, it's time to take out the vacuum. (Why? Because it means that there are...moth eggs...in your home already.) Moth larvae can hide in carpets, under furniture and in the corners of cabinets. So, vacuum everything thoroughly, using crevice attachments for the cabinet. And, while you're at it, discard any open grain-based products found in the cabinet. Moth larvae can eat their way into the containers (or worse, arrive from the store inside the product).

You left out these two:

Wormwood (Artemisia Absinthum), endemic to Eurasisa, a classic moth repellent. Has lots of other uses too, mostly detrimental to human health. Vincent Van Gogh drank the stuff (Absinth) for years, painted some really cool pictures, and cut his ear off.

Painted Daisies (Tanacetum Coccineum), known as the Persian insect repellent, dried and pulverized, this is supposed to be the best natural moth repellent of all. Have not tried. Cedar works for me.

I once put a lavender sachet into a drawer full of sweaters. A few months later, my drawer was full of lavender-colors moth droppings, and my sweaters were full of holes. Maybe different varieties of moths like different things?

the best way i found guarantee to kill moths is catch the moth and open it's mouth and put a little moth poison in it's mouth. I guarantee it will work. : )>

Don't you just hate it when those little rascals chew on your favorite cashmere sweater? Once was more than enough for me. I build a cedar closet.

They do seem to know which one you like the best.

Why are you showing the moths? They don't eat anything. The caterpillar or larve is the eating machines. Furthermore, none of the moths you show is the Tineola Bisselliella Tineidae or common clothes moth. After you see the moth it is toooo late. Lavendar is one of the best repellants there is. If you put lavendar potpourri "or better the blossoms) into a bag with your items and seal it, the lavander will kill most, if not all of the caterpillars in the items. It will last until you remove the items. Make sure it is natural and not an artificially scented potpourri, the artificial will not work. If you have cats or dogs keep their fur cleaned up too because that is a big draw for them. They also eat it, as well as other things in the house.

Supposedly cedar masks the smell of the wool.

You didn't say how long the lavender lasts, looks kind of short term compaired to moth balls.
