Spring 2012's Crop Top Trend (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

We've done plenty of navel-gazing throughout the spring 2012 shows. Designers such as Alexander Wang, Prada, Proenza Schouler and Missoni showed a multitude of midriff-baring looks.

And we've come to embrace the trend, which has become a runway staple in recent seasons. Now rendered in boxier cuts and flowy fabrics, crop tops can have a louche, easy charm when paired with trousers or a high-waisted skirt.

Of course, they've been associated with a diverse array of trendsetters over the years. As the New York Times noted in July, "There is one thing that Britney Spears, circa-1980s Madonna, Gwen Stefani, 'I Dream of Jeannie,' the Spice Girls, 'Clueless' and Matt Dillon in 'Over the Edge' have in common: a devotion to the crop top."

We've culled through the spring collections to present the cream of the cropped.

Don't you just love it when these anorexic women fall down and go boom?
03:03 PM on 10/05/2011
Hi, hello, greetings fashion world. One hopelessly straight man talking here. I LOVE women, I really do, and I would not have sex with ANY of these unhealthy ladies even if they all threw themselves at me at the same time and they were the last women on earth. It really seems like you need some straight male consultation to help in your decision making. REALLY! There is NO way these girls were picked by someone who likes women. Anorexic is NOT sexy! I guarantee you all your business would do immeasurably better it you factored in a heterosexual male point of view. Think about it!

Most fashion designer these days are gay men. There is something wrong when there are nothing but men who are not attracted to women designing clothes for women. The industry needs women designers as well as straight men designers. The women designers will know what a woman wants to wear and women and straight men would design clothes that appeal to both genders.

Don't always know what TO do, but always what NOT

You are fanned and faved. Women would LOVE to know what men truly want to see them wearing. A gay male designer cannot possibly know what looks good, feels good, or is appealing on a woman's body. I guess that is why they all design for girls who are built like boys!

Why do designers think skin and bone is beautiful? Also, I think it could hurt sales because the average women is not nearly this skinny and much better looking to boot...............
02:44 PM on 10/05/2011
WOW. Gotta hand it to these clothes designers, they've outdone themselves in creating some of the UGLIEST CLOTHES I've seen in years. Maybe in decades, Not to mention the models who look like famine victims. Haven't seen so many chicken legs since my gram's hen house...and those 'chicks' had bigger breasts.

Why is it that the "far-and-away" majority of these girls look as if they caught on fire, and someone put 'em out with a TRACK SHOE?
02:00 PM on 10/05/2011
What a bunch of ugly, ugly crap. Won't need new clothes next summer!
03:44 PM on 10/05/2011
WOULDN'T FIT YOU EITHER...AND WHERE WOUD YOU GO ANYWAY.
01:34 PM on 10/05/2011
This is disgusting. These girls are not sexy nor are they even good looking. They certainly are not what a real woman looks like. Why don't these clothing designers design something a real woman would wear. Get rid of these ugly skinny bulimic creatures they call models and put some real women on the runway.
01:31 PM on 10/05/2011
nothing new here showing for next year, this "look" has been done BE-fore. there's no imagination. i keep hoping a young upstart will rise to the top and shake up the fashion industry ala the 60's.. with the Mods and Rockers, Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and Carnaby st...now that I mentioned it maybe the Boomers did everything possible so all thats left ..is boring redundancy .(YAWN)
01:16 PM on 10/05/2011

And you would see a bum about the size of a grapefruit.

just thinking about grapefruit makes my lips pucker up.
12:31 PM on 10/05/2011
The bare belly part I can live with but the pasty white, deer in the headlights eyes and the Spock Vulcan ears I could probably do without.

It looks more anorexic women are making a comback. give me the ones that don't show the boney arms, legs and boobs!!!
