How To Pull Off A Bright Red Lip (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

Red lips have been a red carpet staple for decades -- the look is the epitome of sleek and polished. Yet these days women are wearing the statement color everywhere, from the office to the running around on the weekend.

What's so fantastic about a bright red lip is that you don't need to wear a lot of other makeup: The contrast of a bare face and a bold lip is what makes it feel so fresh and appealing. Plus, it instantly pulls your look together, whether you're in black dress and heels or jeans and Converse.

Watch our video for a few easy steps to getting the look right, then check out the gallery of our favorite red-lipped beauty icons.

To me, only brunettes and black hair women can pull off wearing red lipstick. I never thought it look good on a redhead or blonde. Not in my opinion.

Despite what this video says...the secret to pulling off perfect red lips is to know your skin coloring and find a red that suits it. I have found in "my" case, a red with a little brownish tint works best for me...and I don't need the darn lipliner (since it makes your lips look cartoonish).

A person has to be so careful with bright red lipstick, which can make your teeth look yellow if your complexion is not in balance. I think of a vampire on Halloween when I see bright red lipstick. Unless you have professional training, most women do not have the experience or time to contour bright red lipstick, which reminds me of the 50's. I would rather see softer, more subdued shades of red if that color must be red Burgandy or wine is more flattering.. Please, no red stains on the teeth or the linens.

Black women look beautiful in red lipstick...lots of white women don't.

Well, I think that white women with dark hair or brunette hair can wear red lipstick the best. I just don't agree with it on a blonde or redhead.

I totally agree with you. This was my point. Why all the famous white women with red lips and, not famous black women.?
09:47 PM on 10/09/2011
Did you watch the video? They chose a black woman as a model for the red lipstick.

Did I say Video, I said pictures. These were pictures of famous women. My point is, they could have use a famous person, like Haley Berry, Oprah, Jennifer Lewis, etc, to be taken serious, about their bright red lips. People like you will never get it....

Now that I look at bright red lips on many different women....it isn't a flattering look at all. The color jumps off the face because it is totally unnatural. Nobody's eyes, complexion, hair etc. goes with bright red. Also, bright red is the color of blood from a fresh wound, so it looks alarming in a way. There are so many prettier colors to choose from, pinks, corals, nudes.

My man either likes me all natural (No make-up and hair pulled back) or looking like a tramp (Make-up wise. Hair teased and red lips, Dark eyes and jeans, t-shirt and boots). I prefer the tramp look.

The video on tips to red lips didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Unfortunately, red lips aren't for everyone. For instance, the lips have to be perfectly shaped and full. Red lips are definitely NOT for thin lips.

red is my favourate red lip colour, but my lips are too small and does not look good on me..

I use marinara red. That might work on you.

There are very, very few women who can pull off bright red lips. And the look of a bare face/bright red lips is just not attractive. The only thing you see is the lips. Not a look I've ever worn, or ever will wear. I like the look of heavily made up eyes and natural looking lips.

Bright, bold red lipstick always makes the wearer look like a tramp. A couple of shades lighter and a woman looks like a lady.

Bright red lips look ridiculous. Human beings do not have bright red lips. So, when a woman paints her lips bright red, she looks like.....a woman who has painted her lips bright red. Or else a woman auditioning for Barnum and Bailey's circus as a clown.

Bright red lips are NOT attractive!

Unfortunately, I can't pull off red lips. I always look like I've been caught playing with mommy's makeup.

I am 50 years old. I love the red lips, but I am afraid that when I put red lipstick on that it makes my lips look too thin. I just don't think I can pull that look off any more.

Lining your lips prior to putting on lipstick helps. The liner add more fullness then if lips are thin.
