Sarah Jessica Parker Introduces, "100 Shoes": In Print

HuffPost Social Reading

Sarah Jessica Parker presents The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute's latest book by exclaiming, "When I was asked to write the introduction to 100 Shoes, my reaction was 'Only 100?'" Her astonishment is reasonable: the fabulous footwear in the new tome ranges from an pair of 16th century, silk Italian platforms to Christian Louboutin's strappy, studded platforms designed for Rodarte in 2008.

Parker's fictional alter ego Carrie Bradshaw would be pleased: her favorite designer, Manolo Blahnik, has several pairs of remarkable numbers included. Although the approval of the "Sex and the City" star has attributed to his popularity as a designer, Blahnik says of the heel-less "Bhutan" shoes featured in the book, "This is the kind of work I love to do because it is free from commercial constraints. With shoes like these, I don't ever think of selling. They just satisfy the creative craving that I get."

This artistic impulse is why many of these experimental, wild and imaginative shoes are part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, which includes over 2,500 pairs in total. This is nothing compared to the 35,000 costumes and accessories the Costume Institute has in total. "100 Dresses," the precursor to "100 Shoes" came out in November 2010, we're liking this trend! What should we expect next? Our fingers are crossed for the imminent release of, "100 Bags"

For a short, stylish history lesson and a preview of "100 Shoes," (including Yves Saint Laurent feathered stilettos, ankle boots from the 1800's and more!) take a peek in our gallery below:

my best friend's mom makes $77 an hour on the computer. She has been out of job for 9 months but last month her check was $7487 just working on the computer for a few hours. Read about it here MakeCash10.website.cöm

That last YSL shoe was just so gorgeous! I could picture a beautiful black gown with those shoes as the detail. Wow!

I commented on the first slide, the red sandal, before I saw the rest of this hideous collection. I swear, the dress and shoe designers are in league to make women look as ugly as possible. Why?

It's ugly and reminds me of the stupid sandals we saw in the 70's that looked like that except they had soles made out of old auto and truck tires. They did last almost forever though. Will these?

those look like something great grandpa cobbled together during the depression!....the uppers from an old horse harness and the soles from a manure spreader tire...

I don't see those shoes every day? A better question is: why on earth would I want to??

Well, you will never find any of those pairs of shoes in my closet! All of them are the ugliest pairs of shoes I've ever seen! You would think people with money would have better taste. Apparently not!

This isn't a story of interest. I don't want to see weird and whacky shoes, no more shoes that come to a pin point toe, no more how high can we make those heels until people fall over and break and ankle...no more feather - cotton balled - paperclip decorated crazy creations that don't work for anyone...

You got a story...shoe me some shoes with decent heel heights, round toe boxes - that are elegant, young, pretty, something I could actually buy and wear - now there's your story!

one word -- ugly.
