Woman Moves Face Less To Avoid Wrinkles, And It Works!

At some point during your childhood, your mom or your grandmother or another fed-up adult probably said to you, “Quit making that expression or your face will freeze like that!”

Like any self-respecting kid, you probably felt compelled to test out the theory for yourself: You scrunched up your face even more, held it for a minute or two, then triumphantly reported that your face did not, in fact, freeze like that.

And back then, it didn’t. You had that gorgeously elastic little-kid skin that snaps right back into place no matter what kind of weird contortions you put it through.

Fast-forward thirty years, though, and it’s a different story altogether.

For me, it started with my left eyebrow. I do this thing where -- if I’m confused or irritated -- I raise my left eyebrow. Used to be, the skin around my eyebrow went right back to where it should be. But now that I’m creeping (or maybe being dragged is a more accurate way to put it) toward my mid-30s, it doesn’t do that anymore. There’s this little ghost of a line, right where there used to be smooth skin.

The reason is pretty straightforward: “Constantly making an expression causes collagen to break down in that area,” explains Eric Schweiger, M.D., founder of Schweiger Dermatology in New York City. “Eventually, it can form a permanent line. It’s similar to folding a piece of paper -- the more times you fold it, the deeper the crease becomes.”

The question, of course, is what to do about it. And the obvious answer is Botox, which paralyzes muscles. Take away your face’s ability to make a certain expression, and no more lines in that area. You can’t fold the paper anymore, so to speak.

Here’s the thing, though. I’m just not in love with the idea of Botox. I have nothing at all against those who get it, it’s just that -- at this point in my life -- it’s not for me. And that got me thinking about what else I could possibly do. I’m already pretty diligent about skincare (I do Retin-A every night and sunscreen every morning), I eat healthy (lots of fruits and veggies), I work out regularly. Short of just not moving my face anymore…

And that’s when the proverbial light bulb turned on.

What if I consciously tried not to raise my left eyebrow anymore? And while I was at it, what if I tried to cut down on squinting and frowning, too? Kind of like… self-inflicted Botox. S.I.B., let’s call it. I’ve done crazier things in the name of beauty, and hell, it’s not like I was going to stop laughing or smiling. It’s just the negative, stress-filled wrinkle-causing expressions I’d try to cut out and/or minimize.

(Sidenote: Research shows that frowns can amplify negative emotions, so simply cutting down on angry expressions can boost your mood. Win, win!)

So I gave it a shot. And you know what? It kind of works.

“Sometimes you can help prevent wrinkles by consciously not making a certain expression,” says Schweiger. “Although it can be difficult to break old habits. That’s where Botox can be helpful.”

Dr. Schweiger’s right, it can be difficult to break old habits. But I’ve found it’s not impossible. So have other women are attempting to go the S.I.B route, including one former Botox devotee.

“I used to furrow my brow all day long, from the moment I woke up until the second I fell asleep,” says Tammy Schaefer, 31. “When I was about 28 I started noticing lines forming in between my brows. I tried Botox as a way to prevent them from getting worse, but I thought it made my eyebrows lift in a weird way, and it wears off after only three months. Who has the time and money for that upkeep? Now I do whatever I can to not furrow my brow. I took up yoga to help relieve my stress, and now if I catch myself furrowing at my computer screen I stop and do deep breathing exercises to relax my face. I swear all of this is helping keep the creases from getting deeper.”

“Botox has definitely never been an option for me,” adds Kara DePaola, 29. “So I started thinking of other ways to prevent wrinkles. Now I make sure I don't waste an expression. If I'm going to laugh, scowl or squint, that expression better be worth it!”

Of course, some people can’t control their expressions, positive or negative, no matter how hard they try. If you’re one of them, don’t worry -- there are other super-simple S.I.B. strategies you can do to help prevent lines.

Number one, wear sunscreen every day. It helps prevent collagen breakdown, which helps keeps your skin more elastic, so it’s less susceptible to expression lines. “Wearing sunscreen is like brushing your teeth,” says Arielle Kauvar, M.D., founding director of New York Laser and Skincare. “It’s a basic necessity in any anti-aging regimen,”

Number two, treat your eyes right to prevent crow's feet. Wear sunglasses to prevent squinting in bright sunlight, and if you find yourself squinting when you’re reading a book or staring at your iPhone, get your eyes checked.

Surprisingly, this also helps prevent frown lines. “Many people start frowning when they read as they first become far-sighted and need reading glasses -- it's a natural reflex,” says Kauvar. “If you catch these lines early, they won’t become etched in.”

And number three? Give yourself reasons to smile rather than scowl.

“When I was younger, my older sister told me that when I scowl or squint I'd get a crease between my eyebrows,” says Kim Cook, 35. “She said it would turn into a full-blown wrinkle later on. Thirty years later, I still think about that!”

So relax. Laugh. Have fun. After all, nobody’s ever looked less pretty because of a few smile lines, and nobody ever will.

This may be the most stupid article Ive ever read. Most facial expressions are INVOLUNTARY. You cannot "think" your way out of them any more than you could "think" your bladder not to fill when there's no bathroom around. If you have to mentally remind yourself everythime you have a reflex to move some portion of your face I dont think you could accomplish anything else. You would be sitting there thinking "dont smile, dont wink, dont squint" and doing nothing else. Ever. Thats sad.

i am going to turn 50 in march. people truly think im still 30. i dont do anything special--i really dont. i take hot showers and use soap on my face and body. i exfoliate with a buff puff every night with soap. i use moisturizer--different kinds-i like to experiment. its mostly genetic from my dad i think he always looked young till the day he passed away. i dont diet. just lucky i guess!

didn't have wrinkles when i was 28 to 31. can't imagine
any woman having them so terrible she would fret and

Without having to constantly remind yourself to not frown or scrunch your brow, try Frownies. I use them every night and they work great!!! They are like little brown paper stickers that you put on your problem areas (like in between your eyes or around your mouth) and leave them on overnight...then in the morning the skin underneath is smooth and the lines are reduced because you kept your skin in place. It sounds weird but it really does work. I furrowed my brow when I slept and woke up with huge creases in my forehead and sometimes a headache from it too... now that I use Frownies..no more deep red lines and no more headaches either.

This is the most ridiculous article I have ever wasted time on attempting to read. One can have a few lines and wrinkles from smiling and having an expressive, lively face, or one can have "masked facies" which is a sign of mental illness but of course there are very few lines. Of course if one is really desperate one can attempt to develop scleroderma because that too will pull the skin tight on one's face and make one look like they have had a facelift. Of course it is also a life threatening disease. Get real and get a life. There is more to the purpose in life than making sure one avoids wrinkles.

I have earned and am thankful for every wrinkle, grey hair, and stretch mark on my body. Too many people never live long enough to experience these things that tell the world we have lived and loved. It can't get much better than that!

I've seen time and again jaws dropping when I tell people my age. And I've heard time and again from people that, "You've must have made a deal with the Devil to look so young." Hey...perhaps I did:-) Anyway, I find these have been helpful for my wrinkle and sag free complexion:
1. I stopped baking in the sun in my mid 20s, and wear shades, even on cloudy days.
2. I never wash my face with soap
3. I take 4700 mgs of Vitamin C per day. C's support collagen, so if you start early enough, you'll bypass the bags and sags indefinitely
4. I take 400 mgs of fish oil per day
5. Water Water Everywhere. 8-9 cups a day does me fine.
6. Okay Okay, genetics Does play a part, but I like to think a very small part.
If I keep this up, I might start feeling a bit freakish the older I get. That's another story...

Forgot to say, the trick is to only use makeup, once in a while, not every day. I let my skin breathe, and when I feel like using something, it is good. Try my products that i use sometimes first, before you decide to get botox. I swear by Revlon, and milani, and Sephora, and Lorea'l!! Olay, ageless is ok, but drying, and Laura Mercier, just a tad for under the eyes. Hope this helps girls. GIGI

I don't have any bad wrinkles yet, but there are signs, but I am blessed, have good genes from both parents, so even if I am middle aged,I look very very, young.I always tried to do the right thing, for eating, no smoking, that is the killer,drinking,ages you also. If you get more water in you, and sleep, it helps a lot, but as we all know, we cannot be 25 forever, so embrace, and protect what you have I do. I am 65 now, people think I am 35 or younger! It is wonderful, but I am not stupid, I know I am not going to be this way forever, so as I say, just don't panic, and use what you can if you have to, or just do like me and let it come gradually. There are other things you can do,but I don't like the way botox, looks on people. I only used Ivory Soap, all my life, and Caress. Do use Cure'l Daily Moisture Fragrance Free,in the pump, Softens any lines. Revlon Colorstay,Mineral Mousse, liquid makeup, in the tube, Fair/Light. Also try Milani, Glow Natural, brush on,liquid makeup, in Fair to Light. Laura Mercier Concealer, under eyes, and you are 30 years younger.Milani face powder, Nude Buff. Milani eye shadow, lipstick and gloss, Sephora blush and eye shadow. Lorea'l True Match, face powder compact, in Warm Chaud. Sunscreen is in these products, too. GIGI

Ladies, men prefer a woman who looks natural without the done look. My wife has facial wrinkles and she looks beautiful. The wrinkles reveal the years we have spent together raising a family and the memories we have shared. Please ignore these silly qiuck fixes enjoy your lifes together.
