If you're looking for a way to remain a cut above the rest, you may want to consider cropping your locks into an angular bob.

Actresses Keira Knightley, Jennifer Aniston and Ali Larter have all made the cut this year. Additionally, backstage at Betsey Johnson's Fall 2011 show, models danced around in jet black, chin-grazing 'dos. However, when I think of this timeless look, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and her signature strands always comes to mind.

"Keira made it hip again, but the bob never went out of style," according to celebrity stylist Moulay Yacoubi. "It has always been a haircut that can transform you and make you look casual and classic."

He adds, "If you go back thousands of years ago, there were bobs. This haircut has changed, of course. You can play with the bangs or you can frame the face to open up the cheekbones. There are no rules in cutting the angular bob, you just have to respect the geometry."

Yacoubi sees this trend beyond straight on, and breaks down three different ways you can style your locks:

• If you are preparing for a night out and want to go for a retro, "Mad Men" look, set hair in rollers for 20 minutes. Release and then brush hair smoothly. Spritz with hairspray for hold while maintaining softness.

• Want to recreate Anna Wintour's pin-straight strands? Prep strands with a silicone-based product like Bumble and Bumble DeFRIZZ or John Freida Frizz-Ease. Be careful not to apply too much product to avoid buildup or greasiness. Then flat iron the hair section by section.

• To play up your natural waves for a more tousled finish, start by blow-drying with a round brush and curl in random sections -- nothing too perfect.

"The bob is right for every shape, but if you have strong features like a very pronounced jaw line, I would stay away from this cut," said Yacoubi. "When it comes to choosing any hairstyle it has to fit you -- your angles, bone structure and personality."

Before submitting to your hairstylist's scissors, the pro recommends asking:

1. Do you think this haircut would look nice on me?
2. Will it fit my features?
3. Am I the right person for this cut?

Meanwhile, we're loving this actress' vintage-looking bob.

For the many comment posters who apparently cannot read, the article says the bob has been around a long time, for thousands of years even; it's a classic style that never really goes "out". A trend is not something new anyhow; it is a pattern emerging, where something becomes very popular all of a sudden. Sometimes that means it simply becomes popular AGAIN. The only thing to criticize here is that the bob came back in full force a few years ago....like in 2008 or something. It's hardly a recent resurgence in popularity, but it's simply sticking around for a bit before it becomes less popular again.

I like the angled bob but it is hardly a "new" style. I wore it in high school back in the late 60s. It's a good style on most, and can be worn by just about any age. I like it done sleek and straight--no waves, curls or "tousled" look.

Timeless, classic style. It can be both ladylike and edgy. It highlights your cheekbones and eyes and shows off your hair, so you need a rich, glossy color to make the most of it. So much more flattering than scraggly, shapeless long hair -- especially on anyone over 21.

Had this innovative and new (LOL) hair cut in 1986... hated it! No versatility. Finally had the wing tips cut off.

All I can think of is Barbra Streisand and how her hair is always a 'bob." It is just not flattering on anyone, except maybe the Dutchboy Paint boy. Well, no, not even the paint boy. Sorry, but it is like the last resort cut, when nothing else works or there is no effort to even style the hair. In the salon I go to, all the stylists try to talk anyone out of a bob, because it is just a generic cut and not flattering at all. (It is also the standard hairstyle for mannequins, btw)

Didn't Victoria Beckham "introduce" this style about 4 years ago?

Oh, for Pete's sake this bob business is nothing new, they did that back in the twenties. I think everybody has run out of anything original to do.

@carolina, I thought I remembered photos of roaring twenties flappers wearing this style, so I did an image search and sure enough, I found vintage photos of this angled bob, exaggerated waves, "spit" curls, etc.

It's always funny to hear about new "trends" of styles that have been around for decades.

I have had my hair every length in the book, but have worn it long for many years now. Recently, I wanted a drastic change...something to make me look younger, slim down my round face...just pick me up in general. This past weekend I went in for bob. I decided not to look until the entire process was completed (which is not typical for me...I always look). When my stylist turned the chair around and said, 'open your eyes', it was literally one of those "Oh my God!" moments. I looked completely different and I loved it. It slimmed my face as I wanted, flattered my features, and took years off my appearance. I was completely thrilled. I have not been that happy when leaving the salon in YEARS! It was definitely a drastic change that I am glad I made.

How nice for you. It's an easy hairstyle to care for so you shouldn't have any problems with it.
