New Uses For Gift Wrap (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

With the holidays just around the corner, there's bound to be an excess of, well, everything. One such item is gift wrap. We've all been there when we're reusing gift wrap from the previous year on top of new rolls. Here's a clever solution: When it comes to leftover gift wrap, don't keep it stashed away in a drawer. Instead, use it to make instant placemats that are unique and visually captivating.

Entertaining expert Elaine Griffin suggests laminating or applying clear contact paper, making them perfect for big group gatherings or get-togethers that involve small children. If you're truly in a pinch for time, you can also just cut the gift wrap to whatever placemat size you want and use it as is. You can dress up the table by mixing two patterns of placemats and alternating them for every other seat or, for a more graphic approach, have a different gift wrap placemat for each spot for a fun and cheery look. if you're looking to jazz up your table with more than just individual placemats, the same technique can be used to create runners. You can either use a long one for the table or create two or three shorter ones that are evenly spaced apart.

For a more utilitarian approach, cut them to the size of specific drawers and use them as lining. Or if you're up for a bigger project, use gift wrap to line the backing inside a bookshelf. Simply cut a piece of gift wrap and contact paper to size, apply the contact paper to the back of the gift wrap and smooth it over the back surface of the bookshelf.

And finally, gift wrap doesn't have to be relegated to just surfaces. An artful alternative for making the most out of leftover gift wrap is to frame them. It can be cut to size and placed in a frame just like wallpaper. Group a few of these frames together and hang them on a wall to create an instant focal point in a room that's unexpected yet easy on the eyes.

it sits the the closet for a reason, not to be used for placemats. although it's a good idea for a party, not anything else as you described

She is a believer... just not the same beliefs as you have. My God is big enough to accept them all... the Goddesses too.

Me, too. Anytime it's my turn to feed "The Clan", I cut gift wrap the size of the t.v. trays and use it as placemats. My regular table only seats four so the t.v. trays are used a lot. If I have time, I cover paper cups to match and use as utensil holders. Drop in a few of those pretty little glass rocks to weight it down and it won't fall over. Easy, easy cleanup because even the grown ups make messes !!! I also completely cover the buffet table with matching gift wrap....I'm lazy and don't want to be stuck with scrubbing the furniture while everyone else is sleeping.

I'm a preschool teacher and I have my own laminator but if you don't own your own it would be very expensive. It is even expensive when you own your own.

buy flowered or decorated paper towels. Use as a place mat and clean up the spills the little brats make. Pretty and bio-degradable.

children are not little brats. it is up to you as a parent to raise them to be productive beings in society. so if you have little brats, you might think on being a better parent. they can't raise themselves.

that was not cute, it was horrible... parents make brats, because they don't invest their time and energy in the children. people don't have children if you aren't willing to put them first, and invest time and energy in them, and ANSWER ALL THEIR QUESTIONS.

You are being a bean brain. Adults cut loose now and then when the children aren't around. Stop being so literal.

Hmm. Contact paper doesn't strike me as particularly eco-conscious, whereas using a reusable and washable place mat does.
One thing we use leftover paper for in our house is re-packing holiday items. The fragile/breakable items get wrapped in a fresh layer of leftover gift paper when it's time to pack up in January. That gets rid of the leftover rolls, while the old stuff from the boxes goes into the fireplace to help get a fire going.
10:56 AM on 11/05/2011
What? You burn gift wrap paper? Don't you know how toxic the dyes on that paper are when burned. Not only that, it's terrible for your flue to burn paper. Why don't you try recycling it?
03:21 PM on 11/05/2011
We usually buy environmentally responsible rolls of paper (recycled, soy ink, etc.), so burning it to help get our fire going is not an issue.

You don't have to laminate. Turn the paper over, put double sided scotch tape on each corner, stick it down, and you have an instant placemat that won't go anywhere.

The place mat may not go anywhere but the dye may.
