Tablecloth Alternatives For Entertaining (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

While we're proponents for crisp white table linens and beautifully printed tablecloths, sometimes it's hard to find one that's just the right fit for us as entertaining expert Elaine Griffin cleverly points out. Not to mention, high-quality tablecloths can often be well out of our price range. And unless it's a picnic at the park, flimsy plastic coverings just don't cut it when we're entertaining friends to a cocktail party or a sit-down dinner.

For a smart (and pretty) alternative, Elaine opts for a colorful bedsheet. One advantage is that bedsheets come in myriad colors and patterns, which means an endless number of options. Also, they're machine-washable so clean-up is a cinch. If you have a large rectangular table, go with a queen or king size sheet and make sure it hangs over the edges of the table slightly. For a smaller round table, a twin size sheet will dangle close to the floor and give it an elegant look. For square tables, don't be afraid to fold the sheet so that it hangs over each edge at the same length.

If you're leaning towards materials that are more natural and less color/pattern saturated, canvas drop cloth is also a simple and unfussy option as is any rectangular or square fabric like a large curtain, which is perfect for a draping over a buffet console given its larger size.

Another substitute can be a shower curtain, which can make for a great runner. Make sure to use a fabric curtain that can be washed and fold it accordingly to hide the loops or holes along the hanging end. And if you're looking for easy clean up and a more earthy look, unroll some brown craft paper and use it as a runner down the table.

Yeah, these are great ideas for holiday meals at the homeless shelter.

All of these ideas are ridiculous and unappetizing. Sheets always have a wider band at the top and would be instantly recognizable as such, and who wants to eat on something in which someone has slept? The shower curtain is an even more appalling idea -- unless it's brand new, it's likely to have mildew and lime that all the washing in the world won't eliminate, and the yuck factor of bathroom materials cannot be overcome. How about toilet paper for napkins? These are such disgusting suggestions it sounds like a joke.

have to agree with you, not a single one of theses ideas has merritt. Unless of course one wishes to be a laughing stock and shunned as the most unhygenic hostess in the county. The only way to make these ideas work is to buy those items new and have them altered which negates the savings all together. It would be better to have no table cloth at all then to follow these sugestions.

Do you have to wash the sheets first? Can you use a pillow case as a table cloth on a TV tray?

Just wonderin'.

Why didn't they add a paint drop cloth?

LOL - You can take a shower and then use it as a table runner!

I have quite a few tablecloths and I'm not a wealthy person. They cost under $20, unless you're talking about something to cover a huge table or something high end like lace. But bed sheets? Shower curtains? How about taking the curtains off the windows and slapping them onto your table? Or you could use the plastic sheets and duct tape you bought back after 9/11. If you can't afford a real table cloth, you probably can't afford to entertain.

AOL has no qualms about telling us to buy a $50 lipstick, a $400 pair of boots, but then tells up to use a bed sheet for a table cloth? Oh come on. Table cloths are not expensive...go to Wal*Mart, KayMart, Target, or even Penny's or Sears. I certainly would never serve my guests on a bed sheet!!

Really?? I serve strawberries and whipped cream with chocolate drizzles to my 'significant other' on bed sheets quite often!!! And no complaints!!!

I would sooner eat on the floor.

These are terrible ideas. If you are wanting to set a nice table, there are plenty of places you can buy an inexpensive tablecloth. (Not one of those plastic coated cheesy ones)......I would never use "an old bed sheet", bed linens, or a shower curtain for my table. It would look nicer without a cloth and just setting things nice........shabby chic only looks......shabby

Yes, if you'd like to spar over tacky tablecloths, that would be fine too. I have great taste and will be happy to help you overcome whatever tackiness problems you may have.

OMG, these are awful ideas. Go to Bed Bath and Beyond with a coupon and buy a real tablecloth cheaper than sheets or a shower curtain! It would only be fun to use those things because everyone I know has a good sense of humor and they'd think it was tacky and hysterical!

GREAT! Really great tip-we've several great tablecloths, however 'sheets' come in so many seasonal appropriate designs-next trip to the department store of our choosing we'll shop with this in mind. Thanks!
