For design aficionados Boston's South End is like a gold mine for home decor and antiques. And among the plethora of home boutiques is Hudson by interior designer Jill Goldberg, which recently relocated to its current new location. The fantastically chic shop is 1,500-square-feet large and sells elegant furnishings, both vintage and new, that include hand-carved armchairs and table lamps, upholstered beds and hefty bar consoles. We sat down with Jill for a quick chat about the new location for her shop, her inspiration, and her the backstory behind the new space.
What was the inspiration for this new location?
The inspiration for this space was the idea of growing up. This space was an upgrade from my first retail space. I look at it like I graduated college and moved into the real world. Upgrading to hand-painted DeGournay wallpaper, sparks of whimsy with stripes on part of my ceiling. Also, a more defined selection of vintage items.
I had an urgent need for more square footage for my downtown Boston location. My mother Barbara put it best when she said, "We used to be known as an accessory store with some furniture, and now we will finally be a furniture store with a large amount of accessories."
Are there any highlighted pieces that are specific to this store?
We've just started carrying these wonderful, wooden spindle-turned candelabra from Dunes and Duchess -- so elegant and very modern because of the lacquer finish. The best visual surprise of this store is actually part of the built-in fixture. It's the Chinese fretwork railings that my father-in-law made for the loft space towards the back of the store. His handy work definitely adds that extra level of class and design to the space.
What's been most popular with visitors at your store?
My vintage pieces. I have a great two-piece wooden 14'-high 'Cott's Beverage' sign that I found at Brimfield. It sold within 2 days of being installed and everyone still asks about it.
What are your three favorite pieces from the store?
That's hard. Well first, my woven rattan sofa for which I had the cushions recovered in Peter Dunham's Fig leaf fabric. It's so classic and so stunning. Second, a clementine upholstered club chair from Verellen that I had upholstered in a classic Ralph Lauren tartan. Very masculine and a perennial preppy favorite. And lastly, it's not a for sale but the DeGournay wallpaper on the entry wall. It was a huge splurge but so well worth it! Everyone is wowed by its magnificence, and the best part is that my wallpaper hanger had it placed on muslin in case I decide to move the wallpaper to another wall.
What are three words that sum up this HUDSON store?
Elegant. Classic. Comfortable
Fun fact?
The previous owner of the space used to live here. The loft was his bed and there is a full bath. He is so sweet, and almost tears up when he talks about his years living and working (as a photographer) in this space. And as for me, I actually studied acting in Los Angeles and planned on being a big movie star.
