When it comes to wearing makeup in the workplace, you have to find the careful balance of looking pulled together, but also professional. Too much heavy makeup can send the wrong message, but carefully-applied, subtle touches can really make an difference. We've recruited Jemma Kidd, makeup artist and founder of the Jemma Kidd Makeup School to help us master a look that will take you from a job interview to the boardroom.

Check out the video which features Karla Deras (of the personal style blog, Karla's Closet). Then click through the gallery below for all the products you need to get the look.

I think it's great that she doesn't use all makeup from her own line.

I'm curious -- why didn't she mainly use makeup from her own line??

I was always told that for the office the less make up the better-----some women realy do go overboard. Same goes for ear piercings and jewelry----and oh yeah my pet peave perfume.

Love that models haircut. I want a full picture of it to give to my stylist to replicate for me.
07:41 PM on 11/06/2011
I have the same, exact style (and haircolor too). It's awesome! You'd like it. But if not, don't worry, it DOES grow back. No worries. I love it.

As adorable as her haircut is, I would be careful if you have never had that type of cut before. It can be great for a couple of weeks until the novelty wears off. If you are used to some hair around the face or a ponytail, you might want to re-think getting a pixie.

I believe in a natural look for work. However, I thought the look for this particular model was to dark and boring. I do think that even in the office, there needs to be a pop of color-somewhere!

I don't know, I love her look. I too have short, dark hair and I look great with black eyeliner, black mascara, and a fuschia or dark pink lipstick/lip gloss. I think she looks awesome.

Who is behind all the recent articles on makeup in the workplace, etc.? The COSMETIC COMPANIES are dreaming up "recent studies" (with no proof of studies conducted). Probably because there is much less money being spent on cosmetics during the bad economy.

I actually liked the way the model looked before the makeup.

Well, very simple and basic makeup. A lot of work to look natural. I'd be the boardroom babe with the flashy eyeliner or dark lips.

The model has other makeup on not shown in the video--like the highlighter color under her brow. This isn't my first makeup lesson. lol. The best I've found for brows is Elizabeth Arden Eyebrow powder duo-(less than $20 and lasts for years) you can wet it and use as an eye-liner, or use as the long-lasting eyebrow shaper. I was spending over $25 on lip gloss--then Dior discontinued my favorite lip gloss a few years ago. I hate when that happens! Now I use NYC lip gloss for less than $4 and it stays on and the color true. The best mascara is still DiorShow for $25.00. When I don't want to pay that money I buy Maybelline Volume Express mascara for $8. The Dior eyeshadow sets last forever and stay on all day. The cheaper eyeshadows don't. I try to save where I can and sometimes it pays to treat yourself on a birthday or holiday and get the good stuff that lasts. ---Signed, The Makeup Queen

I'm not able to use Maybelline mascaras, unfortunately. I get smudges under the eyes. Have you tried the Salma Hayek line of makeup yet? I've read those eyeshadows are good. Also, Wet N Wild has improved their eyeshadow formula as well.

I'll have to try Salma Hayek's makeup. I have not heard of it...thank you. The way I get around the smudging with Mabelline mascara is to apply it in the car at a long traffic light---then I turn up the Air Conditioning and dry it all the way. It doesn't end up all over that way. I will definately try the Wet N Wild eyeshadows, I've tried some of their items and they are pretty good. Thanks again!

Dior also makes the best Foundation! I love the Capture Totale!
07:03 PM on 11/06/2011
Capture Totale is awesome...you are so right. I love the skincare line also. The way I get the moisturizer to last longer is to first spray my face with mineral water. I just pour it into a spray bottle and put it on day and night. Then I put just a very small amount of the Capture Totale moisturizer all over my face. I can make a jar last for 6 months and then it is actually less money than the drug store brands to use.

Why can't we also have a before & after photo? MUST we watch a video?

I think the make-up on the model looks pretty drab!

This is not a makeup lesson. It is an advertisement for makeup products.

The video is the lesson, although you are probably already doing everything that was taught.
