The TopStyler: How To Get Red Carpet-Worthy Hair

I gave up on flat and curling irons years ago because I was sick of burning my fingers, frying my strands and ending up with curls that fell flat before 2 p.m. I tried hot rollers, however, after misplacing their pin and clip counterparts, I tossed those to the side and simply embraced my natural texture. But I was recently introduced to a new tool by the creators of The InStyler, the first-ever rotating hair straightener and curling iron, that have convinced me to make another attempt at hair tools.

The TopStyler is made up of ceramic rollers formed in a "C"-shaped shell. Replacing the standard curling iron or flat irons, this styling tool was a huge time-saver on the movie sets of "The Social Network" and "Iron Man 2."

"It’s especially handy when working on set for TV," says InStyler celebrity stylist Dean Banowetz. "You can easily set the hair and send an actress to makeup while the shells are cooling."

But what about using The TopStyler at home? Banowetz's general rules of thumb to follow include:

• Make sure hair is dry. When creating the curl, be sure to always tuck the ends when wrapping hair around your fingers.
• Proper clip placement and allowing the clips to cool (depending on what style you want) is also crucial.
• To ensure your style lasts even longer, spritz hair section-by-section with hairspray before you finger curl.

Click through the slideshow below for more of Banowetz's tips on how to get red carpet-worthy hair using The TopStyler, and watch related curly hair videos.

The TopStyler, $119, available at mass market retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, Target, ULTA, WalMart and online at topstyler.com.

For lived-in waves like "Gossip Girl" starlet Blake Lively, InStyler celebrity stylist Dean Banowetz says it's important to start with dry hair.

Depending on thickness, gather medium sections of hair and secure with the shells. The medium-to-large sections help to diffuse the curl so it provides a more beachy finish with lots of body and movement. Then, take a mid-section from the top of the head and wrap with your fingers going backwards to give your part line a little lift.

THESE ARE AWESOME. It takes a bit of practive- but the really great thing is that if a curl goes wonky you can re-set it. Love these. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. My life is changed.
