A Dining Room Goes From Bare To Beachy (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

Homeowner: Annee Elliot.

The Dilemma: With limited room in her apartment, Annee was using her dining area for everything, whether it's for working or as a dumping ground for random storage. It was a mess and not at all a comfortable dining area. There was no sense of cohesiveness in the dining area, the walls were bare, and the table that was placed close to the wall made the area feel even more cramped and claustrophobic. And more than anything else, Annee's dining area was far from personal or inviting for entertaining friends and guests.

The Fix: Makeover designer Ondine Karady tackles Annee's problems of using the dining area as an all-purpose space by transforming it into a more welcoming gathering spot.

First, Ondine adds more space to the area by pulling the table away from the wall and replacing the old chairs with cleaner, streamlined seating along with a bench. This immediately provides a focal point for the dining area in addition to making the space seem more airy and less cramped.

Then, Ondine personalized the space by hanging some of Annee's favorite surf photos up on the wall behind the dining table. As Ondine notes, while hanging up art seems like a natural way to personalize a space, it's often a little intimidating -- not to mention it's also something that people easily put off doing and never do. To complement the beachy surf photographs, Ondine dressed up the table with a terrarium, which is not only low-maintenance and pretty to look at, but it also really brings the focus to the dining table. And now Annee has a dining area that's mess-free and a place where she can actually entertain and enjoy meals comfortably.

i saw the same designer re-do a living room in a recent video...it was fantastic....it was also filmed well so you could clearly see before and after.

A picnic bench and a surfboard in the dining room? Maybe I'm missing something here, but that does NOT spell "fine cuisine" and entertaining to ME! I wonder where this woman got her degree in design-- Tijuana? Ugh!

Rather pitiful makeover. We're seeing only a corner with way too much film time on the orchids...oh, and a surfboard. Yep, you made real sure we saw the orchids and the board.

I agree - the makeover is pitiful. And I don't want dirt, per se, on the table where I'm going to eat!

This was a very LAME makeover!

I saw no improvement. Still an unattractive room.

Wow, the designer really out did herself, what was her budget $50 bucks??

Lame. The old style padded banquet chairs are replaced with cheesy plastic stack chairs. Some boring framed photos are scattered on the wall. A surfboard is leaning in the corner threatening to injure someone in an eathquake and a tall rectangular terrarium prevents face to face contact during meals. Sorry, this is a questionable improvement, at best. The space is not more inviting... it's just different clutter arranged differently.

A total waste of 2 minutes I will never get back

What a stupid video! Where's the "before and after"? We get no idea of what really went on in this so-called makeover. They show the same things numerous times, but never the entire room or even a full wall. Just's just plain D.U.M.B. If that's the way of Ikea, I'll stay at a distance.

Why do I keep falling for this every single time? The videos are always poorly filmed and edited. The makeovers are always underwhelming at best. We never got to even see what the room looked like! There were more wide-angle shots in The Descent. Das Boot was less claustrophobic than this!

Although the photos are nice, they're framed in a boring white against a white wall. This makes them look as though they were just slapped on the walls. I see no "beachy" look here. I also agree with the other reader, the centerpiece is way too big for the space. A glass dome would have been a better option. This has no "designer" look to it.

Who wants a "beachy" diningroom?
02:55 PM on 11/27/2011
I don't understand the centerpiece its overwhelming. If I had to move it to make room for dining, it would never make it back to the table.

Since when did shoving a terrarium on a table and propping crap in the corner become decor?

EXACTLY!

the next kitchen make over with the family of 5 and the husband who sounds like ray romano- that ended up one big inefficient sloppy mess.
