Hostess Gift Guide: 13 Alternatives To The Bottle Of Wine (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

Even if you don't normally shop for hostess gifts, the holidays kind of obligate you to start. And we know there's the routine bottle of wine or the half-hearted bouquet, but everyone else is going to be doing that as well. So let's stand out from the crowd. The key is to think from the hostess's perspective: That bottle of wine is just pressure (to serve it right then and there), while the bouquet actually creates work (forcing her to spontaneously arrange when she has to make sure dinner is ready). Instead, look for things that'll make your favorite hostess's life easier and less stressful. Easier said than done, right? That's why we did the heavy lifting for you with these practical, affordable gifts that'll be warmly welcomed at any gathering.

Flip through the slideshow to see some of our picks for hostess gifts.

or visit www.ticklemeplant.com to order a TickleMe Plant greenhouse or party favor for your guests

My favorite hostess gift is to give each guest a TickleMe Plant Party Favor. With the party favor each guests leaves with a kit to grow the only plant that moves when you tickle it. TickleMe Plants will close their leaves and lower their branches when tickled.
This is a thoughtful hostess gift as it is a great way to excite your guests about nature and gardening and the will never look at plants the same way again Search TickleMe Plant to see a live plant in action.

OK, maybe my social graces aren't up to par, but I would never bring a hostess gift to a dinner/party. (Except maybe some wine or unique food item that I would tell them to enjoy another time.) I would not expect others to bring one to me, either. When I invite others to my home I just want their company and for them to have a good time. In other words, their presence is the only present I need.

I love some of these. Thank you! And I agree it's nice to go beyond wine or flowers sometimes. I love this list of thoughtful hostess gifts that has 20+ ideas I hadn't thought of but would definitely love to receive.

It would be so bizarre to have a dinner guest bring a faux lynx throw and hand it to me at the front door. How very odd.
Who uses place cards? There are six seats at our table, sit wherever you want.

I wouldn't assume that the host would have my same taste, or that any of this stuff would mach theirs, or that they would even have a use for my "bird dessert stand" or "milk jar dispenser."

But on a side note, do only women host parties? The authoress's presumption that the host is a hostess is something this site's editrix should look at. What do my fellow commentresses think?

I'll take the wine anyway over any of this stuff

Wine or flowers are fine. No gifts.

If I invite you over, please do NOT bring any gifts (other than, maybe, a bottle of wine). We have too much stuff already.

Me too! A bottle of wine will suffice!
