Thanksgiving Crafts: DIY Pillar Candles

Candles help create an amazing ambience, but finding the right color can sometimes be difficult. A great DIY option is to make your own candles using crayons so you can get the perfect hue. To make these pillar candles, you'll need a toilet paper roll, leftover wax or beeswax, crayons, baking paper and embroidery floss. To begin, you'll melt your wax and crayons using the double boiler method. Then, pour the melted wax into the toilet paper roll, which acts as a mold. Sink your embroidery floss wick into the wax and put the candle in the fridge. Let it sit for half an hour, peel the cardboard off and you should have a vibrant candle to display on your table or mantel.

What stupid person gave permission for the even more stupid person to advocate using crayons in candles? First, the flash point of crayons is so drastically different than most candle wax it's a bad combination. Second, the colors sink to the bottom of the wax and in a very short period of time fade completely. Buying proper candle coloring is inexpensive and readily available. Crayons are one of the worse things you can add to candle wax.

Anyone who wants to make candles would be well advised to go to a craft store and purchase the proper supplies, such as molds and wicks.

Irresponsible directions, IMHO. A shoddy crafted candle, such as this one, could easily result in a disaster (damage to furniture, fire, possible loss of life!). A candle should be properly wicked. Crayons should never be used as they will clog the wick; and a toilet paper roll as mold? Pleeease!

I agree. It is also an unnecessary waste of time.

Those crayon candle directions are a bit hokey. A toilet paper roll mold? Won't that leave a paper residue? Also, an embroidery floss wick? And when it says just sink your floss into the wax for the wick.....just how are you sinking that thread into the wax?
I am not so sure.
