Why We Wear Maternity Clothes...Even Though We're Definitely Not Pregnant (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

My greatest talking point of late has been how my coat is not your everyday, run-of-the-mill fall transition coat. Nay, my fall transition coat this year happens to be a maternity fall transition coat. What makes this so interesting to people (or so I like to think) is that I am very definitely not at all and in no way pregnant.

It had never occurred to me to buy maternity clothes before. True, I like to eat so much that it often feels like I'm eating for two--and sometimes it appears I'm with child after a particularly impassioned round with pasta--so I gravitate to the empire waists and drawstrings that have become so commonplace for American retailers.

But I recently cut right to the chase and started buying clothes that actually are made for two after meeting the designer of Hatch, a line of maternity clothing designed to look not-so-maternity after the baby is born. Because the thing about maternity clothes, or so some friends have told me, is that you don't want to drop a lot of money on clothes that look frumpy after the fact.

Long story short, Hatch's Ariane Goldman designs clothes that are so attractive that I decided to wear them pre-pregnancy. Take my new fall coat: simply called The Coat. It has a huge stand-up collar, which I love for warmth and hiding, and the heavy denim makes it drape so well around my body that you'd never guess it could basically fit a beach ball underneath.

But enough about this coat. When I started polling members of the Style team here at Huffington Post Media Group, it turns out that we had a bit of a trend on our hands: many of my stylish colleagues have either mistakenly or intentionally bought maternity clothes at some point or another (you can see them below), and they love them just the same. Because, at the end of the day, true style knows no waist line.

I have never been pregnant but I have been joking for years that when the time comes I'll be fully kitted out already! I don't buy specifically maternity clothes, but my personal style seems to lend itself to that look. I love empire waist dresses and tops, peasant style tops, tank tops worn under loose flowing style t-shirt tops. Every time I walk past my local "Pea in the Pod" store I can't help noticing how everything looks like the clothes I wear already. I'm petite, slim but with big boobs (thanks mom) and maternity-esque style tops & dresses are flattering for my body type.

I've found great pleasure buying maternity clothes and wearing them now baby is born, not only are they comfortable and release me from the pain of wearing spanx with everything. I love http://www.seraphine.co for dresses as they don't all look like typical empire waist line and they're really fashionable.

"Sometimes I overeat, so I wear maternity clothes and it makes me look and feel better." How utterly (if not udderly) American.

I wore a dress just last month to a wine tasting that was maternity and no one knew. I got lots of compliments on it even. I just belted it and adjusted the gathers and it looked so pretty :) What was even better was it was a dress my niece left here after her pregnancy and no longer wanted *score!*

I have seen so many cute maternity tops but were afraid to buy them since I am over weight. I have a very large breast so by the time I buy that 2X top, I could have saved on the maternity ones. Maybe I won't be so shy next time. Thanks

I dunno.. to me, wearing maternity clothes and not being pregnant is like being single with no kids and buying a mini-van.

I suppose that's just me tho.

One of my favorite little black dresses is a maternity dress that I got at Target, it fits really good in the boob area and has a beautiful empire waist that hides the tummy when I get bloated. I wore this dress preggo's and not, and have gotten several compliments on it when I wear it :)

Personally I'm not a fan of maternity clothes. I've purchased the pants while pregnant because of the extra space for the bell to grow, but I'd rather just buy a normal long top that is extra large. I find maternity clothes tend to emphasize the size of the belly and often make a person look further along then they are.

Clothes are all about fit, and everyone is different. I have had 2 children and my belly has never gone back and never will, so I choose clothes that easily glide over that area, clothes that play up my good points. When I was pregnant the first time, I needed real maternity clothes during my last 3 months, but for my second pregnancy I could have worn clothes that were just a little bigger in the bust and tummy areas since my son was a 2 month preemie and I didn't show much. At 52 yrs old, I try to dress to always look nice, but I stay away form elastic waist bands since its tooo easy to gain weight and not notice. As for the coat pictured, its an old design not always used for maternity wear ( remember I Love Lucy?) and it looks nice with the leggings.

Wear what you want, but pul-leeze don't use fashionable maternity clothes as an excuse to overeat, not exercise, gain weight. Another way to coddle the ever-increasing prblem of obesity in this country.

I saw the teaser and thought for sure the habit women are admitting to was peeing in the shower......NOPE. Maybe it's just me....lol.

based on comments, my guess is that a bunch of the commentors haven't really been paying attention maternity fashion of the last 5 years. i wear between a 4 and a 6 and there are maternity tops that i still wear. i love when the sleeves are fitted and the breast area fits well, but there is tons of room around the waist. SO comfortable and i am still stylish. i found a bunch of maternity clothing on sale racks at gap and maternity stores that were super, super cheap and totally flattering. it's been a year and my gap maternity leggings are still in regular rotation.

From the time I was a teen, when I accidentally bought a maternity blouse, through my pregnancies,
to this very day, if I can find a comfortable shirt or not so noticeable maternity dress,( the 6 to 9 months ones)
I buy it if I like it!

But then, I couldn't care less about fashion and go more for comfort.
I am not one bit shy about sharing it's secret with those who ask. Hey!
If they don't like it lol I DON'T CARE!
I am comfortable and that's what I care about!

Holy cow I thought it was only me! I am thin yet apple shaped which is not typical for women. When I buy bigger clothes for a little belly - the rest of me swims in them.
In recent years it seems even women's t-shirts are narrow and long - hugging the belly area (or OK maybe it's me gaining a few and I'm wrong). Maternity tops give you some room at the belly area.
Only when I was anorexic looking did I find it easy to shop for clothes. The slightest belly on me and I am uncomfortable.
