Sometimes a home store so inspiring (and beautiful) comes along that we simply want to truck everything in the shop home with us. Canvas's second store in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood is one of them. The brand, beloved by design-savvy shoppers and decorators, is known for their simple-chic upholstery and pretty accessories that are handmade by artisans from all over the world.

We love the mix of urban-rustic and industrial loft styles at Canvas. And even though buying everything in the shop is an impossible feat for us, it won't stop us from looking to it for design inspiration. We had a quick chat with Canvas founder Andrew Corrie about how it all came about and what he thinks people are looking for in design today. And don't miss the sneak peek of the inside of the amazing store below.

What is the backstory of Canvas?
It all began with a subscription to World of Interiors. The magazine was filled with mountains of gorgeous, faded, timeworn items, which set me off on a vintage furniture buying spree. That search for washed, aged finishes continues as we look around for new things for Canvas.

How did the name Canvas come about?
It refers to a blank canvas and all the potential that comes with it.

What was the inspiration for this second shop in New York?
We wanted a flagship location that could properly showcase our growing furniture line.

Are there any highlight pieces in this new store?
Our new Mercer tufted love seat. It's wonderful and fits two perfectly!

What's been most popular with shoppers so far?
Our expanded ceramics selection. We're introducing some bold colors through our spongeware and tinware collections, which have been big hits.

Three words that describe Canvas?
Simple. Sustainable. Style.

What's something that most people don't know about Canvas?
That we're still a mom and pop business, and everyone gets involved!

In your opinion, what are people looking for in design today?
Honesty.

Sorry, but no, this is not even close to being the most beautiful shop ever. I worked at high-end boutique and furnishings shop in Central Texas that was light years ahead in terms of visual appeal. And, that is just one example I can cite.
