From Marilyn Monroe To Gwen Stefani: Style Icons Then And Now (PHOTOS)

It seems like every day there's a new actress starring in an indie movie (wait, wasn't she born, like yesterday?) or model blowing up the catwalks during fashion week. In today's celebrity and fashion-obsessed culture it has become necessary to make sure your style lexicon is up to date. But everything that you think is cool has a reference to the past--ask any designer, they've all been inspired by something that happened before their time. It's important to know the genesis, because trust us, dear readers, one day you will be the ones rolling your eyes at the youngster who doesn't know who Linda Evangelista is, or Mia Farrow was the original pixied darling. We've compiled a list of *some* of the new style-setters and you can tell us, did we leave anyone out?

Are you kidding me! Monroe is still a global legend, A. Hepburn is still famous worldwide years after her death, and Sophia Loren is known onsite anywhere in the world. It takes more than a few hit songs, a nice body or fancy perfume to make a true Icon. Stefani and Portman, Vergara and the rest? I don't think they will stand that test of time. Not even close. All these new age celebrities are just that and no more. Not Icons by any means.

This is the Funniest of all of the articles I have looked at on this site. There is no way that there is anyone that can exuded the kid of charisma and charter of actors of the 50 or earlier. Just the mixture of different types of people that the early stars were made up from is totally different. Most of the so called stars of today come from the same live styles, way of thinking and the creative process they use is like the wall paper in Wall Mart they all look the same. The bottom line to the actors of today with a few exceptions is the number of movies they are asked to make. Take a look at the number of movies made by the great stars of the forties and fifties. Last but not least is most of the real stars them had enough class to stay away from public political fights and express them selves in a way that did draw broad attention to them selves, today it is part of the act!.

We no longer have Movie Stars who are true icons.........
That era is long gone.

Nobody compares to Marilyn, Audrey, Sophia or Grace Kelly as far as glamour is concerned.

Can't help but to look at this and think (from a writer's perspective) that SOMEONE let their deadline get way behind! The article had SUCH potential only to fizzle. How can a fashion model who most of us haven't even heard of be the "new fashion/beauty Icon/trend setter" to step into the shoes of Lauren Hutton and Iman? While Gwen is attractive and a talented singer, she hardly makes me think of Marilyn - white blonde hair, red lip stick, and a thin angular body hardly brings to mind the sexy curves and allure of Monroe! And where is Grace Kelly, Lena Horne, Josephine Baker, Hedy Lamar...for yesterday's Icons? AND where is Selma Hayak, Penelope Cruz, Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, Gwyneth (even if we don't agree with her Goopy newsletter) Paltrow? Finally, where is Vogues' recent cover girl; Meryl? Give yourself more time to meet your deadline next time!

I think it's laughable that some of the "past icons" you show are cited for their status in the earlier 2000's. Wow, what ancient history!

Or did you take the hot newer crop and just fish around looking for anyone from any decade they might happen to resemble (I think this is the answer.)?

BTW, the world did not begin revolving in 1990-just thought you needed to know!

LOL...so TRUE about those dates for "past icons!" Think the writer was just in a big hurry to meet the deadline.
