Home Makeover: A Room With A View Gets A Fresh New Look (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

Homeowners: Sheetal & Shakti C'Ganti.

The Dilemma: One of the biggest selling points in this living room is its stunning view of the Manhattan skyline. But the room's narrow rectangular shape and large windows lining two sides of the space prompted Sheetal and Shakti to crowd all the furniture against one wall. This instantly turned the space into an uninviting, make-shift sitting area that's far from a comfortable gathering spot for hanging out and entertaining.

The Fix: Step in makeover expert, designer Ondine Karady, who readjusts the flow in the living room and updates the overall look with modern streamlined pieces that not only transform the space into a stylish place for entertaining, but also provide extra storage underneath the big windows.

Given the narrow shape of the room, careful furniture arrangement is essential to making the space work. So one of the first things on Ondine's agenda is bringing in console cabinets, which she positions along the windows. The obvious benefit of these cabinets is that they offer extra storage and help hide electronics, but they also serve a design purpose -- they balance out the space so that it no longer looks disproportionate with only furniture on one side of the room.

Next, Ondine approached seating. She set the sectional in the middle of the room and instead of using one monolithic cocktail table, which would visually and physically take up a lot of space, she opted for small nesting tables that can be moved around. This is especially helpful when Sheetal and Shakti want to entertain now since they now have multiple surfaces for people to use for food and drinks. At the same time, these transportable side tables help keep the room feeling airy and open.

Also, when there's an awesome view like the one here in Sheetal and Shakti's living room, it's easy to just ignore blank walls, but Ondine knew better. Art hung salon-style now occupies the empty wall behind the sectional, serving as perfect complements to the awesome view outside the windows.

Finally, Ondine brings in colorful pillows and accessories as finishing touches. Artfully arranged objects dot the tables and sit along the windows, which pull together the overall look. For easy ways to create captivating vignettes and stylish displays, check out these simple arranging tips.

A flat screen TV against a glass window?????? You have got to be kidding me. When it is bright outside, it will be hard to see the screen, and at night,.................., I would not hire this designer if they were the only designer available. It looked austere and clean before, cluttered and messy after. And that ? pillow. Goodness. The highlight of the room, the marvelous view, should have been accentuated, not cluttered up with katchke.

The resale beige kills it for me. Not to mention, the designer doesn't want to accent the elongated room so what does she do, draw two long lines, one against the wall and the other against the windows to draw the eye down an elongated room. Yuck. I would have had something with color to accent against the white walls and cut off the room in the foreground with a loveseat and possibly wrapped it around into the wall area. This would have created a cove setting, where each set of seats would have had a window view. Much better for this type of room.

Given this rather uninteresting space, the designer did an excellent job. No matter what a structural column dominates and it's, effect over all a big negative, however the storage units with well paced books and art have successfully, (insofar as is possible), overcome that challenge. Great pied-e'-terre for batchler or young couple. The unit is all about the view, the view, the view, so enjoy.

YUKKK.. How much talent does it take to add a few little tables? There is a show on TV, they really make jewels out of almost nothing; but this one comes not even close.

I like everyones comments, as a educated designer I think it just got more cluttered. The space needs clean lines, color on the walls and a cool accent piece. Not sure about any of that stuff in the space.

I did not like the design..not my taste..I would have preferred some dramatic flair to add style and compliment the unbelievable views that they have..Some color on at least one of the walls (like behind the couch) and a colorful area rug on the floor. It's just so bland and neutral .I did like the cabinets though under the window as they do not obstruct view but would have done something totally different with rest of room.. I guess to each their own..

It's a little better than before with some added color but that question mark pillow adds IMO a disturbing touch of uncertainy. Something I would want to avoid these days for there's already too much of that looming over our heads in this bad economy.
Personally I'd ad some interesting drapes and color to the boring cold windows and soften their outides a bit, hate them the way they are. Devoid of any personality which pretty much sums up my feelings toward this "cheap, ugly, minimalistic modern cubical look lately.
I'll stick with the country look thank you.

You're absolutey right about the windows and adding some color. But "country look" in a glassy New York City high rise? I don't think so.

If that's a professional makeover I'll stick to the much cheaper amateur ones thanks.

Agree, personally I find nothing comforting about it. Guess I prefer a more down to earth country look with wooden earth tones and colors.

So you darkened up a very bright room? Then smeared it with junk. The qustion mark pilllow is so out of place even in that train wreck.

Too much junk added.

It looks great, but you lost me with the question mark pillow. That needs to go.

I know a friend who lives in the projects. Please help her. lol

Definitely not impressed with the makeover...way too cluttered, wall gallery looked very mismatched, the question pillow does not fit, cocktail tables look like from a tag sale. This was not a sophisticated NYC makeover and the room looks much smaller and narrower than before. I think the designer gets an "A" for effort, but totally missed the mark on optimizing the space for design and entertaining.
