Design Inspiration: How To Prepare Guest Rooms For The Holidays

The holidays are finally upon us and hopefully you've got all your Christmas decorations up and all your entertaining plans in place -- we'll admit we still have a few things on our to-do list...like cleaning. And on that note, if you're hosting guests this year, it's time to get the guest room ready for them, their luggage and everything else they'll have in tow. While setting up the room for your guests might seem stressful, it doesn't have to be that way. Keep these following points in mind and you'll be panic-free and ready to host your visitors comfortably and happily when they arrive.

Make room in the guest room. If you use your guest room as a storage space for clothes, books, shopping bags and other non-everyday items for 360 days out of the year, then this is the one time you'll have to clear it out. Clear out any closet space so that your guests will feel at home during their visit and not like college students living out of their suitcases. You can give away or donate old clothing and books, take out old boxes, etc. This is the best time to do some pre-New Year de-cluttering.

Do some furnishing. It's not the be all end all if you don't have these furnishings in your guest room, but having them will really make your guests' stay at your home that much more pleasant. You can even use similar pieces from other rooms in your home for the duration of the your guests' visit.
- A dresser or a small chest -- it gives your guests the option of stowing away their clothes and, yes, gifts for you. Don't ruin the surprise for you and your family.
- A nightstand -- this is a great place for them to put any keys and rest glasses or books.
- Lamps -- guest rooms always seem to have such dim lighting, so the ideal would be to have a pair of lamps on nightstands flanking the bed. If you have a floor lamp, make sure you have a new bulb and pull it slightly away from the corner to let the light circulate.

Change up the bedding. Even if you just changed the bed linens in the guest room not too long ago, slip on some fresh sheets for your guests. There's nothing more comforting than the smell of clean linens for guests when they first walk into the guest room.

Clean the floors. Sweep and wipe down wood floors. Vacuum carpet. There's nothing worse as a guest than finding strands of hair or balls of dust in the room you're staying in.

Put in a candle. A scented candle is best since the aroma will fill the room, but a normal thick cylinder candle will equally help set a nice atmosphere just fine.

No guest room? No problem. Here's how to turn a family member's bedroom into a guest room.

Forget most of the advice! Clean room, clean linens and a nightlight (for getting up in the middle of the night in an unfamiliar place) and extra blankets ( some people want more warmth, others less) and you're set. If they want reading material, they will either bring it with them or borrow from what you have in the house. However, the idea of removing - and disposing of - items that tiy wish to keep just for a two or three day - or even a weeklong - visit is ridiculous. Try to make a little space in the closet for party clothes that need to be hung up and you're set. If they want hotel amenities, I'm sure they can find plenty of hotels. If they ask - and ONLY if they ask - before the visit, you can tell them what hotels are available at what rates.

Clean the room and change the linens . Make sure there is at least one chair and a working television . Before you put a lot of scented items in there , make sure your guest can tolerate them and appreciate them . In the guest bath put some new unopened tooth brushes and other toiletries that may have been forgotten. Make sure your guest bed is a quiet one and pulled slightly away from the wall. You may want to check your own bedroom for silence too .

If my guests don't like the room & what I have to offer they are free to stay at a hotel at their expense. I'm not the Ritz

They should follow this up with an article about how to be a gracious guest. The first line should read "Stay in a hotel if at all possible."

I always have clean bedding for my guest room, extra blankets, a night table with a lamp, books, a pad and pencil (for any notes or phone numbers they may want to jot down), guest soaps and lots of fresh towels in their bathroom. I even keep the bathroom stocked with things they may have forgotten, such as new toothbrushes, disposable razors, feminine hygeine products, travel size deodorant, shampoos, etc. But I refuse to clear out all of my stuff before they get here.

I know none of my family or friends would even want me to go to all the trouble of clearing out everything, only to have to put it right back in a few days. Besides, I think having nothing personal of mine in there (art, books, etc.) would make the room seem too impersonal to them, and not reflect me, my family, or our home.

So, to the author of this article, sorry - you sort of missed the mark on this one.

Wha'??? So she is coming for 2 days and I have to donate the precious things I have collected for years, the box of Christmas and birthday wrap I buy at 50% off and use as needed, and the gorgeous ribbons? The extra coats I store there for really really cold days. It all has to go? For a 2 day stay, okie dokie I will get right on that! And I have to clean it? Who would have thought of that? And I need to replace the perfectly good, working, hardly used light globe? That is why we need you guys, how would we get by without you?

A luggage rack is essential for guests.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The best way to furnish a guest bedroom for holiday guests is to pick the most uncomfortable furnature in the world so that after three days they are happy to LEAVE!

Absolutely! You know what they say: Guests are like fish, after three days they all go bad.

The article was supposed to show how to install a suspended ceiling, the only thing it showed was different types of ceilings. RENAME ARTICLE !

I also add a city tour map, current newspaper and a transportation guide so that they can enjoy their down time independently.

A house is not a B&B. Clean linens, a well kept room, a bathroom, and to know where the kitchen is all that is necessary. If more luxury is desired they are welcome to check into a 5 star hotel.

Yes, I like the idea of a nightlight- it is hard to maneuver if you have to get up in the night and can't remember where the door is! I always try to include a few books or magazines near the bed that I know my guests will like, in case they want to do some reading in bed before they fall asleep.

i'm not about to half kill myself to make a spare room look like the hilton for anyone for a few days visit. they're already getting free room and board. a clean bedroom should be enough. if not, they can go somewhere else. i've never had anyone complain about my extra room having stuff in the closets, ect. good grief. there's a bed, nightstand, fan and tv. more than enough.
