Ice Cube Talks Midcentury Design, Charles and Ray Eames (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

This should give you something to talk about at your next cocktail party: Ice Cube did a tribute to Charles and Ray Eames. Yeah. Turns out he's not just a huge design fan, but studied Architectural Drafting back in college. Yep, Ice Cube--N.W.A. member and the guy behind the inexplicable "Are We There Yet?" movie/TV series--loves midcentury design.

But what can we say? This documentary warms our hearts. He's genuinely excited about the Eames' work and takes the snob factor completely out of design talk. Which we're totally all about. Check out the full scoop at Pacific Standard Time.

That was awesome! Love the Eames' designs, love Ice Cube - and now I want to know more about his thoughts on other architectural styles.

Ice Cube has given us but a small bit of the work by Charles and Ray Eames. I am pleased that he is a fan of mid-century architecture and design. I would like to know more about his architectural thoughts

To many I'm certain this may cause a knee jerk reaction like a scooby doo sigh Huugh?!? The world and culture really robs itself of an acendency into arts, science, literature and medicine by virtue of it's racist mentalities. For a millinnia Africans have contributed to civilizations only to be left out and removed from the anals of history! To date no mention of Africans contributions. If left up to each race to forward their own ancestry and subsequent contirbutions then segregation is validated in a culture that stands on it's presumtion of a color blind society...

your comments are totally unrelated to the beauty of thoughts that Ice Cube gave us. He is sharing what he learned in school and loves. What matter how he presents it! And what does your diatribe have to do with architectuure and furniture. Get the rock ocff your back.

No doubt! Ice thoughts and opinions were very appropriate. So tell me outside of MLK, and Fredrick Douglas what other "famous" African Americans did you learn about in school?

I didn't know that about Ice Cube. Very cool. I know of a few other rappers who were also educated in non-entertainment related industries. When Ice Cube was with N.W.A., it wasn't cool to admit to being from the suburbs and being smart. Now, it's cool and others should know to see that they too can reach higher. And I love how this informative piece remained hip. I take it he was in character, but it worked for me. I wanted more.

I watched the documentary about the Eameses last night. Really interesting stuff. I was inspired by Charles's creativity and his need to produce what he was imagining. Even though he didn't graduate and obtain a degree in architecture, he still carried on with that endeavor, designing buildings as well as furniture. It inspires me to continue with my own endeavors.

Like Eames, I attended architecture school, and I did very well there, earning an overall grade of "A" in design one particular semester, when only two "A"s were awarded to a class of 75 architecture students. Sadly for me, I floundered in the upper classes, since my extremely slow designing method didn't allow me to finish my designs by the allotted time, and I subsequently "flunked out" of my fourth year class. I have remained creative over the years, however, focusing upon inventions and such, which, with no time constraints, I can take as long as I need to complete the project. I am about to get a patent on one invention that I have been developing for over 20 years now -- an apparatus worn by joggers. I spent six months this year constructing a working model, and it was a success. All that I need is one major success, and I will build a studio/workshop to carry on with my work. Luck to me.
