Stars Reveal Their Moms' Beauty Advice: Mother Knows Best

Growing up, how many times did my mom remind me to reapply sunscreen? Or drink more water? Honestly, more times than I care to remember. However, what may have seemed overbearing at the time was pretty solid advice instilled at a fairly early age -- and I'm certainly appreciating it all these years later. I know I'm not the only one: Mothers have been bestowing their tried and true beauty tips since the dawn of time -- whether we listened to it or not. Be it an introduction to makeup (or rather a strict ban until a specific age), relentless reminders to moisturize or a favorite fragrance passed down, our mothers' insight was incredibly important during those formative years and beyond...

Inspired by our own moms' advice, we decided to round up the best tips that celebrities got from their mothers. And we want to hear what kind of wisdom your mom imparted on you. Let us know in the comments!

  • Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn

"I would say application - she's so good at applying makeup. She can do it in five seconds and she can do it without a mirror, I remember watching her. I'd sit there as she put her makeup on and think, 'Gosh, she's an angel." -- Stylelist Getty

  • Cate Blanchett

"She was quite obsessed quite early -- before everyone was talking about it -- with sun protection. She would always send us out in shirts or hats which I was always trying to rip off. So there was always a big awareness of that. She was big on moisturizing, before you even think you need to. It didn't make me skin-obsessed, but it was certainly made me aware." -- Stylelist

  • Lady Gaga

Gaga, who calls her mother Cynthia Germanotta and Princess Diana her beauty influences, says her mom taught her to wash her face with Ivory soap. -- People Style/Watch FilmMagic

  • Jessica Alba and Catherine Alba

"She still tells this to me: don't wipe my face too hard or wipe my eyes too hard when I'm cleansing my face or when I put lotion on." -- People/StyleWatch FilmMagic

  • Eva and Eva Mendes

"She used to use baby powder in her hair to get a tousled look. It's a great trick I now do!" -- Celebrity Beauty Buzz WireImage

  • Camila Belle

"As cliché and generic as it might sound, washing my face has been something my mom has always impressed upon me," says the fresh-faced star. "I always, always wash my face. Number one thing, no matter how tired." -- People/StyleWatch Getty

  • Kim Cattrall

"My mom used Olay when I was a little girl. We lived in a real rural Vancouver island town, and she loved the ads, she loved the romance. It was sort of this Ali Baba, liquid kind of mystery." -- People/StyleWatch Getty

  • Amanda Peet

"Go with the flow of the aging process." -- People/StyleWatch Getty

  • Emmy Rossum

"I would always watch her tweeze her eyebrows. She always told me [to] fear over-tweezing, so I tweeze one hair and then I have to stop and look - but I don't go to a special brow guru; I do it myself." -- People/StyleWatch Getty

  • Nicky and Kathy Hilton

"[My mom]'s been using age preventative creams since she was like 19 -- so I started at 20." -- People Style/Watch Getty

  • Demi Moore and Rumer Willis

"I moisturize, moisturize, moisturize -- that's the most important lesson my mother passed on to me, and I say it to my daughters all the time." -- Allure.com Getty

  • Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner

"My mom always had a big fragrance tray and we'd always spray on fragrances. I fell in love with fragrance early on." -- People/StyleWatch WireImage

  • Scarlett Johansson and Melanie Sloan

"My mom would always say, 'Drink a lot of water and get a lot of sleep and don't smoke.' So I follow some of those rules. And growing up, my mom always wore a lot of makeup. My mom was very glamorous. I used to sit at her vanity and use her makeup -- I know a lot of moms, they don't really like their daughters to wear a lot of makeup. My mom was always very encouraging, she used to take me shopping so I learned a lot of about makeup application from her actually." -- Stylelist FilmMagic

  • Selita Ebanks

"That woman is like MacGyver, She told me to take off my makeup with oil and a warm rag and don't rub too hard, just very gentle around the eyes. Before you go in the shower, dry brush from the ankles up and from your arms towards the heart and it helps stimulate the skin, which helps prevent cellulite and sagging skin." -- People/StyleWatch FilmMagic

  • Jessica and Kim Biel

"One piece of advice was from my friend's beautiful French mother, who literally only ever washed her face with Dove soap and water and she has the most beautiful skin. And I'm looking at her going, 'Have I been messing this up my whole life. . . buying all these beautiful products and I just needed Dove soap -- what?!'" -- BellaSugar WireImage

Curious what most of these moms advise on cosmetic surgery.

I have always been very afraid of aging, you know, becoming old and useless and unattractive. When I turned 50, I decided to do something about it. I've spent fortunes on face creams and anti-aging serums… but using GenFX is the first time I've tried turning back the clock from the inside out. It's also the last time I'll spend a fortune on face creams! Now everyone says I look 35! Http://tiny.cc/GenFX

I remember watching Goldie Hawn on the 60's show Laugh In. I'd say she's done very well for herself. You go girl.

The Mom at the beginning of the story wasn't looking too good to me! Considering it is an American writing the story I guess all we can expect is a purely surface evaluation of anyone or anything!

My mother was very beautiful; she was Miss Georgia 1936. That was a hard act to follow. She was big on moisturizing, but she wore no make up except lipstick. I didn't have her perfect skin, but she told me that someday I would be glad I have oily skin. I always wore makeup like my aunt and it helps protect your skin from the sun and other elements. My mother was right about the oily skin. I am 61 now and my facial skin is still somewhat oily but I don't care because I look about 15 years younger than I am!
