New Year's 2011 Hair: Here's An Updo That Involves... A Sock? (VIDEO)

Written by Stylelist Blogger Network Member Kailani Andrade of Kailani's Korner:

I am always on the lookout for a new hairstyle that is fast and fashionable. I have long locks and I am known for always having my hair off my face in a ponytail or a messy bun.

But this holiday season I discovered what is known as the "sock bun." I have to admit, the first time I attempted the sock bun it was awful. It wasn't fast or easy, but with practice came perfection. I sported my new favorite hairdo to church on Christmas Eve and after being asked many times, "How did you make your bun so perfect?" I decided that I should share my secret with the world. Make sure to watch my tutorial above.

Yes, this is not a new hairstyle. It has been very popular amongst the African American community for decades now.

This has been around a long time, when my grandmother was young, around 1905, they wove donut shaped hair forms from hair they collected from their brush into a little box with a hole in the top called a hair receiver which kept the hair untangled until you had enough to weave with. That way the form matched their hair perfectly. They used to leave the out hair sort of loose around the sides, with a tight bun in the middle of their head, it was called the Gibson Girl style. The slang term for the bun form was a "pschy". The sock sure is easier!

DUH............this is NOT new! I will bet you dollars to donuts that her Mother, an Aunt or her Grandmother told her about it.

Some people will do ANYTHING for their 5 minutes 14 seconds of fame!!!!!!!

OH...........I'll bet if she ask her elder relatives, she will also find out that back in the 40's and 50's, they used a thing call a "rat" to form a bun or french twist. Most drug stores sold them in their hair care section or Beauty Parlors sold them.

Sock Bun has been around for a while. I remember wearing them when I was in the 7th grade. So at least 13 years ago. Not new.

You will find this WAY easier if you snug that sock to your head. and then cover it nice and smooth with your hair.. wind the hair at the bottom of the sock and pin tight. Then spray to keep it set. It is just Way easier that way than rolling that hair up like she did. I don't know as I could do that. also if your hair is long enough you can take what's left fromt he roll and curl and place them here there and fancy it up with some gems. it is really a very nice look I think.

Military females have been using this trick for sometime.... I remember when I found out people used a sock to get such a perfect looking bun, I thought it was silly lol. But it does create a nice, neat bun, perfect for when in uniform. I wish I knew about this when I took ballet!
