17 Cheap Ways To Stay Warm This Winter (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

Just hearing about a fifteen foot snowfall in Alaska has us feeling cold, so we're turning our attention to easy ways to keep warm this winter. You might roll your eyes and turn up the heat, but not so fast. Turning up the thermostat will also crank up the electric bill. Instead, we started thinking of great inexpensive options. From using a space heater to wearing fuzzy socks to sealing hard to find drafts, click through the slideshow below for 17 ideas that'll help you keep the winter freeze at bay.

Close Fireplace Vent

Fireplaces are sneaky when it comes to drafts because it's so easy to forget to close the vent. While a fire is roaring the vent must be open, but close the vent as soon as the flame has gone out to keep your house toasty warm. If you infrequently use your fireplace, it may be worth investing in a Chimney Balloon, which is an inflatable balloon that creates an air-tight seal in the chimney.

Duh, wear layers of clothes during the day AND in bed at night. If you are chronicly cold when your spouse is warm, have your thyroid checked.

I have a feather comforter and in the winter I have a flannel duvet for it. I do not even need the heater on at night, even when there is a deep frost (although I do set it to come on before I get up). I would recommend getting a down/feather comforter to stay warm... even better than an electric blanket (more energy efficient too).

Many a laugh here! Who would have thought that closing doors might help keep heat in and cold out?? But I didn't read a word about exercise? Taking a fast half-hour walk - or doing some other activity if you can't walk - whilst wearing warm clothes really gets my feet and hands warmed up for hours. It is like having a heater turned on inside you.

There are many young people that might not think of all of these solutions to staying warm. Some of these ideas are not common sense.

Reversing the ceiling fan makes perfect sense: Hot air rises. If you reverse the fan, it literally curls the hot air up and downward as it hits the walls and, ergo, keeps you warm! :) Hope that made sense.

This is for the Bed: Buy a sleeping bag thats rated to under 0 degrees F, Open it up and use it like a comforter (same Principle) very warm and you can use it during summer and winter. For cold feet get a Heating pad, put it at the foot of your bed, its great.

Try This: Take 1-11/2 cups of rice, put it in an old pair of socks, (one inside the other)
Tie or sew the end so the rice doesn't get out.
toss it into the microwave for 45-60 seconds
Presto: Instant hand warmer, the heat usually lasts for half an hour or so.

There is another way to keep warm. Make any heated beverage. Hold the mug to your heart. It will warm you up all. It is great! Just be careful, too hot can burn your skin. I wear sweater and hold a mug to my heart.

I turn off my heat except at night, then only up to 55 or 60. I use a space heater. I work from home and since that is the only room I am in, that is the only room I heat. I have the cheapest bills in the neighborhood.

I know a man I worked with who didn't turn off the heat, but did what you did, at 55 one day his wife called and the water pipes broke, coat him more than any heat bill would have been. So you have been lucky so far.

I'm still laughing about the "Forever Lazy Suit" haha too funny!

I am glad they were joking!

Forever lazy and the snuggly things are ugly and a waste of money. I live in a mobile home no matter what you do they are drafty. Seal the drafts add insulation if you can afford it and use extra blankets if needed. Electric blankets and space heaters run up your electric bills the humidifier is Ok but still adds to the electric bill. We burn 150 gallons of Kerosene per year because we have reinsulated floors walls and ceilings. NO FANS ceiling or others they are colder in the winter. Also caulked all we can. We use the least amount because we have combined efforts over the years.

You got to be joking...I'm from Miami and we are going through the coldest winter we have ever had. The local feral Iguanas are freezing to death and I'm looking for ways to warm my home so me and my pet iguanas can make it through the colder temps...Why does everyone think Florida is so warm?

They think Southern California is really warm, too... but I lived next to the ocean, and when it was foggy in the winter, and windy, it would chill me to the bone... and I grew up in the Sierras near Yosemite in the snow. I was surprised it was so cold on the ocean.

I just turn the thermostat up.

I have the best kept secret of the heating and cooling world. Geo Thermal. Quiet, clean and toasty warm in the winter and sweet cool air in the summer. Cannot tell which month it is looking at my powerbills.
