7 Beauty Lessons You SHOULDN'T Follow From Hollywood's Golden Age

HuffPost Social Reading

These days images of an overly-altered Heidi Montag or Britney Spears with her unfortunate extensions are scary reminders of the drastic (and not always pretty) lengths celebrities will go to achieve their own and society's ideals of beauty. This has been going on for decades in Hollywood, even the most stunning of actresses from the '30s, '40s and '50s were implementing their own bizarro beauty techniques to hide personal insecurities.

Did you know that Rita Hayworth felt so uncomfortable about her low hairline she had it raised, then dyed her black hair that famous shade of red? Elsewhere, both Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe shaved their faces to get rid of unwanted peach fuzz. And Marlene Dietrich apparently had her upper molars removed to create shadows underneath her cheekbones, which looked even more dramatic with the contrast of the black and white film of the time. Admittedly, I've made my share of questionable beauty decisions: I nearly burned my face off with a shall-not-be-mentioned face exfoliant, all in the name of luminous skin. This subsequently seemed counter-productive since I walked around with my hand over my face for the next five days.

Herewith, a round-up of the some of the more alarming beauty tricks favored by the women of Hollywood's Golden Age:

UPDATE: A previous version of this post stated incorrectly that Marilyn Monroe grew hair on her face due to a side-effect from a hormonal cream.

Keep your eyes on Dana Ceres, an up and coming actress who is not only talented and beautiful, but very kind hearted and sincere. Something you don't find that often in Hollywood. www.imdb.me/danaceres

I used an inexpensive acne wash when I developed acne as the result of taking Dhea. Good grief, it was actually like a chemical peel. It was one of those inexpensive washes in a pump bottle. Product has been around forever, may use it to remove paint in the kitchen.

Where's the Rita Hayworth picture I came to see?

Tallulah Bankhead used to brush out her hair with kerosene to make it shiny, often while characteristically smoking.

We all do seemingly odd things to look our best...but they work! Excuse me, I have to go apply "Preperation H" under my eyes, they're really puffy - Chinese food last night and not enough sleep!

All of this seems pretty tame compared to todays so called beauties of Hollywood. Let’s see you have Botox, liposuction, breast implants, butt implants, colored contacts, hair extensions, starvation, bulimia, hair coloring, teeth removal, waxing, electrolysis, plastic surgery, wigs, tanning (to a beautiful orange glow) caps on the teeth, teeth whitening (for that glow in the dark look) permanent hair straightening, perms, bleaching of skin, tattooed makeup, makeup to cover tattoos, eyelash extensions, fake nails, and if all that is not enough then they can always have someone air brush them to look perfect…but oh my goodness the actual beauties of Hollywood of the past lined their lips to look fuller, my goodness they were so crazy.

I agree. It seems that the writer decries something as relatively minor as Miss Hayworth's electrolysis, yet doesn't seem to have any problem with todays 'actresses' Botoxing themselves into a stupor. Miss Hayworth is still considered one of the great Hollywood beauties--I wonder how many of the current crop are going to be remembered forty years from now?
03:31 AM on 01/14/2012
I doubt anyone is going to remember these so called “actresses” 5 years from now.
01:31 PM on 01/13/2012
You said everything and more that I was thinking. And what is wrong with shaving your face? Every 6-8 weeks, I shave off the peach fuzz. I used to use hair removal products and ended up with raw or red skin for 2-3 days, then one day I decided to dry shave with a twin blade razor and it worked great, have done it ever since for 5-6 years now. And no it does not grow back thicker or darker.

Plastic surgery is so prevaliant these days,
you connot be sure if what you are seeing is what it is.

If Angelina let the air out of her lips, she would look
quite ordinary. Is she mulotto ?
How about Lady GaGa, ugly is on !!
01:01 PM on 01/13/2012
Angelina Jolie has naturally plump lips - you can tell because her daughter inherited them. Shiloh had plump lips even at a year old, and I don't think even Hollywood is quite ready to give collagen implants to an infant.
01:32 PM on 01/13/2012
You're right, she does have naturally plump lips, look at pictures of her as a child.
12:21 PM on 01/13/2012
Very interesting.
12:00 PM on 01/13/2012
Really?? Are we really going to nitpick these legendary film stars??
The "actresses" today could not hold a candle to them.
They made Hollywood what it is.
Leave well enough alone.
12:41 PM on 01/13/2012
Agreed x 10, hpycmpr 155. Not only do most not look as good they can't act as well either. Most who can actually act today are not known for their great beauty. To get both attributes is a thing of the past.
01:52 PM on 01/13/2012
That is for sure!
11:29 AM on 01/13/2012
Whatever they did, they are all much better looking and had more class than the current crop of starlets.
12:28 PM on 01/13/2012
They sure looked a lot healthier.! To be sure !
12:40 PM on 01/13/2012
yeah but dying your hair to me, even that is a sin. I've never dyed my hair, never got fake nails either. I don't believe in it. Thankfully, I am a natural redhead and people go to lengths to look like I do naturally. But still if I was ugly I would just accept the way I am....probably. Maybe not - glad I'm not ugly.
02:09 PM on 01/13/2012
I had natural strawberry-blonde ( and later ) light auburn hair. I started dying it brown at age 13 because redheads were teased so badly. Now I'd kill to have that natural color again :-)
11:25 AM on 01/13/2012
If you read Rita Hayworth's Biography you would know that the studio made her remove her widows peak and change her hair color so she wouldn't appear so ethnic. After all, she began her career dancing with her father in an act called the "Dancing Cansino"s.
02:16 PM on 01/13/2012
Personally, I don't think her low hairline made her look "ethnic." It was just unattractive. I've seen photos of her when she was a young girl and it really did detract from her looks. I think of it more as a correction than a beauty treatment. I mean, compared to what women do to themselves today, having electrolysis to make your hairline no longer look like it touches your eyebrows is not a big deal. I do imagine it was a painful process in the early 40s, though.

03:11 PM on 01/13/2012
If you're amazed at that, watch a couple of episodes of "RuPaul's Drag Race" sometime. Now, THAT will show you what can be done in the makeup room.

According to TCM, there was an actress from the 40's-50s who used to have her upper lip anesthetized before filming because she hated the little wrinkles that formed when she spoke. It might have been Gloria Grahame, but I'm not 100% sure.

It was the beauty experts surrounding her that decided to raise Rita Hayworth's hairline. Considering the fact that she remains one of the most beautiful and glamorous stars of all time, perhaps we should consider that they made the right decision, event though YOU wouldn't recommend it. Everything done for the sake of beauty is not necessarily a mistake. Early pictures of many stars -- Marilyn Monroe and Julie Andrews come to mind -- show that natural beauty can be enhanced.
01:50 PM on 01/13/2012
Julie Andrews never did anything to enhance her beauty.

Watch the original 1956 television production of "Cinderella" and tell me that's the same Julie Andrews of "Mary Poppins."
