Installing a doggy door does not relieve you of your responsibility to take your dog for a walk at least once every day.

Shower curtain rings will change your home? Really? No.

The only one of these suggestions that anyone can afford in this economy is the shower curtain rings. Awesome.

Actually, many of these are under $40--definitely not the same price as shower curtain rings (unless you really get fancy), but not a huge investment at all. The closet and sliding door DIYs are going to be more, of course.

I'm relieved not to see "panel the basement to make a rec/tv room" on the list. Having been in real estate for a few years I have seen many 'home improvement' jobs where people installed panelling in the basement. Biggest mistake you can make if you don't know what you are doing. If you don't put in a proper vapor barrier between the cement wall and the panelling, then you run the grave risk of growing black mold in your basement. That can be deadly, lead to all sorts of breathing/lung problems, etc. and could end up having your house condemned and destroyed as a safety hazard.

If you want to buy a house might I suggest buying one that has an unfinished basement? If the basement looks soooo nice with the panelling and the carpeting is nice and you really want the house then, please, have a house inspector come and remove some of the panelling to check for water leaks and black mold before you buy the house. Your family and your lungs will thank you for it.

As a matter of fact I switched out the first floor bathroom faucet this past weekend. And I only made one trip to the hardware store (a personal plumbing project record). And the new one doesn't even leak.

DIY weekend improvements should:
- Meet your own expectations in function, aesthetics and quality of work.
- Not reduce the value of the house.
- End on Sunday, job finished, cleanup completed...satisfaction in a job well done.

done it, been there..

Pocket doors? Go ahead and do those next weekend. Sliding doors are cheap looking.

That's the ugliest doggy door ever.. be prepared to fork out $1000 to have the door changed before you sell the house.

"... and you'll save time and energy from walking him, (the dog)."

Dog doors are very cool for everyone. However, dogs need walking- every day. Perhaps, the owner needs walking, too, for other reasons; )

You don't need to really spend much in order to change out your curtains. I do think that most options in stores are way, way overpriced, and tend to be skimpy panels. But one trick I learned from a makeover shoot was using canvas drop cloths (the plain kind that you can get at Home Depot) in place of curtains. Just get the kind of curtain rings that have a clip (usually about $3 a set)...and really, you can use any fabric, table cloth, sheet, etc.

The best way to improve my home is to restore the 45% equity stolen from me.

The correct use of the English language would be "too" much. And I don't answer to junk banking apologists or defenders.

One of the simplest home upgrades can save you a lot of money.

Install a new thermostat. One that automatically turns down the heat when the space is less likely to be occupied and turns it back up again an hour before it is used.

Saving money, saving energy, making dollars as well as sense. A win/win situation for very little effort and surprisingly low cost.

A pocket door is a lot more than a weekend's work for anyone who hasn't already hung a few of them.
01:20 PM on 01/15/2012
My response precisely. I would not want to see the results of a DIY pocket door, or any other slding door, thrown up in weekend.

I had my house catch on fire underneath me and my husband one wintery, icebound day, because the owner who built the house installed the fireplace over the weekend. The purpose of doing that? To avoid inspection by the fire department to make sure the installation was done properly. Once brick is laid it's hard to tell what it's covering.

Our former home owner built the fireplace on top of the wood crawl space. So, while my husband and I were icebound and stuck at home we built a fire in the fireplace and the wood crawl space caught on fire underneath us. We lost everything but our lives and consider ourselves very lucky on that count, too.

My husband noticed a puff of smoke rise behind the couch - coming from the air vent - and when he went to check and opened the basement door the air that rushed in gave the fire that breath of life it needed to go to town. The backdraft sucked my husband down to the bottom of the basement stairs in a flash. He's lucky he didn't die from the smoke.

My friends bought a house like that. Former owner was a builder. Nothing met code, not the wiring, not the plumbing, not the fireplace, not the sewer line they had to dig up in the middle of winter.

Glad your husband survived.
