Decorate With Color And Stripes: 50 Do's And Don'ts (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

When it comes to color, an easy way to get a bold look with lots of varying shades is to bring a pattern like stripes into your home. So when Kate Spade named stripes as the pattern of the month, we decided to hunt for some home decorating ideas that involve lots of color and stripes. And, well, we may have gone just a little overboard. You might be doubtful, but we ended up with fifty tips bringing color into the home with stripes. Yes, really. (Believe us, it didn't start out that way.) And the key to the power of stripes? Versatility.

First off, the possibilities with color are endless with it comes to stripes. Want to add drama to a room? Bold contrasting colors, especially in wide stripes, will instantly provide an impressive backdrop. Going for a playful vibe? Multicolored thin stripes can add excitement and fun. Leaning towards something more subtle and soothing? Monochromatic stripes are perfect since they won't be too distracting.

Additionally, stripes can create effective illusions that can greatly change the look and size of a space since the pattern is so directional (left-and-right or up-and-down). That said, vertical stripes on the walls, bold or subtle, will draw the eye up and visually help add height to a space, whereas horizontal stripes will force a side-to-side gaze that will widen a smaller room.

Stripes can also bring harmony to an otherwise busy space. Since stripes are such a simple pattern, just parallel lines, they interact with other graphics especially well. In a room full of florals, adding a striped accent will help ground the organic lines and will pull the different prints together. Even a room full of solids can be disjointed. If you have green, pink and yellow accents, one rug with all three of these colors will immediately unify the space. And one dramatic moment of stripes is often all you need to enliven a room, which means less money spent filling the space with accessories.

Decorate the mantel or a shelf with striped frames. The pattern will captivate and draw focus to the photos, but then the horizontal pattern will push your eye towards other more subtle collectibles. These stripes draw you in but then help highlight the ceramic pelican.

Umm...this is a SOFA. A COUCH is something the Romans used for lounge-type dining re those huge meals they would regurgitate between courses.

Also, way too much print here. Sorry :-(

Stripes are timeless and mix and match well - but sometimes some of these really bold stripes are too much. I have a chair rail in a bedroom and put muted stripes down the bottom half - looks great!

My favorites were the silverware, the glider, and the chest with the striped drawers...all don'ts.

LOL, I thought the chest was cute too! It looked more like a small accent piece than a large chest. Also goes to show styles always come back. I have a very similar large striped decorative plate. Been somewhere in my kitchen for 20+ years! Just went back to look at the silverware. For casual use in the kitchen? Perfect! In fact, the colors match the stripes in MY large plate perfectly! Maybe next time they will ask us for style tips!

lol.....same here! Whoever wrote this must be 'anti-fiesta'. The striped glasses and the silverware are both fiesta ware. I like these items too. :)

I use stripes. When, where, how is my business. Thanks just the same.

FYI ----- hand-crocheted afgan ---- the colors & pattern look fine to me. Try making one of these yourself and find out exactly how much hard work goes into this ---- very time consuming --- and yes I have made this pattern before and planning on making another one again

I agree. My family has several of these made by our great grandmother. I can't think of anything more insulting to her hard work and memory than to NOT have them out where they can be seen.

True. It's a Ripple afghan, and it's supposed to be wavy. :)

I do not do the following, but some of the worst I saw was a striped blanket, in a striped bedroom(the stripe's were in differnt dirction's. Only plaid was missing.). Talk about my head spinning.

More contrast in the picture helps a lot!

I don't know -- but they don't work very well. Stripes come in different colors, and the color is more important. You don't want to put red stripes on your walls no matter how much an intern at huffpo wants you to. The rainbow bench outside in the right place would be welcoming and all kinds of awesome. When your cushions are obviously for patio furniture you don't use them in your window seat. These things matter more.
Do put Alexander Girard stripes on your George Nelson daybed. Thats something everyone can agree on.

I cannot agree with both of you more... the "don'ts" are ridiculous and who in their right mind is recommending that you put striped light switch plates all over your house because "light switches are near impossible to spot"??
05:56 PM on 01/20/2012
After going through this do and don't list I realized I don't really like stripes very much.
