An Open Letter To The 2012 Oscar Nominees (PHOTOS)

HuffPost Social Reading

Dear Hollywood,

Tuesday's nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards got the world a little hot and bothered. Of course we're excited to see talent receive recognition, but obviously we want to see what you're wearing for such a momentous occasion. We've noticed actresses playing it safe -- too safe -- on the red carpets of late, and we can't figure out why. I mean, we can take a guess: are they afraid of ending up on a worst-dressed list? As the people who author one of those lists, allow us to tell you a little secret: they're arbitrary. They're all about personal opinion. If the color doesn't photograph well or the bias cut looks a little wrong or the author just doesn't share your personal taste, there's a good chance you'll get there anyway. About a 50% chance always. So with those odds in mind, we're proposing you do what you, as creative types, do best: get creative!

The Golden Globes was a sea of neutral colored gowns which, while pretty, had us yawning. We yearn for the days when actors showed some personality on the red carpet: Sharon Stone in a GAP button-down in 1999, or Bjork's swan dress in 2001. Extreme? Yes. Boring? No.

And a word to the newcomers amongst you: be daring. You have the rest of your lives to be boring! Rooney Mara, how about some color? Jessica Chastain, you received the news about your nomination at the Armani Prive show in Paris; let the man himself dress you! Look what he's done for Gaga and Beyonce. The couture collections just went down the runways in Paris -- kindly take some cues from the couturiers and make a splash. Why not? People end up on the worst-dressed list for being boring too. Please give us something to talk about on Monday morning. We've given you some specific suggestions below.

Thanks for listening and see you on February 26th . And not just see you, but really notice you too.

Love,

Stylelist

How ridiculous christina anderson. People can wear whatever they like. How about this...why don't you get nominated for an acting award...then you can wear any color you'd like.

Christina, I think you need to get to the circus more often.

You have the nerve to call Hayek's lacy thing 'stunning' then complain about these?

Christina Anderson (author) is a comedian----right? Can you see Meryl Streep wearing those humongous sleeves? Melissa McCarthy in that shirt waist dress? Black under wear under orange lace? Anderson would probably like them all to wear the weird head pieces, too.

no offense, but 6 of those dresses were absolutely horrendous. if that's what you want those talented and already pretty stylish actresses to wear, then i'm glad they 'play it safe'.

Jessica and Sharon Stone look fantastic. I think It's their red hair? I'm a male, 58 years old, married to the same great (blond) girl for 37 years but these red -heads are hot. I was born with red hair myself,- never did care for it much. I guess my Irish ancestors spent too much time in caves?? Anyway, I've got a new appreciation for the strawberry blond set.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE 2012 OSCAR NOMINEES really shows the celebs dressed so safe that you wouldn't even know they are celebrities if you didn't exchange a 2nd glance.. Dress more Bling, sexier cuts, interesting A-symmetric designs just like IAI jeans.

I've never understood the fascination with McQueen; while I have seen a few of his designs that aren't bad, mostly it looks like he hated women and wanted to make them suffer.... literally.

Jessica Chastain would look good in a potato sack.

It was obvious just from reading the headline that a woman wrote this article.
No straight man on the planet has any problems with Miss Chastain's dress.

I'm sure Christina Anderson needs all the help she can get from her wardrobe,
but Miss Chastain could wrap herself in a leopard-print Snuggy and look just fine.

Jessica Chastain looks just fine in the black dress. Her Globes dress, though, had that belt that was so unflattering. With her gorgeous hair, though, she would look great in a color other than black, like a stunning green or even a yellow (yellow would make people's eyes pop!).

"Dear Jessica, you're better than this dress."

Gah, that sounds so high school.

She looks fantastic. Fashionistas are only happy when you do something that looks absurd so they can think it's some type of fabric based performance art. It's just stupid. THey live in this bubble of self importance. Truth is, they are the only ones believing their own stuff. Again, she looks classy and elegant. That's what a star should look like.
