Thrift Stores: Unusual Secondhand Shops Worth Visiting

HuffPost Social Reading

Love it or hate it, large, nationwide thrift stores like the Salvation Army and Goodwill can be a treasure trove for decor finds (especially with our shopping secrets!), but when you're on the hunt for something a little more particular, their sea of merchandise offerings can be overwhelming. In such times, and keeping our useful readers' thrift-store shopping tips in mind, consider product-specific thrift or resale stores. Not only do you have a greater chance of coming across the perfect find, but many resale and secondhand stores donate large portions of their profits to charities and non-profit organizations. Plus, you'll be surprised at what type of items can fill a whole store.

From recycled pet supplies to fully sprouted plants, flip through the slideshow below to find unique thrift stores dedicated to unusual but necessary things.

Personally I feel that goodwill charges way to much for this stuff considering it is all donated. They charge as much as you can find it on ebay infact that is where they base their price because I ask them one time. They have their on site now to auction off the most valueable stuff. I do not think this fair considering all their stuff is donated. What do they do with the money, now many times have you heard what the goodwill did this or that.

I didn't see any guitars that were "deeply discounted" at Music Go Round. They're either priced as they should be and I even saw some that I thought were overpriced.

Some of the major thrift chains with GW in the name are now taking their "donations" and selling them online to the highest bidder. Sounds like a good idea except when you consider that the reason they are doing it is they realized how many people were making a living by shopping at their stores and re-selling. They are putting those people out of business...sounds like big business to me NOT charity. Do you know what GW claims to do with the money they make from running the stores? Where your "donations" are going? That's right they claim to provide jobs and job training. Ironic that they are putting people out of business in the name of providing jobs.
If you want to donate skip stores with GW in the name and go to a local store that keeps the money in the community they serve. Just saying if a thrift store wants to behave like a regular business then they should have to pay for their merchandise and taxes like real business do.
If you know any thrift stores with GW in the name write to them and ask why they are doing what they are doing and where is the money going?

I am glad I am not the only one seeing this. Where is the money going. How we don't know that their is some rich person or person's out there just laughing their heads look at these fools. I do know in this area where I live their is actually donation box all around town that people think its going to help someone but in fact their resell stores getting thier product form these donation boxes you will see around town. It as become big bucks for someone.

What a crass thing to say. Do you think it made you sound cool to say that? How old are you anyway? 10? I'm sorry sweety but you're the sad one here. Nobody has the right to look down their nose at someone elses misfortune ... NOBODY!!! Plus you can get some wonderful items at thrift stores AND you don't have to be poor to like vintage clothing. Grow up!

You are so right LaDonna! Ocala777 is either a very silly young person or an adult snob. I love thrift shopping and have often found upscale, designer clothing I couldn't afford at regular price. (Like a brand new Talbot's rain coat for $8.00!)
Of course, clothing is not the only thing I have gotten in thrift stores. Picture frames, vases, pictures, etc. are some of my favorite thrift shop purchases.

Sorry, but that was an ignorant statement. I am not poor and I shop at thrift stores all the time especially the Goodwill where the profits are contributed to people less fortunate than you, plus I buy and resell a lot of what I purchase for profit, you can find lot's of great antiques and collectibles if you know what to look for and resell them to people who want to pay top dollar for things just because they can and because they would never be caught dead in a thrift store. Another great benefit in buying second hand is that it helps contribute to Earth's preservation by recycling perfectly fine items instead of throwing them in a land fill - now that's embarassing!

If you are anywhere near Manville, NJ, stop into the Closet on Main St. I find so many wonderful things there: clothes, books, dishes, jewelry, holiday decorations, accessories. IThere are incredible finds there and the owner is on priceless human being.

we need to know costs....I love vintages. I usually check prices first before buying certain items. Around me, there are almost all vintages. I like going to thrift or second handed stores which are organized cleanly.

For those of you living or visiting Northern NJ, pop into the Bargain Box in Morristown. It is a boutique style (ie - no bins to paw through) thrift shop that benefits the Morristown Medical Center. Easy to get to and plenty of on site parking. Check it out @ www.wammc.org/Bargain-Box/Thrift-Shop.aspx

You've all heard of Habitat for Humanity, but did you know they have a thrift store? It's called the Re-Store and can usually be found anywhere there is an HfH affiliate. Some of the materials are removed from homes to be demolished or renovated and some are donations from contractors or home supply stores.
All of it can be found at deep discounts from new.
Take a look.... you'll find some amazing bargains there from antiques worth thousands of dollars to supplies for the budget minded. And plenty of knowledgeable people there to help.

I've gone to one in New Rochelle, NY and the place is terrible. It's a very small space but nothing is in order. I know thrift stores aren't exactly the most orderly places but this place just has stuff piled up everywhere and thrown wherever. I haven't been there in a while - maybe they fixed it up a bit.

There's also a Good Will in New Rochelle that sells brand new with the label bridesmaid dresses (which could also be bridal gowns - they're a light taupe color; no one says you have to wear white - prom or Sweet 15/16 dresses) for $25..,provided you're a size 8 of course.
