Foundation How-To: Finding The Best Coverage For Day And Night (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

As simple as it seems, getting your foundation right can be a tricky affair. Figuring out how much coverage is the right amount, matching the shade to your skin tone and factoring in the time of the year (how ever tan or pale you may be) are all things to consider. Some of us prefer a sheer look during the day, but at night, a more even, matte effect feels sophisticated and evening-appropriate. The bottom line is we want it to look natural, even and never cakey. Honestly, the art is in the the application.

We've teamed up with makeup artist Annamarie Tendler who's revealed how to get both a lighter daytime finish, as well as a full-coverage version. Check out the video, then click through our gallery to see which celebs have the "flawless skin" look down pat.

Meanwhile, you'll never guess which beauty brand is debuting liquid foundation.

considering the subject matter, a smiling speaker would be highly appropriate. not one smile here, beginning to end. are we going to a funeral?

Kim K's make up doesnt look too good in this picture. You can see the make up line and it looks too orange. This picture of her shouldnt be featured in this article.

the sponge is so yesterday and wastes product! a foundation brush is so much better and gives an even coverage. when looking at the "artist's" make-up, i had to wonder ....

also, looking through the slides - some of them looked ghastly! and there was beckham ...again the woman does NOT know how to smile!

I agree that this does not seem like anything new or great. I have rosacea and these tips do not work for me. I have tried many brands of foundation and tinted moisturizer and some are awful and some are just so-so.

I love things like this: THE BEST WAY...yes, the best way for that particular makeup artist on that particular person using that particular product on that particular day, when the moon is waxing and the humidity is at precisely 55%.....Give me a break! In the last few years, drugstore foundations have come a LOOOOONG way, and most of them (Walgreens, CVS, etc.) will take returns on makeup, no questions asked. So it pays to try a few shades of a product, find the perfect one, and return the rest. OR, sometimes blending two shades is the best way to get your match. Also- It is almost never necessary to have foundation all the way out to your jawline, unless you need coverage there. the t-zone, forehead, and cheeks (to cover brown spots, etc) is adequate for the majority of the population. Go on one of the trillion makeup blogs to read reviews before you go to the store, and find a foundation that sounds like it meets your needs. A good website with great reviews, also : makeupalley.com. I am absolutely obsessed with makeup, and I want everyone to know that it's NOT THAT HARD!!! Looking great is accessible to everyone, at every budget.

Load the product on the sponge??????!!! I don't know about anyone else but my foundation is expensive, when I have "loaded" foundation on a sponge the bulk of the product stayed on the sponge. Ladies, don't do it....gently use your fingers.......

This had to be the biggest waste of time EVER! There was absolutely no new information given. No helpful hints or tricks whatsoever! What was the point of this video? Oooh... She told us to put on a little less for a lighter look and then a little more for fuller coverage and some powder for a matte look. How ever did she figure that one out?! I was really looking forward to something interesting.

They just gave us 17 pictures of women who are all rich and have perfect skin because of the laser treatments, peels and so on and so forth. Of course they have perfect skin! And by the way, this tip was nothing new. My grandma taught me that.... I am yawning

It might have helped if the 2nd gal washed the oil off her face first.

i was thinking that too, and that's not the fault of the model, but the fault of the instructor. this video looks like it was made by high school students for a midterm project.

The first model you can clearly see the "T" foundation marks left behind using the T method......... yawns!

I have found the most incredible product for glowing skin. The other day I was shopping at a local drugstore and saw Garnier's Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector. The "before" and "after" pictures on the box were amazing, and Walgreens allows you to return makeup if you don't like it (with receipt), so I decided why not give it a try. I was absolutely amazed by this product. I have a somewhat ruddy complexion and this product evened out my skin tone and made my skin look flawless, without that heavy feel you get from some foundations. It also has an SPF 15 to protect my skin while outside. I have never used anything like this before, and I'm still not sure if it's cream or a foundation, but the results are beyond anything I ever expected.

Hmm. These models are young and their skin in perfect condition.

How about having a real person ? Someone is their 50's??? I really think its a waste of my time if you
don't show real women. Come on.
06:55 PM on 02/03/2012
well, women in their 20s are real people, too. i wouldn't say their skin here is in perfect condition, either.

I just use my fingers with a liquid foundation and it looks good.
