Many washers will stop mid-cycle or not even start at all if the weight of the laundry is unevenly distributed. Also, this can cause the washer to "walk" or vigorously vibrate to the point where the machine starts to move.

Great tips. I never thought about the temp. The tap here where I'm renting is a bit leaky for hot water. So I only use cold water. I hope that's not an issue with the quality of washing. We're moving this month, so hopefully I'll be in the clear?

I thought about buying a front loading machine, until I realized that I would have to constantly bend over to do the laundry. Instead, I bought (and am happy with) a top loading machine. Later, I noticed that manufacturers created
pedestals to help sove the "bend & squat" problems of the front loaders. Unfortunately, they charged an extra
$300. to fix their own design flaw. I favor the dryer sheets over the liquid softeners. I use the OLD dryer sheets like a dust rag. They are good for TV screen/monitors and even wiping off your washer/dryer before throwing the sheets away.

Use vinegar as a fabric softner. It also disinfects the clothes and allows you to wash towels with clothes, as they don't get fabric softener on them which causes them to be less effective in absorbing water. Once the clothes go through the dryer, you won't smell any vinegar. Saves a lot of money too.

If you have a newer washer, they now have areas on top of the washer that you can add detergent in one, bleach in another and then one for the softener. It dispenses as the cycle goes.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I DO NOT LIKE the new machines! I purchased the most expensive one made, follow directions to a T, and my clothes are so tangled at the end of a washing cylce! Give me one of the old ones with the agitator any day!!!
10:18 AM on 02/03/2012
We have the opposite results of your new machine with our new HE washer. Uses less water, cleans good, and has many cycles for different items. Clothes, items are loaded first and detergent, softener, bleach are added during appropriate water filling period.

Hi kyrhett,
If you were responding to my above post, I absolutely agree with you re' the different dispensing and cycle options. It's just the tangled mess mostly with sheets and pant legs that drive me crazy.
01:44 PM on 02/03/2012
I totally agree with you tbird.

What is the old saying? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Guess that pertains to my faithful old washing machine . :-) Have a great weekend!

Never ever buy a front loader machine....They seem to have tumbler issues requiring replacement of bearings and tumblers and the smell they have is crazy...Nothing can remove it once you've begun washing for a month or so.

I agree....bought the Maytag Neptune front loading, used it for years and never did like it. It stunk to high heaven even using their special cleaner, and cleaned around the door seal as well. That is what prompted me to buy the top loading. I love the different dispensers and cycles to choose from, but clothes (especially sheets and jeans) are a tangled mess. I wish they would make the old style with the agitator again, and of course keep all the different options.

OMG-- it's not science - turn on the water -- put in the bleach -- then the soap, then the clothes -- then the little fabric softenener thing (if that's what you use)--wash clothes -- put in dryer -- take out, fold, or iron and put away.

Ever since tree huggers and other environmental groups have managed to have phosphate removed from laundry and dish soap detergent which is the actual cleaning agent. Funny thing about phosphate once it has been banned it became evident phosphate does not harm the environment but of course the government will never admit an error of judgment. Soap manufacturer have look elsewhere to keep clothes clean. The whole process became counterproductive because additional chemicals are required to perform the cleaning process what phosphate could do in the first place. Bleach does NOT clean it may harms the garment but the dirt is still present only it’s white.

I agree the enviroment seems to be a bigger concern than our cleanliness and health and safety.
02:04 PM on 02/03/2012
It is also pretty bad to with some of these body washes and soaps and shampoos they took the chemicals out that actually clean, so using them you can even feel like you never even took a shower, but yet they claim you are clean. Don't know how when your still stinky lol.

Ah, it appears they have missed one very common mistake. I've seen a lot of people put fabric softner in with their wash rags and towels, this is a big no no. Why? Because the fabric softner creates a "starchy" effect on towels that will actually repell some of the water instead of absorbing it when your trying to dry off. Try it for yourself, you'll see =)

Using plain vinegar in place of fabric softener will soften towels and not cause the build up. I just use the same amount in the ball as I would softener. You will not smell it after the clothes are done.

I'll try that, sounds good.

Everyone here is correct. Right on the inside of the washer lid it says to put in soap first, then clothes, then turn on water. I usually let a little water run in first though. I feel sorry for anyone that tries to do it the way they've instructed here, just totally stupid advice.
07:02 AM on 02/03/2012
I guess I have been doing it wrong all this time. I put the clothes in and put the soap on top the clothes. Will change that next time. I have a new/used washer and it uses less soap.

No its more like don't use bleach, except if you have to. Go for the color safe stuff.

As far as too much detergent, yeah, remember the bubble machine in the laundry room, AKA measure? who measures this stuff.....

separate your stuff. white does not go well with red. in hot water. which leads to lots of cute pink underwear in the dorms.

start the water, add detergent, softener, add clothes then add color safe bleach. letting the water fill means you might not get as much into the washer as it does shut off at some level and clothes do take some volume.

what the hell, guys don't read how to do laundry anyway. ask my wife......

Is that true or did you hear it on Fox News?

"Allowing the machine to fill with water before adding detergent and clothing will allow the detergent to dissolve evenly and the clothing to be rinsed properly."

Unless of course you're using a front loader and then you just make a big mess all over the floor. lol

Look. God created man. The fig leaf had to be changed / washed. God created woman. Guys do not read instructions. He should have said 'Eat the apple'. No self respecting guy would have eaten it. (OK, its not beer, its not nachos, its not fried, its not buffalo wings....WTF do I want to eat this for????)

Some of the new clothes I have use International symbols for bleach and water temperature and it's worse than trying to read traffic signs on European roads! Personally, I add the powder detergent and non-chlorine bleach powder first, start the water and add the clothes as the drum fills up. My washer is top loading so no HE for me! :-(
