Home Makeover: A Basement Lounge Gets A Very Modern Update (VIDEO)

HuffPost Social Reading

The Homeowners: Cynthia Shipman and Brian Green.

The Dilemma: Brian and Cynthia's new house had a basement with a built-in bar. Normally, this would've made it the perfect lounge for entertaining -- except the space was terribly outdated and dreary looking. The walls featured unfinished wainscoting and a decorative border that resembled peeling wallpaper. Behind the bar, packed wooden shelves made the space look messy. The shelves also didn't make sense, considering the bar itself contained plenty of underutilized storage. An overstuffed couch dominated the floorspace, while wide-backed barstools were both unstable and unattractive.

The Fix: The first order of business was to tackle the walls. Normally, wainscotting goes in more formal rooms--but after trying to remove the panels and finding no backing wall, the makeover had to take a different approach. The easiest course of action? A fresh coat of white paint, which helped make the wainscoting feel more casual, while brightening up the dark room. Then, after peeling away the wallpaper border, the upper walls were updated with chalkboard paint. And while chalkboard paint might seem unusual for a basement, it reflected the fun vibe that Cynthia and Brian wanted to have in the space. After all, it's a space used primarily for entertaining, relaxing and having a good time.

Next, the wooden wall shelves behind the bar were taken down and replaced with sculptural acoustic tiles, which were painted a soft gray for a more decorative feel. This completely transforms the look of the room, functioning both as art and as a way to improve the sound quality of the wall-mounted TV. The geometric pattern also made the vintage touches in the room feel more up-to-date.

Once those major updates were done, all that was left was to furnish and rearrange the space. The arcade games were relocated to a corner, where they wouldn't impede traffic flow. The large couch was moved into another room, and replaced with modular seating. The new armchairs and slipper chairs can be arranged into many configurations, based on Cynthia and Brian's entertaining needs. At the bar, the rickety old chairs were swapped for bistro-style bar stools.

To further optimize the space, a nook by the bar (previously used for a second table and stools) was turned into a buffet area with a stylish console. Its drawers has plenty of space for storing any extra entertaining must-haves. And speaking of bar accessories, a few fancy glasses, a classic cocktail shaker and some silver trays added grown-up flair that completed this modern basement update.

where is a comfortable place to lounge?? 1st rule of decorating, and yes, I am a decorator, comfort! A nice sofa would not have been hard to place in there. And I agree with the other poster that says, there is nothing wrong with a lot of liquor bottles, its a bar and most guys are very proud of them. I give this decorator a C.

It looks much better, but needs more color and where is the comfortable seating. I don't get the seating and the tv. I really don't like bars anyway. who's going to sit there? I think rip out the bar, maybe make a mini-bar in a corner. the rest a cozy rug and cozy sofas and some fun game tables. Let's start over. I do like the white wainscoting and the glass wall. What is a basement for anyway? Maybe a play area for kids. craft area for building things. art studio. What is the purpose of the room. Is it just for drinking and watching tv? If so where are the comfortable chairs?and tables? What's the blackboard for? Are there kids. I think this designer was trying to be clever, which is OK. But Still, what is the purpose of the room?

Love IKEA but this space doesn't flow or feel comfortable. The furniture is great, but whoever designed the space didn't get a feel for the room. The TV is too small and not close enough to the seating area. There's no WOW here.

Who died and made this commentator arbiter of morals? Her comment about the liquor bottles on the shelves was NONE of her business.

Frankly, the room looked no better after her "makeover" than it did before.

"Wainscoting (pronounced Wane-skote-ing, by the way) is no more or less formal than chair rails, crown molding, or any other decorative device, as was proven by the paint job.

It cracks me up when I hear these so-called decorator "experts" make snide comments about what is in the "before" photos, when they have NO idea why something was done a certain way and then "back-track" when they realize that the wainscoting was put there for a specific purpose and they can come up with no better solution.

Though the new look is more refined, it doesn't look comfortable or practical. The seating is way off for it to be comfortable to watch TV, and after an hour on a barstool that has no back it gets painful. A little more thought should have gone into how these people utilize this space.

I kinda preferred the older look... it just felt more casual & relaxed. IDK about anyone else I would want in a basement Lounge/Den. It looked like a nice place to hang out with your friends or just have fun & relax in. The update made it look like an pretentious club. If i wanted to go clubbing I'd go to a fricken Club... not my basement.

Ugly. Should not have painted the wainscott. Needed new bar with nice tile covered wall behind it. Tv in wrong place. Gray slate is dismal looking. Need bright colors. Needs pool table and comfortable seating.

A bit better and done economically; still boring...

Yes it was updated to 1971. Looks like my mom's basement. The bar stools are so wrong. The TV is in the wrong spot. They didn't redo it in a pratical manor. Colors must be changed. This designer needs a pink slip.

It looks better now than before but I wouldn't of chosen those colors. It's too plain and just blah....nothing stands out, it could definitely use different colors and furniture.

It looks pretty good now but I would have changed it to a funky colorful rug rather than that beigy thing.
11:18 PM on 02/08/2012
Looks better except the TV is way too far away form the seating area.
