Zelda Kaplan Dies After Collapsing At Joanna Mastroianni Fashion Show

HuffPost Social Reading

Update: The Associated Press has confirmed, through a Roosevelt Hospital spokesperson, that Zelda Kaplan has died.

From the Associated Press:

Kaplan was a friend of the designer’s stylist, Mia Morgan, according to the designer’s husband, Gideon Lewin, and had attended a number of Mastroianni’s shows.

“I was sitting right next to her. She flopped over in my lap,” said Ruth Finley, publisher of the Fashion Calendar. “The show was just starting. I thought she fainted. Two men carried her out.”

Previously:

Zelda Kaplan, who celebrated her 95th birthday this past summer, collapsed while sitting front row at the Joanna Mastroianni fall 2012 show at Lincoln Center Wednesday afternoon.

The Post is reporting that Kaplan has passed away; we will update this story upon further confirmation.

According to the New York Post, witnesses saw Kaplan "slumped forward" once the show had already begun. Security rushed to her aid, carrying her out of the show where EMTs gave her CPR and put her in a hospital-bound ambulance.

Prior to her collapse, the bespectacled fashion maven was photographed smiling in her front row seat (see photos below). Kaplan is one of the stars of Ari Cohen's Advanced Style blog, which features fabulous fashionistas in their 70's, 80's and 90's.

Known for African-inspired hats and prints as well as her round sunglasses, Kaplan was a world traveler who had journeyed to countries such as Ghana, Ethiopia and Nigeria for both fashion inspiration and women's activism. According to the New York Times, she discussed issues such as a woman's right of inheritance and female genital mutilation with the African villagers she visited.

Kaplan was wearing one of her African-inspired outfits on Wednesday at Joanna Mastroianni's show, the same red and black ensemble she wore last April when she was filmed for Advanced Style. In the video, she imparted these words of wisdom: "One must be interested in the world, not oneself only."

Our thoughts are with Kaplan and her family, friends and loyal fashion fans.

Here's a video of Zelda being interviewed last year by Advanced Style's Ari Seth Cohen:

Below is a photo of Kaplan taken on Wednesday before her collapse, along with photos of her previous appearances.

Admiral women not because of her fashion sense but because of the human rights activities she did for women. Ironic that fashion does a disservice to women more often than not. I'm sure the bra was invented to torture women,if not, you could have fooled me.

The woman was 95 what is so shocking about her death?
04:06 PM on 02/16/2012
paul, why did you click the link if you weren't interested in learning something new? I think the point was that the woman was lively and engaged at 95 and died doing something she loved. Pry that little mind open and learn about that part of the world that doesn't revolve around you!

It was a legitimate question. Maybe Paul asked in order to receive the benefits of your own sage commentary. I know I did. 95, though, seems like the kind of "ripe old age" where death, no matter where you might be at the time, isn't all that unusual. I agree she was unique in dying while engaged in a pastime she enjoyed so well, but, some posting here seem to be confused, too, because they're claiming that's NOT how to go out. Hmmmm. Confusing. I would say anyone at age 95 who is involved in the world of high fashion and loves it, goes out on their own terms, which is, really, the ONLY way to go. I don't know that much about fashion, and I know little about dying, but if clicking on here will get me close to 95, then the click has definitely been worth the energy spent.

What a great job showing off the cloth. I'm interested what she had around her neck in several shots. It appeared to be tiny flasks. If so, what did it contain?

Didn't know that much about Zelda Kaplan, but was familiar with the name. She was certainly very colorful
in style and for someone her age, she was energetic and enthusiastic about her patterns. Condolences to
her family and friends and with that goes many thanks for her contribution to the fashion shows and her
flair for clothes and design. Apparently, she traveled much and cared about others which is a good thing.
Rest in peace Ms. Zelda Kaplan and may God bless your soul.

Talk about staying active to the very end. I hope to have that kind of energy and interest to my last day, preferably checking out at a football game.

someone who most people never heard of dropped dead at 95 what a shock !!!!!!
12:19 PM on 02/16/2012
She sure did not look 95! While she could have collapsed and died anywhere, anytime, she didn't die alone (which is a fear of anyone that old and not be discovered for days/weeks later) but was doing what she loved and with her friends. Prayers go out to the family.
