Michelle Obama in Blue on Veterans Day

The aqua blue ensemble that Michelle Obama wore to the Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday may raise some eyebrows. It was bright and optimistic on a day that was gray and rainy and full of somber remembrance.

Personally, I really liked the coat (identified as J. Crew by the Web site Mrs-O) and its color. But can we talk about the belt?

Michelle Obama has always loved a belt. She wears them over sweaters (remember the transparent Sonia Rykiel belt that was a summer favorite?). Over blouses. Over dresses. And now over coats.

A winter coat is generally made out of heavy fabric, and gathering it with a belt can cause bunching and wrinkles. And even if meant to give shape to a straight coat, a belt can throw off the lines of whatever tailoring there is.

Is a black belt really a good idea here? Why not add a great scarf, pin or fabulous gloves instead to add personal style? Or go with a princess-seamed coat if she was looking for more definition?

During another part of the day she appeared to wear the same belt cinched over a cardigan and her Maria Pinto teal dress, so maybe she was just loving the belt and wanted it to be a part of her outfit no matter what. That's commitment!

Shoe Sales Up Despite Economy

OK, now I don't feel so bad about succumbing to those Via Spiga boots.

The New York Times reports today that shoe sales are up despite the economy.

Shoe sales rose 7.9 percent in October year-over-year and 7.8 percent for September compared with last September, according to figures the Times obtained from SpendingPulse, a MasterCard service.

Retailers and experts offered up a variety of theories about the increase: Shoes have to be replaced so they are an easier purchase to justify; shoes are more fun to buy than jeans (amen!); fall fashions demand many styles of boots.

Whatever the reason, now that I know everyone is doing it, I plan to do my part to get the economy back on its well-shod feet.

I'm headed out to shop this weekend, and may even be brave enough to try an over-the-knee style, now that I know how to wear them.

StyleList Gets a Facelift

Even the best wardrobes need updates. That's why we spent the past few weeks giving StyleList a new look.

We started with the front page, where we now highlight what is new at any given moment. You'll find some nice big photos at the top to point you to our freshest features. Next to that is a live news feed. You'll see our most recent stories there, and clicking on "More Style News" will take you the full News hub.

A little farther down you'll find a new feature we have on all our "hub" pages: "Don't Miss," it's the place where we'll highlight some of our long-time favorite galleries, as well as whatever topics people are buzzing about at the moment.

Speaking of our hub pages -- Fashion, Beauty, Hair, Celebs and Shopping -- you'll want to visit those often, as we'll constantly be adding new features. You can go a level further and explore the subcategories listed on each hub's drop-down menus -- that's where we go in depth on the things we know you are most interested in. One of my favorites is the Denim section of the Fashion hub.

Many hubs also now feature an "Ask the Editor" section where you can ask us all your style questions. And now you'll know who we are, too!

The Emmy for Best Cleavage Goes To...

Most of the fashion on the 2009 Emmy red carpet wasn't exactly out there. But there were quite a women who weren't afraid to put their best assets out there.

Yes, we are talking about breasts.

Padma Lakshmi; Blake Lively; Sarah Silverman; and Marcia Gay Harden (above, clockwise from top left) were among those who took the plunge.

Did it work?

I don't know. Nothing wrong with a little skin; what woman isn't above showing off sometimes? But in some cases, these styles just looked painful or a little scary.

Better to learn how to get a perfect bra-fitting and lift up the girls a little more gracefully, in our opinion.

'Dimestore Diamond' Most Strut-Worthy

Music is one of the most important elements to the theater that is a runway show. It sets the mood, sets the pace and can also set the audience toe-tapping

Michael Kors chose a Lady Gaga mash-up for his Spring 2010 Fashion Week show. Baby Phat was about Michael Jackson. Diane Von Furstenberg went with Madonna. Models at Yigal Azrouel and Charlotte Ronson's shows walked to the Phoenix song "Listomania."

Both BCBG Max Azria and Nicole Miller chose "Dimestore Diamond," a strut-worthy song if ever there was one, from the Gossip's new album, "Music for Men."

"Everybody knows...just where she gets her clothes," goes one of the seductive opening lines. How can you not smile at that as the models trot to the beat?

But we couldn't help but to notice some irony: Gossip lead singer is Beth Ditto, who is proudly plus-size. And this song is clearly about a woman who isn't exactly rolling in cash.

Yet there were the super skinny, professionally polished models, wearing thousands of dollars of clothing, walking along as if she was singing about them.

Intentional juxtaposition? Unclear.

But who cares? I keep catching myself humming the song and strutting a little myself this week. Listen for yourself and try it. You'll see.

Refinery 29's 'Shoe Stalking'

We were just talking in our office about how you really have to have your shoe game going on when you attend Fashion Week. Even the people wearing mediocre clothes seem to be wearing cool shoes, especially in this season of the "it shoe" as The Daily Beast has dubbed it.

So we were really happy to see that our friends at Refinery 29 (they're providing all our Street Style coverage) have a new feature called "Shoe Stalking." They're finding some doozies at the tents, and we salute them.

However, speaking from personal experience, I can say vanity has a price: The crevices between those Bryant Park flagstones are murder on delicate heels. Take the advice of Fern Mallis, SVP at Fashion Week prdoucer IMG, who says she packs flats for this very reason. But good-looking flats, we are sure.

Trendlette - Shoulders

The one-shoulder dress was already headed for the big-time for Fall 2009. Then Michelle Obama wore her white one-shoulder Jason Wu gown to the inaugural ball. Come Spring 2010, the shoulders will get even more attention.

Designers at Spring 2010 Fashion Week are showing not just one-shoulder dresses; but asymmetrical dresses; dresses with two different sets of shoulder straps and dresses with embellishment on the shoulders.

There will be no hiding. Our advice: Head to the gym now to start the overhead presses.

Generally, the one-shoulder look works best the way most sleeveless looks work, on those with toned arms. Women with any sized bustline can wear one-shoulders, but beware which kind look best on you. Busty girls, something structured, please. Those with flatter chests look great in drapey jersey.

Either way, the look is less worrisome than a strapless one. It's a trend we'll be glad to shoulder.

INSPIRATION: Earth, air, fire and water.

BEST LOOKS: Pewter-colored, full-skirted wrap dress; red-orange pantsuit; drapey, body-hugging blush-colored dress.

ACCESSORIES: Stephen Jones hats.

WHO WAS THERE: Milla Jovovich, Bernadette Peters, Patricia Field, Rachel Zoe

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Karan's collection was at once airy and down-to-earth, full of sensuous dresses and suits that had an air of practicality. Karan's line was made of solid colors exclusively -- more versatile for more body shapes, and also a great canvas to show off the clothing's construction. These are clothes a woman who means business wears, but also clothes that will make her feel pretty.

What to Drink at the Tents

It may not look like it, but atttending Fashion Week is hard work. Waiting in long lines with self-important people gets awfully hot, and repeated air-kissing takes more energy than you might imagine. Attending upwards of six shows a day -- often all over town -- then hitting parties at night, shouting above the noise to be heard, is exhausting.

Luckily, there are always sponsors at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents at Bryant Park eager to provide refreshment. After all, what could be better advertising than hundreds of beautiful women and men dressed to the nines, walking down the street with a given beverage in their hands?

Here's a look at some of the drinks being handed out with abandon inside the tents:

O.N.E. Water
Declared as the "official water sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week" this water is packaged in aseptic packaging, which is recyclable. No caffeine here, but definitely the best pure hydration bet. Bonus: No calories! Not only are there big barrels of this water all around the tent lobby, but staff and volunteers hand a water box to you on the way in and out of shows.

O.N.E. Water profits help to support efforts to provide clean, drinkable water around the world. O.N.E. also prides itself on its environmental commitment, and in fact there are recycling bins around the tents. But, please, fashion people, stop leaving dozens of these half-empty cartons on the chairs and floors when you leave a show -- it just doesn't seem in keeping with the point here.

McCafe Coffee
Much was debated in February when McDonald's debuted its coffee at the tents. Would fashionistas deign to drink a coffee-drink that - gasp! - did not come with the green mermaid logo we know so well? Well, it's free and it is there, so the answer is yes.

It's also pretty good, and the people serving it are kind and friendly. I started the week with a non-fat latte (90 calories, unclear amount of caffeine), and thought it did the trick, though halfway through it occurred to me that drinking a full cup of coffee before getting essentially locked into a crowded room for a show wasn't the best idea.

ACCESSORIES: Major tribal tattoo work (temporary, presumably); Nicholas Kirkwood stilettos; and a misty runway of pebbles

WHO WAS THERE: Elijah Wood, Jason Schwartzman, Kirsten Dunst

WHAT WE THOUGHT: The Mulleavy sisters are two of the reining darlings of the fashion world, presenting fantastic collections that often speak of a far-off future where clothing may be a little wrecked, but it sure is pretty. Filled with ripped and wrapped dresses made of fabric distressed in a half-dozen ways, this dramatic collection wowed. You saw it first on the runway, now look for it on the red carpets.

Patrick Swayze's Style

It's not so easy to dissect Patrick Swayze's style. We recall him mostly as he looked in movies, the paparazzi not quite so ubiquitous during the height of his career in the late 1980s as they are now.

We remember him in tight T-shirts, the slightly high-waisted jeans, leather jackets -- really not even examples of good 1980s style.

But, damn, he somehow made it look cool.

The waves of hair and the toned body probably had something to do with that. So did the jawline and the smiling eyes -- yeah, he probably knew a thing or two more about life than you did. But he was pleasant and kind; your mother would like him, too.

What teenage girl in 1987 didn't dream about meeting her Johnny Castle, even if he was wearing sort of high-heeled boots?

There was a reason he was named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 1991. We'll miss him.

INSPIRATION: "Fierce optimism and edgy romance in a palette inspired by the work of Pierre Bonnard," a turn of the 19th-century French painter.

BEST LOOKS: "Passion fruit" colored trench coat; floaty lavender floral dress with a wide V-neckline; floral on black background sequin mini-slip.

ACCESSORIES: Large, brilliant-hued, twisted bracelets by Tracy Reese

WHO WAS THERE: Gabrielle Union, Kim Kardashian, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, Kerri Hilson, Caitlin Crosby, Reshma Shetty

WHAT WE THOUGHT This was the kind of collection that makes an audience cheer, and that is exactly what this audience did. Paint-box colors, easy-to-wear silhouettes, pretty dresses that still have an edge, what's not to love? Skirts that came with loose elastic gathers at the hem were much more appealing than the retro-1980s pouf making appearances elsewhere this fall. An ecru leather mini-trench and passion-fruit trench looked ready for spring breezes. There we lots of vibrant blues and periwinkles, and a little black thrown in for good measure. Tracey Reese's Spring 2010 collection was nothing short of joyful. Even the models sauntered down the runway with hints of knowing smiles. No wonder the audience cheered.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week So Far

Fashion Week will hit its official midpoint today, so here's a little catch-up to get you up to speed:

Spring 2010 clothes look to be upbeat and pretty. Such lovely things from Cynthia Rowley, Vivienne Tam and Costello Tagliapietra among others.
Watercolor prints are everywhere; you'll definitely want a dress like this in the spring.
"Project Runway" alum Christian Siriano shows no signs of being a flash in the pan, putting on a strong show, with inventive designs and crazy shoes. Tim Gunn proclaimed him this generation's Marc Jacobs!
We keep telling you Chanel's green Jade nail polish is hot for fall, but look out for blue nails this spring. We saw them at Derek Lam, Vena Cava and Lorick.
Folks on the street are extremely stylish. Our friends from Refinery 29 are recording the most interesting looks. You can vote on your faves.
Celebs, of course, are looking good, too.

THE VIBE: Very sexy high school jock with a touch of military

BEST LOOKS: Sweatshirt dress with leather shoulders; striped sweaters with sheer stripes; khaki skirt with leather insets

ACCESSORIES: Black and leopard-print peep-toe zip-up booties; gray knee-socks only a leggy schoolgirl could love; formidable sense of cool

WHO WAS THERE: Rachel McAdams, Anna Wintour

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Alexander Wang is one of the critics' darlings, creating collections that often portend where fashion will go. While we doubt many women will want to look like they just left football practice or are about to ship out to a war (via a 1940s time machine), you can bet the gray sweatshirt fabric, khaki military elements and leather paneling will start showing up in more subtle ways next year if not before. Definitely love the idea of classic, salt-of-the-earth basics and this fresh interpretation.

Dreamy, soft watercolor prints are all over the Spring 2010 Fashion Week runways.

Easy to wear, pretty, but more sophisticated than, say, a plain old floral, we expect they'll show up on lots of dresses and blouses at every price point come spring. Start picking out your color palette now.

We love them on dresses, but a flowy tunic or blouse would also look great with white or dark-colored jeans, or really great with white shorts, high-heeled chunky sandals and a big hat.

NB: These prints look best with bold accessories, especially attention-getting shoes, which will keep them from looking to much like something from your grandmother's closet.

Fashion Week is many things -- crazy, hilarious, stressful, self-referential and most of all, great fun.

Weeks of work by legions of people finally culminate in a rapid-fire whirl of shows all around the island of Manhattan, a herd of well-dressed (or at least interestingly dressed) folks chasing after them.

Sometimes they get a chance to sit near or chat with celebrity. Sometimes they get to see a melt-down. Sometimes they get to see a great show. Sometimes they get a dud. And sometimes, when it all comes together, they get to taste a little magic.

Photographer Elizabeth Lippman is capturing some of the excitement of New York's Spring 2010 Fashion Week for StyleList, examining both the precision and the madness of backstage preparation as well as the glitter and the glamour out front.

Runway Review - Nicole Miller

INSPIRATION: "A modern take on prints...Experimenting with new technology and abstracting tradtional craft"

WHO WAS THERE: Amber Rose, Ciara, Amarie, Kara DioGuardi, Jill Hennessy, Beth Ostrosky

ACCESSORIES: No jewelry, no handbags, just super-high, pale-colored, wide-strapped sandals

WHAT WE THOUGHT: "This girl has a tougher edge," read the opening line of Nicole Miller's show notes, and indeed she did. Miller's take on the watercolor print thing showing on runways all over town did look a little more chaotic and stormy. Even her name for it, "digital riptide," evoked a sense of modern confusion, not the soft rain of spring. Biker influence in the form of zippers and leather paired with scuba stretch fabrics. Gunmetal gray was everywhere. But there were also softly pleated shorts and drapey pants. We really loved the white dress with opalescent stripes crossing it from every angle, and the dresses with asymetrical shoulders -- modern and edgy, but also kind of pretty.

VIBE: 1950s tourist meets scissors-happy tailor

BEST LOOKS: Impressionistic floral dresses; dresses with horizontal slashes; skinny black belts with trim in the back; super-cool square sunglasses

ACCESSORIES: Taupe slip-on, tie-up booties with super high heels; high-heel slides adorned with bows; striped clutches; Mamie Eisenhower bangs

WHO WAS THERE: Jill Hennessy, John Bartlett, Erin Lucas from "The City" and several people wearing great hats

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Cynthia Rowley's clothes always have an etheral-meets-modern quality to them and this collection, shown in the ornate Gotham Hall, carries on that tradition. Silk, water-color dresses had a flattering, girlish silhouette. Several dresses in wheat-colored fabrics were trimmed with black; one had a floppy black bow-tie and another a bustier top. Sparkly sequin sweaters looked gorgeous -- definitely great throw-ons for a cool summer night in any resort town. Throughout the collection were dresses with intriguing horizontal slashes, a neat spin on the cut-out idea showing up on several other runways.

Fashion's Night Out - Tee Off

The streets of New York felt a little bit like Halloween last night or maybe a really, really good Saturday night back in the golden boom days of 1999 -- giggling girls teetering in high heels; champagne literally flowing freely; nary an empty cab in sight and traffic gridlock even at 10:30 pm. And did we mention celebrities?

It was Fashion's Night Out, and it seems pretty clear a really good time was had by all. Cheers to that!

But the question on everyone's mind is: Was anyone buying much? More than 800 stores in New York alone kept their doors open until 11 p.m., many with special events, cocktails and celebrity guests. Similar events on a smaller scale took place in major cities around the world.

While the fete was designed to put some fun back into shopping during a blah economic period, it was also supposed to inspire people to open their wallets. No word on an overall tally this morning, though the city's tourism agency says it is working on gathering data.

We definitely saw people with smallish shopping bags, especially when a store offered something new and special, such as Chanel's new Jade shade, which our Beauty Editor Laura Kenney is flashing on her digits everywhere today.

Rachel Roy's pop-up store was also going gangbusters, says Assistant Editor Dana Oliver, who is delighted with the purple, Monet-painting-like trench coat adorned with a bow and fold-down, funnel-neck collar.

One thing that we noticed everywhere were the commemorative T-shirts. Even Anna Wintour -- usually in pretty dresses that have labels other than "Hanes" -- donned one for her visit to Macy's in Queens.

We can't say we are a fan of her very skinny arms -- please eat some more! But Fashion's Night Out was her idea, so we'll focus on the positive and thank her for a fabulous night on the town.

Fashion Week in New York City is one-part spectacle, one-part party, one-part celeb meet-and-greet and one-part chaos. And then there are the clothes, too.
