Amid skyscraper views from The Top of the Rock's 620 rooftop garden in midtown Manhattan this morning, Olay announced country music star Carrie Underwood as the first U.S. brand ambassador for the skincare brand.

The five-time Grammy award winner looked to be right at home in her new role, sparkling in a metallic one-shoulder sheath dress and nude pumps. Yet despite the Hollywood glamour, Underwood said that her beauty outlook is more girl-next-door.

"I started to focus on how I took care of my skin in my 20s, because I don't want to ever do drastic things to my face. It's just not my style, I want to keep it as natural as possible," said Underwood.

Olay has a long tradition as an anti-aging brand, which Underwood knows through a childhood memory.

"As a little girl, I remember my mom always using the original Olay Beauty Fluid and encouraging my sisters and I to take care of our skin. I love that Olay has managed to change with the times, yet stay in touch with women of all ages who want affordable skin care products that do what they promise," said Underwood.

Underwood's endorsement signals a new kind of outreach for Olay.

"We want to welcome a younger demographic who may not yet have the anti-aging needs, but who still want to take care of their skin," said Chris Heiert, marketing director for Olay.

As for her personal Olay must-haves, Underwood says that she has been using the Total Effects line since college, as it's undetectable under her makeup. She also relies on the cleansing cloths to whisk off stubborn eye makeup, which she otherwise has trouble removing without burning her eyes.

And when it comes to her skincare regime, the 27 year-old likes to keep it simple.

"Nothing beats a good cleansing and moisturizing. It really doesn't have to get more complicated than that, no reason to use tons of products," said Underwood.

She sounds like a budgetista after our own heart.

Underwood will join celebrity Olay brand ambassadors from around the world, which include actress Thandie Newton in the U.K., singer and actress Lucero in South America and actress Maggie Cheung in China.

Chance are that if you're a skincare buff, you've seen the Yes To Carrots product line before. A staple on the shelves of retailers like Target, the line brings natural skincare to mass merchandisers across the nation.

Now, the creators behind the brand are turning to the most famous antioxidant of all -- blueberries -- with their anticipated October launch.

Yes To Blueberries is a line of anti-aging skincare that features natural ingredients that claim to improve skin firmness, improve fine lines and wrinkles and hydrate age-wearied skin.

The best part? Products will be budget-friendly even with the high quality, pure ingredients.

"We wanted to provide great, natural skincare for under $20. We're all about the democratization of skincare," director of marketing Elie Foster told StyleList at the New York launch event.

Products like the Eye Firming Treatment feature such exotic ingredients as paracress flower from South Africa, where the brand works with an economic empowerment group so that the buds are sustainably farmed.

The Daily Repairing Lotion contains organic cotton thistle from France that keeps the outer layer of skin moist and luminously supple, and helps boost collagen product for a firmer feel.

The "Yes To" umbrella also includes lines that focus on cucumbers and tomatoes.

But whatever you do, don't throw around the phrase "anti-aging" near the Yes To Blueberries crew.

"We don't call it anti-aging, we call it age refresh. We're a positive brand, and we never want to tell a customer that her skin isn't good enough," said Foster.

The new line won't hit suppliers like Whole Foods until October, but you can pre-order products on the website now.

Clearly, these folks know that we're impatient when it comes to addressing our anti-aging -- err, age refresh needs.

Beauty is beginning to say so long to old-school plastic.

Two of the industry's biggest players -- Whole Foods and Procter & Gamble -- are passing new regulations for sustainable and recyclable packaging that are causing a growing rumble in the marketplace, where other brands are beginning the shift to using renewable materials.

The new Whole Foods regulations go into effect this month, and mandate that suppliers use packaging materials that are easily reused or recycled, are non-toxic, and that they switch from plastic to glass when possible.

"We are strengthening our commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling waste," Jeremiah McElwee, senior whole body coordinator for Whole Foods tells StyleList.

"We have switched to post-consumer recycled bottles for most of our store-brand personal care and nutritional supplement products, and have implemented new responsible packaging guidelines for all of the company's more than 1300 personal care product suppliers nationwide," adds McElwee.

Insiders say that much like regulations on organic beauty products passed by Whole Foods this summer, the new rules will cause many brands to adapt their packaging, regardless of wherever else they are sold.

Meanwhile, supermodel and Pantene endorser Gisele Bundchen announced P&G's plans last month to switch to sustainable packaging made from sugarcane produced in her home country of Brazil. The packaging will make the switch over the next couple of years on P&G's top three global brands -- Pantene Pro-V, CoverGirl and MaxFactor -- the last of which is no longer sold in the U.S., but is still sold internationally.
"This initiative, together with others you'll be hearing about from us soon, will help meet the needs of women around the world who've been telling us that they want more environmentally-friendly products with no trade-offs in performance, aesthetic or value," says vice-chairman of P&G beauty and grooming, Ed Shirley.
While brands like The Body Shop and Stila have long had a history of eco-friendly packaging, the new changes from a giant like P&G signal a change in the mainstream marketplace.

Could this mean an end to the layers of plastic sheeting that infamously seal -- or should we say armor -- drugstore cosmetics? We hope so.
Beauty's Emerging Green Packaging Trend Bids Goodbye to Plastic Bottles originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 06:00:00 EST. Chanel fans, rev your engines.

Keira Knightley -- who has been the effortlessly elegant face of Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle fragrance for four years -- was just spotted in Paris filming the best-selling scent's newest ad campaign on Sunday, and her outfit has been the talk of the town ever since.

Dressed in a pale pink-cream motorcycle bodysuit with matching helmet and bike, the 25 year-old British actress looks one part fashionista and two parts girl power in her perfectly coordinated gear and getup that mimics the color of the fragrance bottle.

The makeup is just as detailed. Pretty flushed cheeks, smoldering eyes and a soft pink pout pop behind a shiny glass face mask -- because why wouldn't you sport a flawlessly painted face for your jet around Paris?
Filming was shot at Place de la Concorde, one of the biggest public squares in the city of lights, which features a dramatic center fountain and is just west of the Champs-Élysées, where we imagine our stylish heroine is en route to for some serious shopping and an afternoon treat of cafe au lait and macaroons.

We imagine she'll spritz on her favorite scent afterwards, which is a blend of mandarin, bergamot, ylang-ylang, morning rose, Indonesian patchouli and tonka bean, vanilla and musk that was created to appeal to the French luxury brand's younger clientele in 2001 -- yet continues to remain a top-seller today.

Chanel is still mum on when the ads are scheduled to run, but we look forward to watching the finished film, with a glass of wine and our favorite Coco-inspired lipstick at hand.
The Avon lady is as ubiquitous to the U.S. as is apple pie.

While the direct sales brand has been around for almost 125 years, recent initiatives like the trend-driven mark and Jillian Dempsey for Avon lines as well as fragrance collaborations with celebrities like Fergie have kept Avon's brand image hip and relevant to current beauty trends.

Erin Dixon of Newport Beach, Virginia has been in the beauty biz for 30 years, and runs her own hair salon out of Newport News, Virgina in addition to supplementing her income with Avon sales.

We asked the businesswoman (whose naturally thick cascading curls we envy) for her savviest secrets on making money while playing with makeup as an Avon rep.

StyleList: How old were you when you fell in love with makeup and beauty?
Erin Dixon: For as long as I can remember! I began my career by opening my own salon, and then became a cosmetologist as well. My first salon closed, but after learning everything not to do, I opened my second salon with plenty of life lessons behind me.

SL: How did you turn your love of beauty into a full-time job?
ED: I've always loved beauty products and helping other women look and feel their best. Avon offers products that consumers can't find anywhere else at an amazing value. I leave brochures out at my salon for customers to read through while they're waiting. Many of my customers have begun a relationship with Avon based on that experience.

SL: What are your top five secrets to running a successful beauty business?
ED:
1. Consistency. Look at any successful chain as an example. What makes chains successful is that they offer the same wonderful experience to consumers time and time again. Being an Avon representative and unit leader means that I have to provide that same great experience.

2. Work smarter, not harder. Make the most of your time. Face it, you won't get much done in front of the TV! Use the US mail to your benefit by developing a mailing list and mailing brochures to clients who you don't have orders to deliver to this week. Bulk mail is cheap, reliable and the client has a brochure to carry around and look at.

Plan your days. Strategically decide how you plan to spend your time and designate specific days for deliveries, pitching new customers, fulfilling orders, and so on.

3. Record-keeping. Keep details of all your products and sales. Not only will records help you out when tax time rolls around, but it will help you grow your business and keep it organized.

4. Try everything! I think it's important for Avon representatives like myself to try out different brands, so we can speak to the points of difference. Clients will ask, "How is this like such-and-such?" You sound much more authentic when you can honestly say you've tried both of them and can highlight key differences.

5. Use the internet to build your business. I love having my very own Avon eRepresentative website, where customers can order products and have them sent right to their door. How easy is that? And my online e-store lets me take my business with me anywhere I go.

SL: What are your must-have beauty products?
ED: My number one must-have is fragrance! Right now, I'm hooked on Far Away. I can layer the skin softener, body powder and fragrance spray, which makes the scent last all day.

Another favorite is the Perfect Wear Extralasting Lip Gloss. It's always in my bag and I have one in my desk and one in my truck too! I love it because I can wear it alone or over lipstick. It makes my lips feel moisturized and I don't have to reapply frequently. My favorite shade is Eternal Rose because it complements my fair skin, blonde locks and light eyes.

SL: How do you use social media to grow your beauty business?
ED: Facebook and Twitter allow me to see what consumers are talking about online and help prepare me for questions they may have about new launches, products, celebrity alliances and so on. I use Twitter to hold contests and to get my customers even more excited about new Avon products. Who doesn't love to get free goodies in the mail?

SL: Why did you decide to stay with Avon instead of trying out another job, with another beauty brand?
ED: When the recession hit, Avon saved the day. I have a bundle of beauty products that could compete head-to-head with the department store brands. My clients were starting to examine their spending habits and were cutting back where they felt they could.

Avon has a long track history in the industry, brand recognition, a solid research team to keep them current, education that rivals universities and a guarantee that can't be beat. I don't have time to reinvent the wheel.

I need to get in there and do what I do best, which is to make people feel good and look good!
Women In Beauty Careers: Erin Dixon of Avon originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 00:00:00 EST. It was a mother's fear that her daughter would end up an ugly stepsister for life that propelled Kre-at Beauty founder Taylor Chang-Babaian to learn how to make the best of what she had and transform into the success she is today.

"My mother was always trying to make me more beautiful because I wasn't naturally pretty," the Korean American tells StyleList, adding that her mom suggested everything from eyelid surgery to diets. "I think I got the pressure from how she grew up. My mom even scheduled surgery during my teen years -- which I never did. My sister was prettier, and was put in pageants. I was the smart one."

The 36-year-old played with makeup to refine and accentuate her unique features, beginning the path that finally culminated in the founding of her very own eye makeup brand, as well as two published books, "Asian Faces: The Essential Beauty and Makeup Guide for Asian Women," and the freshly released "Style Eyes," which focuses on eye tips.

StyleList first glimpsed Chang-Babaian's Kre-at Beauty line earlier this year, when she spilled her secrets to getting Christina Aguilera's lush lashes. (The blonde songstress is a fan of Chang-Babaian's false lashes.) Now Chang-Babaian, who charges less than $20 for most of her products, is debuting her line at Barneys New York, where she will soon branch out to items like mascara and eyelash curlers.

Chang-Babaian focuses on the eyes, she says, because they can go from everyday to red-carpet glamour. Celebrities often wear false lashes, completely changing the look and shape of their eyes. But thanks to Kre-at Beauty, you don't have to worry about looking like Tammy Faye Bakker -- Chang-Babaian designed the strips and individual lashes to be worn either day or night, and by career girls, stay-at-home moms, and celebrities alike.

When going for a more natural look, choose a pair that most closely mimics the anatomy of real eyelashes. "Look for lashes that are varied in length like your natural lashes. I also make half lashes just for the outside corners of the eyes that'll add that extra oomph too," says Chang-Babaian.

As for her recent WWD feature story and Barneys launch, Chang-Babaian is both thrilled and humbled.

"I am super-grateful for all the love. I hope I represent 'You can do it!'"
Asking a woman what she wants is key to her heart -- and Maybelline New York is looking to unlock that special place with new makeup products created in response to customer focus groups.

Fit Me will launch in January 2011, and is made up of a foundation, powder, concealer, and blush that are made to work together as a full face regimen. Three bronzers will also finish the collection.

"Our research tells us that 'the right shade for me' and 'needs to look natural on my skin' remain very important to the 1,000 women we spoke to," vice president of U.S. marketing Ali Goldstein told WWD.

The new face products use what Maybelline is terming "skin merge technology," -- a patented formula that blends quickly and adapts to match skin tone.

The foundation features pigments that are grounded into fine particles and mixed with a translucent base and SPF 18 protection for easy skin-matching. Powders will be labeled the same number as foundations, so picking the corresponding shade is a breeze.

The foundations and powders will be available in a full spectrum of 18 shades, and will retail for $7.99 each. Concealers come in six shades and retail for $6.49 each, and blush and bronzer will retail for $5.51.

And to make things as easy as possible for shoppers, the products will be set out in rows according to shade, instead of by item. So dark powders will be next to dark foundations, next to the blushes and concealers recommended for that skin tone.

Recently signed Brazilian model Lisalla Montenegro will serve as the face for the new line, which we imagine the 21-year-old will appreciate for its exotic range of skin tone matching.

Incidentally, Maybelline closed out August as the top-selling drugstore brand of the month, which insiders attribute to the success of their Instant Age Rewind The Eraser foundation, which was the best-selling new foundation according to SymphonyIRI.

Clearly, us ladies are all about the look of flawless skin.

Is it a powder bronzer, cream blush or cheek stain?

Answer: none of the above.

But we're more than just a little obsessed anyway -- and so, we hear, are top celebrities like Victoria Beckham.

Perfekt Beauty's new Cheek Perfection Gel is a weightless sheer color gel that acts like an airbrush complexion primer, but with the payoff of subtle color that instantly customizes according to your skin tone, and you're seeing it for the very first time here on StyleList.

The soft-finish gel comes in both traditional Blushed and Bronzed shades, which both feel like silk against our fingertips. Since the highly-concentrated pigment isn't mixed with water, the tiniest bead is all you need to blend a sculpted cheekbone or radiantly blushing apple of the cheek.

Ingredients like caffeine stimulate circulation and tone the skin, while niacin increases ceramide and free fatty acid levels for a plumper finish.

Brit "It" makeup artist Rachel Wood says there are unique advantages to using the gel.

"It looks like the color is naturally coming through the skin. It's also long-lasting, which is terrific in hot weather," says Wood. "This product works and adapts with your own natural skin tone, which makes this gel special in comparison to other products."

As for our favorite benefit: it's fast. We hope Mom's not reading, because we admit to blushing up en route to brunch this past weekend -- while stopped at a red light.

"Use a small dab on the apple of the cheek, and work up towards the top of the ear to enhance cheekbones. You don't even need a makeup brush or wedge sponge, the fingers work fine," instructs Wood.

The cheek treats join an existing line of perfecting gel products -- including a fake-it foundation gel we can't get enough of -- and will launch at Henri Bendel and PerfektBeauty.com on Friday, September 10th in celebration of Fashion's Night Out, followed by Sephora.com in October and Sephora stores in November.

But because we hate waiting for beauty goodies that we want now, we've arranged for a special pre-sale exclusive to StyleList readers, plus a complimentary secret A-list travel-sized product with every order!
Jennifer Lopez is looking to spread some of her trademark red carpet glamour to the masses this fall.

The bootylicious star is launching Love & Glamour, a fragrance that takes its cue from Lopez's luxurious movie-premiere style of feline curves, sexy fabrics, and sky-high stiletto heels.

The juice is a sparkling blend of mandarin, nectarine, water lily, coconut orchid, and jasmine petals, with a base of sandalwood, musk, and amber.

Yet most eye-catching is the nude bottle topped with an oversize pink faceted jewel and etched in a sweeping waist-to-hip proportion that mimics the creator's well-known figure. (Maybe she should follow Kim Kardashian's lead and get that famous bum measured for posterity?)

Lopez's fragrance will launch in October and range in cost from $27.50 to $58 for body lotion and eau de parfum sizes, but we've got the goods on a special preview and giveaway now!

Starting today, StyleList readers can score an exclusive peek with this secret link to Love & Glamour's microsite, where you can enter to win your own Hollywood-style pampering, which includes a $500 shopping spree and spa day of hair, makeup, and treatments in the winner's hometown.

And if you feel like you're never the one to win that grand prize, get this: a whole 500 first-prize winners will receive a free Love & Glamour fragrance and matching cosmetics case. Now that's what we call a giveaway!

The secret site will also reveal Lopez's beautifying routine, which the star has entrusted to personal makeup artist/friend Scott Barnes since the beginning of her career.

"From watching Scott do my face for so many years, I'm now a pro at doing my own low-run version of what he does!" Lopez told StyleList earlier this year.

(Skin-care tip: We hear it all begins with a layer of Dr. Hauschka's Rose Cream, which the star nabs at Whole Foods.)

The fragrance ads are equally luxe, with the background shot on an actual movie set, and hair, makeup, and posing done in classic dramatic 1940s cinema style.

Love & Glamour is the seventh addition to the star's already top-selling fragrance portfolio, of which Blue Glow was the most recent launch.

We have a suggestion. Maybe La Lopez can teach us how to smell like multimillion-dollar businesswomen with the next scent?

François Nars is bringing the glamour back to lipstick.

The makeup artist and brand founder has launched a brand new Pure Matte lipstick line, available exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue, with an accompanying one minute long short film that features model Heather Marks.

Dressed in a floor-length vintage Gucci gown, Marks wears the lipstick in a bold, red Vesuvio shade. Curved kaleidoscopic and infinity mirrors create close-up profile shots that would make Norma Desmond jealous, while dramatic electroacoustic music by Polish artist Michal Jacaszek echoes hauntingly in the background.

"The set surrounded model Heather Marks with infinite reflections, and really inspired us to see everything in a three-dimensional world. I wanted the lip to stand out and make a statement with color and texture, while keeping everything else simple," says Nars.

To get the look, dab Enchanted Cream Blush on the apples of your cheeks, and blend Copacabana Multiple on cheekbones to highlight. Then apply the left side of Bellissima Duo Eyeshadow to the center of the lid, the darker side in the crease for depth, and define eyes with Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo.

Finish with coats of Larger than Life Lengthening and Volumizing Mascaras, and a sharp application of Vesuvio Pure Matte Lipstick.

Makeup lovers can also visit the Nars Facebook page where selecting "like" will open up exclusive content on the lipstick launch.

It's all très French, and exceptionally François Nars from start to finish.

It has been over 15 years since the celeb-favored artist launched a new lipstick line. And if it has been ages since you last whipped out your own lipstick bullet, Nars has advice on how to choose your perfect shade.

"A matte lip is very modern, whether nude or deeply pigmented. Try a color close to your skin tone for a universally flattering look," says Nars. "Pair darker hues with a fresh complexion and little makeup. But always choose a formula that has hydrating ingredients to condition lips."

The new line of lipsticks feature shades of aubergine, rose, red, nude, and plum and boast vitamin E, acai oil and wild mango butter for a silky feel that glides on and conditions lips.

And with names like Bangkok, Vesuvio and Volga, it's clear that Monsieur Nars is quite the jet-setter.

Collaborations have also been key to Nars' continued and growing success. The set and art direction were provided by Baron & Baron, while Marks returned for a second time to work with Nars.

Previous partnerships have included client and Brit "it" girl Daphne Guinness, whose twirl on the red carpet in sky-scarping Alexander McQueen heels at the launch of Nars' book earlier this year raised more than a few eyebrows.

Speaking of raising brows, check out the campaign for Nars Pro Prime Line featuring the artist's made-up French Bulldog, Marcel.
NARS Debuts Pure Matte Lipstick With Short Film Featuring Model Heather Marks originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 02 Sep 2010 10:40:00 EST. We've noticed that recent curling iron launches are all missing one thing: the clamp.

These wand-like gizmos, which are most commonly referred to as a conical curler or tapered curling iron, make over-crimped curls a thing of the past.

The clamp-less style allows you to get in closer to the root, for more volume and body at the top of your head (read: no more flat-tops). Varying barrel styles and widths result in curls that are less "perfect" looking, and seemingly more naturally styled.

If you're doubtful because the tool looks strange, so was Chicago hairstylist Amy Abramite. But, after using it an loving it, Abramite says not to judge a book by its cover.

"I bought a flat iron at a beauty show and the conical curling iron was a freebee with purchase. I thought, 'They must be giving this away because it looks weird,' and I had no idea how to use it," Abramite tells StyleList.

"Later, I pulled it out and gave it a go out of desperation when my regular curling iron bit the dust. I have come to love this conical curling iron, and have gone as far as hoarding them in fear that I will one day be without one!"

So how exactly does one wield one of these tricky-looking curling wands?

First, you'll want to put the heat-resistant glove that come standard with any good conical curler on your working hand.

Then hold the iron with the point aimed at the scalp, and wrap a small section of hair down to the wider end. This technique achieves a tighter curl at the scalp, which solves the all too-common issue of curls that go flat and loose shape at the top, advises Abramite.

If you want a traditional curl, simply hold the barrel the opposite way, with the wider end at the scalp and tip pointing away from you for a curl pattern that looks like it came from a regular curling iron or hot rollers.

The creators of the popular Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy are launching a new express version that is cheaper, faster, and requires much less "downtime" than the original.

Keratin Complex's Express Blow Out is a lighter take on their trademark treatment that leaves hair frizz-free for up to six weeks.

The service can be performed in just one hour instead of three, and our writer who tried the original version will be happy to know that you can shower just eight hours post-treatment instead of the challenging three days you have to hold out for the original. (Her boyfriend wasn't too happy about that.)

And the best part: the Express Blow Out will be about 50 percent cheaper than the original silkifier -- bringing the cost to $100 and up, depending on the area of the country and length and texture of the hair being treated.

Frizz-beleaguered customers who are on a budget have been asking for something like this, says vice president of marketing, Lindsey Soloman.

"We understand that in this economy, not everyone can spend $350 on their hair. We don't want them going down the street and getting some cheap one percent keratin knock-off. This quicker, shorter solution allows us to offer the same results for a lower price point," said Soloman at the New York launch event at Sahag Workshop salon.

Like the original, the express version can be used on any hair type -- including strands that have been permed, color-treated and Japanese-straightened.

Your after-care will determine your results. If you're an athletic type who is showering and washing your hair twice a day, the finish may last three weeks. But most can enjoy silky smooth locks for closer to six weeks.

And according to Soloman, busy moms make up a large percentage of customers.

"It's great for moms who need to be in and out of the bathroom in seven minutes and who do their mascara in the car or on the train. They can also enjoy activities with their kids like going in the pool, without worrying about what their hair is going to look like," said Soloman.

But if you're a fan of the original and its longer three month-long results, have no fear. It will continue to be available.

With the U.S. Open in full swing, StyleList caught up with home country hottie Andy Roddick while he was promoting the new Lacoste Challenge fragrance at Macy's in Queens, New York last weekend.

But make no mistake about it. The 27-year-old tennis star doesn't claim to be a style expert.

"My personal style is pretty much what you're seeing right now," Roddick told StyleList with a shrug, while dressed in a gray Lacoste tee with signature alligator logo, a lived-in looking pair of jeans, and dark gray Lacoste cap.

And we're guessing wife Brooklyn Decker -- a Victoria's Secret model and Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition covergirl -- likes him manly, because Roddick's personal grooming is even more low-maintenance.

"There's really no routine. I shave once every ten days. No manscaping for me -- I'm not one for that," said Roddick.

Time most likely doesn't allow for more. Roddick has been stacking training reps on the court daily, and managing a lean protein diet that's supplemented with plenty of stretching and massage to guard against the kinds of injuries that have sidelined him in recent years.

Roddick's model-looks have kept him busy off the court, too. He has been People magazine's Sexiest Athlete, and has most recently signed on as the new face of Lacoste's Challenge fragrance -- though he had previously fronted the brand's line of watches, apparel and eyewear since 2005.

We leaned in for a whiff of the fragrance of the moment. The juice is young and energetic, with tangerine-lemon citrus and ginger notes blended into a masculine woody base.

But for now, it's all about tennis for the U.S. Open competitor. With his hopes high for victory, the Nebraska native has personal advice for anyone watching the tournament who dreams of being a tennis star.

"You can't control your opponent, what your parents are telling you, or what the weather conditions are. But the one thing you can control on a daily basis is how hard you work and what you put into it. It all comes down to your effort level."
High-tech science and nature are meeting head-on in the beauty world.

But instead of clashing, brands have begun to embrace the two seemingly very different ingredient ethos in order to create products that work better and are better for you, a hybrid of technologies and ideologies that the beauty industry is calling the "Nu Natural."

Today's Nu Natural beauty delivers the kind of results consumers have come to expect from their favorite must-haves, but without the controversial fillers of yesterday -- and with the added boost of natural ingredients that many are excited to find produce amazing results.

Taya Tomasello of the trend-forecasting Mintel Beauty Innovation predicted the Nu Natural focus back in January, and will speak about the trend at the upcoming HBA Global Expo in New York, which is one of the industry's top tradeshows.

"There are still many consumers who want to stick with what they know, and the brands they know," Tomasello tells StyleList. "There is also concern that natural anti-aging products, for example, won't work as well as their chemical counterparts. The blending of natural and high-tech opens the 'natural' space to a wider audience."

Another sign of the trend is the explosion of products now labeling themselves with "free from" claims. Yet many of these products still contain potent synthetic actives, along with natural ingredients.

"Essentially, we're looking at products that boast both the benefits of natural ingredients as well as their high-tech counterparts, showing that when they are found together, the potential is greater," says Tomasello.

And this is just the beginning; experts predict we'll only see more exotic natural ingredient pairings with high-tech actives.

"We could see this trend take a step further to provide greater traceability on ingredients -- perhaps even including fair trade certifications when ingredients are specifically sourced," says Tomasello.

Known for its creation by an aerospace physicist as a burn cream for lab accidents, as well as its super-luxe price points, La Mer's newest launch treats the lines and wrinkles incurred by sun damage as "micro scars" of chronic inflammation that destroy collagen. A bio-fermented formula containing marine plant stem cells, antioxidant lime tea and a sea algae and peptide complex targets the areas of skin stress. Colloidal gold -- or nano gold particles suspended in water -- offer a fancy smoothing and firming finish to the serum.

MyChelle Apple Brightening Serum, $44.29

MyChelle's serum rides the current apple stem cell technology trend with a formula that includes power antioxidants resveratrol and organic acai to protect against free radical damage and strengthen skin against future damage. Marine extract Algowhite reduces pigmentation, while the peptide Melanosatine 5 prevents the activation of tyrosinase, which causes the pesky darkness to form in the first place.

L'Oréal Paris RevitaLift Complete SPF 30 Day Lotion, $16.99

If sun spots have mottled your complexion, L'Oréal's newest lotion treats photoaging daily with a blend of pro-retinol A and elastin that unite for rapid cell turnover. SPF 30 is added to protect the results you achieve and prevent future sun damage. The lighter lotion is perfect for normal to oily skin types that otherwise clog underneath heavier anti-aging creams.

Comfort Zone Sun Soul After Sun Face Cream, $28.50

Your best bet for immediate post-sun treatment is a moisturizer that both replenishes and nourishes. Comfort Zone's new face cream uses Argan oil to comfort skin with its natural fatty acids, and biosaccharide gum 2 to reduce inflammation. The narcissus bulb prolongs the cellular cycle, which means improved elasticity. You'll also get a gentle cooling sensation upon application, thanks to menthyl lactate.

Perricone MD More Than Moisture SPF 30, $65

If sun rays have left your skin parched and thirsty, Dr. Perricone's new moisturizer uses soothing olive oil polyphenols, brightening vitamin C, exfoliating alpha lipoic acid and firming DMAE for a full replenishing punch-in-one. Non-chemical mineral sunscreen protection makes it an ideal choice for sensitive skins that react to other UV ray protectors.

Olay Total Effects Moisturizer Plus Cooling Hydration, $18.99

Beach bums can protect skin more effectively with a lotion like Olay's Total Effects Moisturizer Plus instead of just slathering on traditional sunscreen. The moisturizer is a lightweight fluid that uses niacinamide -- or vitamin B3 -- as well as pro-vitamin B5 to restore the skin's natural moisture barrier. Cooling water technology is released upon contact, which soothes sun-stressed skin and refreshes with a kick of mint extract.

Beautisol Pure Peptide Rescue Serum, $120

Formulated for pure sun damage reversal purposes, Beautisol's peptide-packed serum targets collagen creation, wrinkle reduction, and brown spot brightening. Think of it as a heavy-duty replenisher for mature skins who have already seen more than their share of sunny days -- and the after-effects.

Sun Damage Repair Treatments

CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM, $13.99

For sensitive skins who are afraid to try more complex and heavier creams, CeraVe's light lotion is a gentle alternative that still offers the basic sun damage-reversing ingredients of ceramides and niacinamide. Hyaluronic acid deftly hydrates without adding grease or weight to the skin, and non-irritating zinc oxide offers full sunscreen protection.

We've been anticipating Payless' new beauty line launch for months now.

And the bargain shoe retailer will soon ship almost 100 new beauty items to about 1,500 select stores by October, which includes yummy treats for eyes, nails, lips (on one of the first published pictures of the line, above) and body with equally delicious prices.

The items will be sold under The Unforgettable Moments and Zoe & Zac Naturals labels with nearly 90 percent of all the goods retailing for under $10.

Sounds like a sprint through the discount store is about to get even more dangerous.

Unforgettable Moments has its design roots in dyeable wedding shoes at the retailer, and the beauty line will carry similar pastel-shaded enchantment. Expect pretty palettes, nail polishes, lip glosses and fragrance gift sets you'll want to reach for when getting ready for special days and nights.

Meanwhile, Zoe & Zac Naturals takes a cue from the sustainable shoe line it's inspired by, and features recyclable packaging and formulas free of parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate and phthalates. Look for sparkling and fruity body items, lip butters, sheer palettes and even a line of mini hand sanitizers to launch.

"Zoe & Zac is all about keeping the glamour in beauty, while of course taking the extra step to be sure it is good for you and the environment," says a spokesperson for Payless.
These days, it seems like everyone (and their mother) is getting a little nip 'n tuck.

Changing your face can be a risky premise, and unless you're careful about hiring only the most skilled board-certified cosmetic surgeon, you could be left with one of the telltale signs of having had "something done."

Even celebrities aren't immune to falling prey; bad work comes at every price point.

Below, you'll find the top five most common -- and glaringly obvious -- signs that someone has had poor plastic surgery.

And if you're shopping around for your own youth surgeon, be on the lookout for these signs in their before and after photos. If you spot any of them, it's best to quickly move on to a consultation with another potential doctor.

The Nike Swoosh
In a carefully crafted facelift, a good surgeon will lift tissue upwards for a naturally lifted looked that encompasses the entire face. It takes experience and skill, and New York plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Freund says that less adept docs often try to cut corners by just stitching the skin towards the ears.

"A good face lift is a vertical orientation lift. The problem is, many plastic surgeons pull the skin horizontally. The patient ends up with a Nike swoop, more commonly referred to as a windblown look," says Dr. Freund.

The Nike Swoosh -- also known as a lateral sweep -- occurs as the facelift ages. While the two stitched points near the midline and ear of the face remain lifted, the tissues in the middle hang and sag with age -- resulting in that lower part of the swoosh.

The Pixie Ear
In spite of the nickname, the pixie ear is anything but cute. It occurs when an unskilled surgeon cuts poorly during a facelift, and pulls the earlobe down to the face so that it becomes attached to the skin in a seamless angled line that no longer shows a separate earlobe, says Dallas, Texas plastic surgeon Dr. Sam T. Hamra.

The popular discount cosmetic surgery chain -- Lifestyle Lift -- churns out many pixie-eared patients who Dr. Freund says he has had to perform corrective surgery on. The plight is also common among mature silver screen stars who have had face lifts decades ago, when the side effect was even more common.

"I once had to correct a famous actress who had pixie ear on one side, but not the other. She had it done by the most famous surgeon in France. She would always insist that all of her movie scenes be shot on the one side without the pixie ear," recalls Dr. Freund.

Ellen Pompeo and Janice Dickinson both have highly arched brows that look like they may have gotten botox. Photos: Mike Coppola, FilmMagic | Picture Perfect / Rex USA

The Cruella de Ville Botox Brow
The nicknames for this visual are endless -- you'll also commonly hear it referred to as the Joker, the Jack Nicholson, the Diablo Brow and the Mr. Spock Brown. All the clever jabs mean the same thing: you look like you're permanently surprised.

"The unnaturally high arched lateral eyebrow is a dead giveaway of Botox. It usually occurs when Botox is injected in the wrong place, or not injected into the muscle that lifts the brow," says Encino, California facial plastic surgeon Dr. Michael A. Persky.

Fortunately, the over-emphasized arch can usually be corrected by injecting a small amount of Botox into the forehead muscle directly above the brow to relax it, says Dr. Persky.

Less fortunately, by count of the high number of women who regularly sport the look, not everyone realizes that the look is unnatural. Some, like Janice Dickinson, even appear to seek it out.

The 'Done" Nose Job
No where can the over-zealous pursuit of beauty end up more disfiguring than the nose, which can be extremely difficult to correct once the damage is done.

An expert nose job will gently erase what may be considered detractors from the face; things like bumps, humps and a too-prominent presence. But an obviously 'done' nose job will utilize unnatural pinching and nasal angles that just don't occur in nature, says Dr. Persky.

In many situations, the final botched visual will occur after several surgeries have been attempted to placate the wants of someone who just isn't satisfied with their nose. Such is the case with several members of the famous Jackson family, who are just as well-known for their cartoonish noses as they are their record-selling music.

The Country Club Ear Scar
The most common and difficult cosmetic surgery giveaway to hide, light white scars can often be seen in front of, under, and especially behind the ears.

"This is the big one, and you'll see it all over the country club tennis-playing circles," says Dr. Freund, who also adds that many women stop wearing ponytails after having a facelift that leaves them with scars.

The stubborn marks occur when surgeons pull the skin towards the ear to make it look taut, and then stitch it down. It's a simple and quick technique to employ, but more often than not, does leave obvious scars.

"The right way to do a face lift is not just to pull skin -- you'll look good for three months, but then the skin will drop again and you'll be left the same, but now with scars. The muscle should instead be repaired and an extra incision created under the chin so no one can see the mark," says Dr. Freund.
The Five Telltale Signs of Poor Plastic Surgery originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST. Heidi Montag has admitted that she's having some serious plastic surgery regret.

The 23 year-old reality star, who is best known for her extreme ten-surgery makeover, has said that she wants her G-cup breast implants removed.

"My boobs are crushing me. I have major anxiety about it," Montag told Life & Style.

The blonde beauty reportedly came close to overdosing on hospital painkiller Demerol during her recovery, and says it was all too much for her ex-husband Spencer Pratt to handle.

"No one wants to be taking care of his wife who looks like she'd been in a horrific accident," said Montag, who also added that Pratt "begged" her not to go under the knife in the first place.

Not only can super-sized breast implants come with emotional baggage; New York plastic surgeon Jennifer Walden says that there are heightened health risks as well.

"A higher rate of complications is more likely. This is due to the irreparable skin and tissue damage that can occur with the stretch caused by an implant that extends outside of the natural dimensions of the chest and breast," Dr. Walden tells StyleList.

There are also long-term considerations that need to be taken into account with extra large cup sizes.

"Bottoming out," or an unattractive skin stretch on the lower part of the breast, is common. There could also be difficulty with mammography, a risk of rippling with implant visibility through the skin, and a chance of extruding or wearing through the skin, resulting in an infection, says Dr. Walden.

As for a safe and attractive option that Montag could downgrade to, a slightly full cup size could enhance the feminine shape of her body without overdoing it.

"I think Heidi would be great with a moderate to full C-cup. Looking at a woman her height and weight, this usually equates to around 300 to 325 cc's," says Dr. Walden -- referring to the unit of measurement for breast implants, which is done in cubic centimeters.

Yet in a tragic twist of fate, the plastic surgeon who performed all of Heidi's ten original cosmetic surgeries was killed in a car accident just last week.

It could be part of the reason why Montag also tells Life & Style that she wants to leave tinsel town for a quieter life in Costa Rica.

"I just really want to get out of Hollywood. I don't have anything back home: no family, no friends," Montag told the magazine.

And when it comes to cosmetic surgery, Montag says that chapter in her life is closed for now.

"I won't get anything done again. At least, not for a long time."

While Montag had no choice but to admit her obvious plastic surgery, a recent study found that many people hide their procedures from friends and loved ones.

We all know that too much sun exposure ages us.

But chances are, unless you spent the summer bundled under a caftan, straw hat and gloves, you more than likely got your share of UV rays - precursors to the brown spots, uneven pigmentation and premature wrinkles that are the telltale signs of sun damaged skin.

The good news? If you start treatment today, you can effectively rewind the clock on your recent skin sins.

"It's much easier to refinish a piece of furniture when it is slightly damaged, as opposed to seriously damaged. So, begin your treatment plan immediately," advises Los Angeles Dermatologist Ava Shamban.

There are two different types of sun exposure-induced damage -- the dull skin and brown spots you see immediately following, and the wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and skin cancers that can surface years down the road. "At the cellular level, the lag time between sun exposure and damage is about two hours, but the deeper visible effects may take years to show up -- like with high cholesterol and heart disease," Dr. Shamban tells StyleList.

New York dermatologist Neal Schultz recommends five steps to target both levels of sun damage. "Gently exfoliate, bleach out the browns, use antioxidants nightly, moisturize liberally and often, and use sunscreen daily, all year," he told StyleList.

Exfoliating will clear away the dull, clogging and matted dead cells that were killed by the sun's rays. Look for a gentle glycolic product with about an eight percent concentration, which is touted to spur your own cells to create collagen -- the structural protein that can add volume and plumpness to skin.

"Chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid give much more consistent results than physical exfoliants like scrubs or at-home devices," advises Dr. Schultz.
La Mer The Regenerating Serum, $250

Known for its creation by an aerospace physicist as a burn cream for lab accidents, as well as its super-luxe price points, La Mer's newest launch treats the lines and wrinkles incurred by sun damage as "micro scars" of chronic inflammation that destroy collagen. A bio-fermented formula containing marine plant stem cells, antioxidant lime tea and a sea algae and peptide complex targets the areas of skin stress. Colloidal gold -- or nano gold particles suspended in water -- offer a fancy smoothing and firming finish to the serum.

Sun Damage Repair Treatments

Beautisol Pure Peptide Rescue Serum, $120

Formulated for pure sun damage reversal purposes, Beautisol's peptide-packed serum targets collagen creation, wrinkle reduction, and brown spot brightening. Think of it as a heavy-duty replenisher for mature skins who have already seen more than their share of sunny days -- and the after-effects.

If you're experiencing brown spots or blotches, use a topical bleaching product at bedtime to help fade away the pigmentation. Dr. Schultz recommends products containing any one of these ingredients for best results: hydroquinone, kojic acid, Actiwhite, Achromaxyl, Whitonyl or Dermostatyl.

Antioxidants can help treat the more dangerous, longer-term effects that can lurk inside of your skin cells for years. While antioxidants come in a wide range of exotic fruits and herbal extracts, vitamin C continues to test the most effective for sun damage. But make sure you're using a stable form of the power vitamin for potent results, which you'll see referred to on ingredient labels as tetrahexadycyl ascorbate or methylsilanol ascorbate.

And above all, wear SPF 15 to 30 sunscreen daily and don't forget to moisturize first.
Marc Jacobs just came out of the closet on his hair transplant.

In this month's interview with Details, the fashion designer known for his hip-luxe styles confessed that he underwent a hair transplant in May, and it was even more painful than getting tattoos.

"I didn't cry over those," Jacobs says in the Details story, referring to how much worse the hair transplant was than the tattoos. "I couldn't sleep on my side, and I couldn't put my head back."

According to Jacobs, his new hairline is part of self-induced makeover that he started three years ago, when he overhauled his diet and exercise routine and started taking care of his skin and hair.

Jacobs now enjoys regular facials, full-body massages, mani's and pedi's as well as a full skin care regime that includes Dr. Brandt Time Arrest Eye Serum, Joëlle Ciocco cleansers, toners and moisturizers and Yves Saint Laurent Teint Parfait Complexion Enhancer #7 to conceal the dark circles under his eyes.

No surprise to us, given how much Jacobs likes to party.

We hear the primping designer also gets his teeth whitened at the dentist's office once a year, and uses a special Rembrandt toothpaste that is formulated to lighten up tough smoker stains.

And not surprisingly, the finishing touch is always the designer's newly minted Bang fragrance, which Jacobs says he strategically blended with pepper and white moss.

"I always smell like smoke. I happen to like the smell of fragrances on smokers," Jacobs told Details.

The Bang campaign was equally smokin' and filled with plenty of controversy. Eye creams, eye wrinkle relaxers, even stickers that claim to make your eyes look bigger.

When it comes to eye-enhancing beauty products, we thought we had seen it all.

But this week in New York City, Beverly Hills-based facialist Ole Henriksen -- who has an eponymous, cult-favorite skincare line -- launched a product we've never before laid eyes on: An eye peel.

That's right, a chemical peel for your eyes.

The concept itself seems counterintuitive; since the tissue around our eyes is so thin and delicate, most exfoliation products recommended to avoid the eye area, or face redness and irritation. But Ole Henriksen claims that the formula for Truth Is In The Eyes, which is available for $65 at Sephora stores nationwide and on Sephora.com, is gentle on the eyes, yet big on results.

"It's the very first peel system designed expressly for the fragile eye region. It's formulated with gentle Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) to exfoliate away dead skin cells and encourage cell turnover and renewal, dramatically reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles," Stacey Webb, director of marketing for the brand, told StyleList.

The AHAs at play are glycolic and lactic acid, which are both known for rapidly increasing the body's natural rate of cell turnover. That translates into a lessening of fine wrinkles, and preventing new ones from forming.

The eye serum also contains micro algae, soy and rice bran protein to firm skin, boost collagen production and improve circulation to reduce dark circles and puffiness.

We're intrigued by the before and after shots of clients (example below) who have used Truth is in the Eyes, which the brand says are completely untouched.

Instructions say to apply a thin layer around the eye area nightly, taking care to avoid the lid. Because the peel's sole mission is to exfoliate and renew, you'll still need to follow up with an eye cream for moisture needs.

Henriksen's Sunset Boulevard store front was the first west coast spa to introduce microdermabrasion treatments years ago; could the skin guru be on to the next big spa trend?

Speaking of which, find out about the next generation of chemical peels.
Ole Henriksen Launches a Peel...For The Eyes originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 16:30:00 EST.
