Old Versus Young Makeup

Who: Sandra Bullock
Real Age: 45
Old Makeup Age: 45
Young Makeup Age: 35
We were so happy to see Sandra Bullock looking lovely on the red carpet (right) for the New York premiere of Blind Side on November 17, 2009. Especially after her last big red carpet walk, at the LA premiere of All about Steve on August 26, was a total disaster. The 45 year old star, who usually looks years younger than her actual age, looked messy and overdone thanks to too-light highlights, a disheveled updo, and too-thick eyeliner and mascara that drew attention to the wrinkles around her eyes. But last night, Bullock bounced back with chocolate brown locks that complement her skin tone, deftly applied eye makeup, feather lashes and a natural lip color. It's amazing what a difference a little beauty smarts can make - we're guessing Bullock learned from her past mistake and hired a new hair and makeup team.

Who: Demi Moore
Real Age: 46
Old Makeup Age: 47
Young Makeup Age: 37
Fountain of Youth: Soft Waves

It's no secret that - as Ashton Kutcher would attest - Moore is a MILF. The raven-haired beauty is as striking as she was when she first hit the big screen in the mid 1980s, but in a recent photograph (left) she appeared older than her normally youthful look. Besides displaying bunny lines (which we recently learned are the scarlet letter of Botox), her slick straight hair looked severe, and her overly bronzed, matte complexion looked a little lizard-like. With loose waves (right), and more natural looking skin, Moore looks softer, younger and, well, a little closer to her husband's age.

FilmMagic | Getty Images

Who: Evan Rachel Wood
Real Age: 22
Old Makeup Age: 30
Young Makeup Age: 22
Fountain of Youth: Softer hair and makeup

Evan Rachel Wood has always been mature for her years. Since she entered the spotlight at age 11, she's chosen tough, serious roles over the usual teeny bopper fare. But that does not mean she needs to look overly mature, too. On the left, Wood's slicked up hair, matte skin and smoky eye pairing adds years to her look. At right, Wood looks classic, no doubt, but in a fun, youthful way that's appropriate for a 22 year old.

Getty Images

Who: Candice Bergen
Real Age: 63
Old Makeup Age: 68
Young Makeup Age: 60
Fountain of Youth: Bangs

Bergen looks amazing for her age, no contest. But, it's interesting to note how different she looks with bangs (right) and without them (left). "Bangs can make you look younger," says says Luke O'Connor, Suave Celebrity Stylist and co-owner of Lukaro salon in Beverly Hills. "Pick a style that accents your face to soften and bring out your best features." In Bergen's case, a side swept fringe takes years off her look.

Who: Courtney Love
Real Age: 45
Old Makeup Age: 45
Young Makeup Age: 35
Fountain of Youth: No eyeliner

Nobody - we repeat, nobody - over 35 should wear smudgy liner. The dark pigment will pile up in the tiny wrinkles beneath the eyes, making them look that much more pronounced. She looks worlds younger with clean under eyes and big lashes (right). Granted, her lipstick is still clowny. But hey, it's Courtney Love - we'll take what we can get.

Theo Wargo, Getty Images | Soul Brother, FilmMagic

Who: Katharine McPhee
Real Age: 25
Old Makeup Age: 30
Young Makeup Age: 23
Fountain of Youth: Natural hair and makeup

McPhee recently traded her long, dark wavy locks (right) for a short blonde crop (left). And while we're all for risky haircuts, in this case we think the obviously artificial color piles years onto the singer's look.

Theo Wargo, Getty Images | Paul Morigi, WireImage

Who: Diane Lane
Real Age: 44
Old Makeup Age: 54
Young Makeup Age: 34
Fountain of Youth: Highlighter

Lane is the poster girl for aging gracefully, but even she occasionally gets her makeup wrong. Keeping her face matte calls attention to the wrinkles around her eyes (left). Adding highlighting powder to the arches of her eyebrows, the temples, and the apples of the cheeks creates a dewy glow, and leaves her face virtually line free (right).

Jim Spellman, WireImage

Who: Tyra Banks
Real Age: 35
Old Makeup Age: 40
Young Makeup Age: 29
Fountain of Youth: Staying true to her skin tone

When Banks fights her coloring by applying foundation that's paler than her natural caramel complexion, she adds years to her face (left). But a base that matches her skin, paired with earthy tones and nude lips that play up her golden glow, makes the Top Model judge look young enough to walk the runway (right).

Getty Images

Who: Katherine Heigl
Real Age: 30
Old Makeup Age: 40
Young Makeup Age: 25
Fountain of Youth: Sparkly details

There's vintage-inspired and then there's just plain old fashioned. At left, Heigl looks older and out of date in formal set hair and dark pink lips. An accessorized updo and light sparkly eyes (right) are a much better complement for the newlywed.

Michael Buckner, Getty Images for PCA

Who: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Real Age: 39
Old Makeup Age: 50
Young Makeup Age:34
Fountain of Youth: Bare skin

Only a few months away from her 40th birthday Zeta-Jones looks phenomenal, but judging by the photo on the left you would never guess that. Too much base actually accentuates her small wrinkles, but when she goes nearly bare faced she proves that natural beauty doesn't fade with age.

Collective sighs of relief were heard world wide (or at StyleListHQ, anyway) upon seeing Sandra Bullock's smart look (above, right) at last night's New York premiere of Blind Side.

Because after her last red carpet appearance -- the premiere of All about Steve on August 26, pictured above, left -- we were ready to write off Miss Congeniality as a style train wreck.

The 45 year old star, who usually looks years younger than her actual age, looked overdone and, well, a tad trashy, thanks to too-light highlights, a disheveled updo, and too-thick eyeliner and mascara that drew attention to the wrinkles around her eyes.

Which was sad, because Bullock is better than that.

But last night, she bounced back with chocolate brown locks that complement her skin tone, deftly applied eye makeup, feather lashes and a natural lip color. She looked classic and beautiful - not to mention about ten years younger than her actual age.

Two days, two very different takes on purple eye makeup.

Yesterday, we gushed about Rihanna's gorgeous plum liner, nude lip pairing. The pale lips balance the bold eye makeup, and the warm shade of purple complements the singer's golden skin tone.

Unfortunately, Leighton Meester's take was not nearly as successful. The Gossip Girl star wore a cooler violet tone to last night's American Eagle Outfitters Times Square Opening, paired with perfectly penciled red lips and matte, pale skin. The jury at StyeList HQ is out on whether this look is more witchy (Inspired by the Twilight New Moon premiere, perhaps?) or Barnum & Bailey (cue circus music here).

With a few small tweaks, this Meester's makeup could have worked.

If her lips were a little lighter and not so perfectly penciled - but applied more like a stain - the hint of color would play off the violet eye makeup without looking overdone. And a little bronzer would have helped avoid the "I want to suck your blood" effect.

Also, a different shade of purple would look better on Meester. A warmer tone, like eggplant or plum, would help highlight the green and yellow flecks in her brown eyes and warm up her skin tone.

Bottom Line: Purple makeup can look gorgeous on anyone -- just make sure you use the right shade of purple for your skin tone, and pair it with a subtle lip!
Purple Eye Makeup - Rihanna's Hit, Leighton's Miss originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 12:25:00 EST.
Light vs Dark: The Olsen twins display the power of lipstick. Photo: Michael Loccisano, Getty Images

Last night, The Olsen twins demonstrated the power of lipstick.

On the red carpet for MoMA's Second Annual Film Benefit, Honoring Tim Burton, Ashley paired nude lipstick with subtly smoky eyes, while the more daring Mary Kate opted for a bold, wine-tinged shade that's right on trend for fall and winter.

While both of their looks are gorgeous, since the Olsen twins are, well, twins, you can really see how different a bold versus natural lip makes you look.

Mary Kate's dark lipstick highlights the angles of her face, and makes her skin look pale for a very sophisticated look. Ashley's natural lip draws attention to her eyes, and helps her skin tone look more golden. Paired with tousled hair her look is very La Dolce Vita.

Beauty pointers to consider when picking your holiday party makeup looks!
Olsen Twins Wow in Contrasting Lipstick Shades originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 11:33:00 EST. The sandy pinky shade she chose made her skin glow and looked gorgeous with her long, dark lashes and sparkly white eye shadow. Hats (or should we say clothing) off to Eva for nailing the naked lip - nude shades are often hard to pull off, as the wrong tone can magically turn your skin gray in a single slick.

Which is why we've created the handy column called Lady Gaga Math to try to make sense of her wild styles.

Gaga wore today's look on November 14th to the star-studded MOCA NEW 30th Anniversary Gala. Sure, her hair was topped off with a major embellishment, and there happened to be blood dripping beneath her eye. But we barely noticed, because quirky-crazy details like these are trademark Lady Gaga.

What did get us talking were her baby doll-shaped lips - she's worn this stylized look before, but never in blue! A madcap combination of the periwinkle pout that makeup artist Tom Pecheux created for Doo.Ri's Spring 2010 runway show, and Edward Scissorhands' stylized, kewpie-doll like lips (and thier hair kinda matches too), Gaga's latest lips are icy cool.

What do you think? Are Lady Gaga's lips a A little too Ice Queen, or something you'd wear. And if so, here's a tutorial on how to score them.
Lady Gaga Math - Baby Doll Lips with the Baby Blues originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 15:15:00 EST. These aren't your mother's hot rollers.

Today's hot rollers are made for styling your hair quickly and without a blow dryer. And although they may seem complicated, hot rollers can actually help save you time when you want to create a refreshed, voluminous style in a jiffy. Instead of being locked to your hair dryer for a half-hour blowout, take 10 minutes to insert hot rollers, and while you're waiting for them to cool you can do other things - like applying makeup or getting dressed, suggests celebrity hair stylist Danielle Caputo.

Ballerina buns are one of Spring's biggest hair trends.

Now, these aren't the super slicked, ear-pulling buns you paired with white tights and pliés in your childhood ballet class. The buns we saw on the spring runways were very "I don't care," worn, we imagine, by a slacker ballerina who's late to practice because her motorcycle broke down.

They're perfectly imperfect, full of "wispy imperfections" as lead hairstylist Anthony Barrow told us backstage at Charlotte Ronson.

Already glimpsed on New York City's downtown set, (we were admiring a model type's wickedly wound creation in a NoLIta bar over the weekend), Cameron Diaz is the first celebrity to wear the trend on the red carpet.

She wore the hair style last night to the premiere of 'The Box' in New York City, with face-framing wisps of hair and a golden statement necklace. Which works, because the great thing about subversive ballerina buns is that there are no rules. It was seen on runways as different as Charlotte Ronson, Lanvin and Ruffian, and paired with fashions that ran the gamut from frilly frocks to glamorous suits.

So invest in some bobby pins and practice your rusty bun winding techniques. You're a ballerina, and you're bad to the bone.
Cameron Diaz Wears a Ballerina Bun originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 17:15:00 EST.
Feathered Friend: Agyness Deyn's lashes may fly away. Photo: Getty Images

Model Agyness Deyn gave Lady Gaga competition in the wacky department at last night's ACE Awards.

The raven-haired British beauty wore a pair of feathered false lashes on her lower lash lines, to create an effect that could only be described as "sad clown."

Well, sad, goth, clown.

While the creativity was all Deyn's doing, she may have been inspired by Lady Gaga's current influence on makeup. "Lady Gaga is known for her 'sad' makeup," MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Romero Jennings told us at a recent photo shoot. "The shapes always go downwards."

A few companies sell flutterly lashes like these -- Sephora Black Feather False Eye Lashes, $15; Make Up For Ever Strip Lashes in 116 Jane, $15 -- which can be used on the upper or lower lash lines for different effects.

To recreate Deyn's look, first trim the lashes to fit the lower lash area before gluing them on - this easy tweak will make the application process much easier.

And for the full effect, we suggest blowing it out with a trendy pair of fangs.
Agyness Deyn Does 'Sad Clown' in Feathered False Eye Lashes originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 13:30:00 EST.
Victoria Beckham hit the basketball court with her family this weekend sporting a cute new hair style.

Her hair was wavy and tousled -- a pretty, softer look that's in stark contrast to the geometric, stylized looks the star has become known for.

Posh has been quietly growing her hair out over the last few months -- trading 2008's short pixie for a longer, straight piece-y 'do earlier in the year, and now, waves.

See the close up of Beckham's new 'do, along with other celebrity hair styles we love, below.

Getty Images

Rihanna's Trendy Crop

In order to pull off this songstress's daring cut, elegant features and a bold stroke of confidence are a must. "Rihanna's pixie cut showcases her high cheek bones and long neckline," says the star's stylist, Ursula Stephen. "What's great is that it's so low-maintenance all you need are regular trims and a great pomade!"

Getty Images

Katie Holmes' Classic Crop

The perfect mixture of easy maintenance and elegance, this cut is, "very convenient for on-the-go soccer moms who aren't afraid of stilettos," says Michael Murphy, Color Director at NYC's Eiji Salon, who has worked with Mrs. Cruise. "It's modern and glam, and is perfect for both heart-shaped and thin faces with hollowness at the jowels. Stay away if you have a full face - it'll exaggerate the roundness," adds Murphy.

Getty Images

Gwyneth Paltrow's Blunt Shoulder Bob

Reinventing herself this year, this busy mom's new style looks amazing worn both curly or straight. "This cut is a refreshing departure from her older, longer hair that was dragging her face down. The shorter length is more uplifiting and draws attention to her delicate features. It's perfect for oval, diamond and square shaped faces," says NYC Salon Owner & Stylist Mark Garrison.

Getty Images

Reese Witherspoon's Growing Out Bangs

If you're growing out bangs, look to this starlet's clever new cut to see how it's done gracefully. "The sexy waves are useful for growing out bangs because it adds flowing transition to the different layers of hair. Cut your bangs to an angle so they sweep easily to the side, and use a lightweight gel and side part to help them stay put," advises NYC Salon Owner & Stylist Mark Garrison.

Getty Images

Jessica Biel's Layered Shoulder Bob

Jessica's round face is slimmed by the playful layers of an above-the-shoulder bob, which also shows off the star's sexy shoulders. While this cut works beautifully for sweetheart and round face shapes, stay away if you're one of those gals who has to be able to quickly pull her hair into a ponytail; the flyaways can be especially testy.

Getty Images

Jennifer Lopez's Modern Farrah Fawcett

If you're fickle and love to change styles often like Jennifer, a length and cut like this lends itself to trying new looks. "It has movement, softness and sexiness all at once, but allows you to create because there's a lot of hair to work with," says Juan Carlos Maciques, celeb stylist at NYC's Rita Hazan Salon. "If you want to offset strong or prominent features, this cut will soften your look," suggests Maciques.

Getty Images

Christie Brinkley's Long, Classic Layers

Who says you have to cut your hair after you're 40? This supermodel shows us that long, healthy hair looks great at any age. "This sexy, rock and roll cut allows Christie to keep her length and maintain versatility for different styles. My signature "valiage" highlighting technique where I brush highlights on without foils also lifts her skin tone," says Brinkley's stylist, Ricardo Rojas of NYC's Ricardo Rojas Salon.

Getty Images

Debra Messing's Layered Curls

The key to this red-headed raven's locks are long piecey layers and a youthful center part that makes her look "hippy chic," says her longtime stylist, Suave Celebrity Hair Stylist, Luke O'Connor. "There's no limits as to who can wear this look because it flows past the chin and frames the face wherever you want it to," adds O'Connor.

Getty Images

Jessica Alba's Face Framing Bangs

Sexy and touchable, Jessica's bangs are "wind-swept and not perfectly laying across her forehead," says her stylist, Robert Ramos. Ramos suggests blow-drying bangs from side to side with your fingers in order to get the tousled effect. Bonus: the long layered cut works on just about every face shape and hair texture, and the styling possibilities are endless.

Blackface is making headlines for the third time in as many weeks.

The upcoming issue (#62) of V Magazine will feature model Sasha Pivovarova in dark body and face makeup, in an amorous embrace with relatively pale model Heidi Mount.

The spread is accompanied by the quote, "Black is the new black," from James Kaliardos, Creative Director, L'Oreal Paris International, who created the look as part of the feature "Beauty 2010" for which V asked the world's leading creative directors, makeup artists and hairstylists to define what's beautiful for the new decade.

"2010 sounds like the future, and this is what it will look like," touts the magazine.

This is hot on the heels of last week's "America's Next Top Model" episode which featured the contestants painted in varying degrees of dark makeup to depict bi-racial women, and last month's critically debated issue of model Lara Stone in blackface for the October issue of French Vogue.

Last week, we polled StyleList readers on how they felt about the use of blackface on "America's Next Top Model," and out of nearly 21,000 readers, 53% thought the photos were a beautiful celebration of bi-racial women and only 11% found it offensive.

We're interested to see if readers feel the same way about this instance in V, or if it brings up parallel concerns with French Vogue's use of blackface: Why didn't the magazine use a darker-skinned model instead of painting a white model black?
Continuing the resurgence of a makeup practice long considered taboo, "America's Next Top Model" featured a number of models painted with dark makeup to resemble bi-racial women.

On the episode, which aired tonight (Oct. 28), host Tyra Banks said the goal was to create an editorial celebration of the "Hapa" (that's Hawaiian for mixed-race) children of immigrants who relocated to Hawaii to work as sugar cane farmers in the mid-19th century. Barack Obama is the most famous Hapa.

Banks tasked models with interpreting exotic racial combinations like "Russian-Moroccan," "Native American-East Indian," and "Botswanan-Polynesian," photographing them herself in the green reeds of a sugar plantation on the island of Maui.
The models -- Jennifer An, Nicole Fox, Laura Kirkpatrick, Sundai Love, Brittany Markert and Erin Wagner -- were styled in clothing stereotypical to the ethnicities they were asked to portray. For example, Markert, who was "Native American-East Indian," was dressed in a feathered headdress and a sari. And Love, as a "Russian-Morrocan" was styled with Russian Ushanka hat and a large walking stick.

Then, the models were sent to makeup, where each was painted with varying degrees of dark body makeup to match the perceived skin tone of the corresponding race they were conveying.

This is the second time models have been shown in dark makeup in recent weeks.
Continue reading Blackface on 'America's Next Top Model'

Blackface on 'America's Next Top Model' originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 01:15:00 EST.
Thanks, Mom: Kate Hudson is set to age like her mother, Goldie Hawn. Photo: Getty Images

She's already been implicated for your forgetfulness of song lyrics and your adult acne, and now, you can wag your finger at mom for your wrinkles, too.

A recent study has found that mothers and daughters age in a strikingly similar pattern.

"Studies of facial aging up to the present have largely been observational and subjective," the team from Loma Linda University Medical Center in California said in a report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

"This study applies state-of-the-art facial imaging and three-dimensional computer modeling to measure changes in the aging female face."

The study examined 10 sets of mother-daughter pairs aged 15 to 90 to measure changes in the aging female face, and found that volume loss in the lower eyelid began when women were in their mid-30s and progressed steadily through life. And if a mother demonstrated this type of sagging, her daughter was likely to as well.

But don't give up your face to destiny just yet - thanks to breakthroughs and education we know a lot more about avoiding aging than our mothers did at our age.

The most important fact is that sun is the number one cause of aging and SPF is essential. Also important to a youthful appearance: Avoiding cigarettes, eating healthy diet, and finding a wrinkle cream that works for you (we suggest a Derm-prescribed Retinol or a strong antioxidant cream) and sticking with it.

So mom's off the hook on this one - If you experience premature wrinkles, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Age-Defying Beauty - Expert Tips

Who says it's all down hill after 40? Many of Hollywood's leading ladies reach their career - and beauty - peaks at at 45, 55, even 65. So we asked four beauty experts, who are over 40 themselves, for advice on the cosmetic needs of mature women - like hair styles that shave years off your look, the best makeup shades for older women, and skincare that can reverse aging (really!). Read on to get your biggest age-related questions answered, and look absolutely fabulous at 40 and beyond.

OUR EXPERTS: Rona O'Connor (left), Celebrity Colorist and Co-Owner of Lukaro Salon in Beverly Hills. Sandy Linter (middle), acclaimed makeup artist and Lancôme Beauty at Every Age Expert. Luke O'Connor, Suave Celebrity Stylist and Co-Owner of Lukaro Salon Beverly Hills. Dr. Doris Day (not pictured), author of Forget the Facelift and Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at NYU Medical Center.

TIP: WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN
"It's so much easier to prevent the aging process with daily sunscreen use than to try to repair it after the fact," says Dr. Doris Day. For an optimal anti-aging skincare routine to ensure gorgeous skin like Meryl Streep's, Dr. Day recommends looking for products that contain wrinkle-fighting retinoid, anti-oxidant vitamin c, anti-inflammatory niacinamide and skin-soothing caffeine.

Mark Sullivan, WireImage

TIP: YOU CAN REVERSE AGING
Simply using sun protection and avoiding excess ultra violet rays allows your skin to naturally repair itself. An anti-aging skincare routine will amplify results, for skin that looks taut and even like Vanessa Williams'. "Adding dermatologic procedures like chemical peels or laser treatments can then dramatically improve your skin further," says Dr. Day.

Joe Corrigan, Getty Images

TIP: INVEST IN A PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT
Choosing the right doctor-administered treatment depends on your age, and if done correctly, can give spectacularly age-defying results (Exhibit A: Madonna's complexion is better than that of most 30 year olds). In your 20s, Botox prevents aging by freezing muscles from wrinkle-causing motions. For moderate aging, injectibles like Restylane and Juvederm beautifully though temporarily fill volume loss. For older pigmentation damage and wrinkling, the Fractional CO2 laser known as the "Total Fx" is the gold standard for skin resurfacing, with downtime as little as five to seven days, says Dr. Day.

Anita Bugge, WireImage

TIP: TRUST A PROVEN ANTI-AGING CREAM
We asked Dr. Day for her favorite age fighters: "Olay's new Pro-X Hydra Firming Cream contains peptides, which increases collagen production for firmer skin, and niacinamide, which accelerates cell renewal to both treat and reverse past skin care damage. Clinique Superdefense Age Defense Moisturizer SPF 25 combines an anti-oxidant punch with full spectrum sun protection, and comes in special formulations for different skin types."

Clinique | Olay

TIP: WEAR NATURAL MAKEUP SHADES
Stick with muted taupes, coffees, creams and blacks to enhance the shape of your eyes, and be wary of high shimmers that can accentuate lines. For a pop of color, choose either your cheeks or lips to highlight - but be careful not to choose a vampy dark lipcolor as it can age you, advises Sandy Linter, Lancôme's Beauty at Every Age Expert.

Leon Bennett, /WireImage.com

TIP: SWITCH TO CREAMIER MAKEUP
Take a cue from Jane Seymour and pay attention to texture, not just color in your products. Lip items should be moist and facial products like foundation and concealer should be creamy instead of thick so they don't migrate into lines. "You have to like the way it feels when it goes on," adds Linter.

Jason Merritt

TIP: KEEP LIPSTICK IN PLACE
For lipstick that lasts like Sophia Loren's, always line with a neutral pencil first, and then fill in your lips to provide a base for color to adhere to. Next, apply a moisturizing lip color that is rich, not runny, to the lip. If you want to add a smidge of gloss, apply only to the center bottom lip so as not to over-gloss, says Linter.

GREG WOOD, AFP/Getty Images

TIP: DON'T SKIMP OUT ON MAKEUP
The biggest cosmetics mistake older women make is to not wear any makeup at all, says Linter. Age draws some of the natural color out of skin, so even a light application can do wonders to refresh and re-engergize a face, a la Christy Brinkley's glowing complexion. "Products have improved drastically over the years - don't be afraid to go to your local beauty counter and experiment!" adds Linter.

Jason Kempin, WireImage

TIP: BANGS MAKE YOU LOOK YOUNGER
"Bangs can make you look younger," says says Luke O'Connor, Suave Celebrity Stylist and co-owner of Lukaro salon in Beverly Hills. "Pick a style that accents your face to soften and bring out your best features." A soft fringe or side swept bangs, like Angela Basset's, are both very youthful.

Hair gel has come a really long way, even though you would never guess it by Megan Fox's overly slick hair at the 2009 MTV Awards.

The star went overboard with her hair gel, using it to create a faux mullet -- a look that works on fashion-forward runways, but looks wet and a little weird on the red carpet.

Megan's damp 'do aside, if you've sworn off hair gel in favor of other styling products, the gals from Glamour magazine are asking you to give it a second chance.

The crunchy technicolor goop from decades past (think hot pink LA Looks gel, circa 1990) has been replaced by high tech formulas that can help achieve any style you desire - from natural voluminous to wet and sculpted.

In the gallery below, Glamour shows you why you'll want to give the gel trend a try (again) -- this time without the stirrup leggings, overteased hair and snap bracelets.

If you're growing them out or you're just tired of your fringe, change up your look like Christina Ricci did by slicking back your bangs. Coat your hair with gel, twist bangs to the side like she does here and secure with a bobby pin for that super-sleek finish.

WireImage

DON'T let crunchiness cramp your style.
While we're used to seeing her with sexy curls, Megan Fox is just as stunning with a sleek center part and pulled-back 'do. For a smooth gelled finish like Fox's-without having to worry about any crispiness and dry flakes-senior stylist Nicole Descoteaux of Butterfly Salon in New York City says, "Never let gel air-dry. Instead, mix it with an oil-based product-like Shu Uemura Art of Hair Silk Oil --or a styling cream to prevent it from looking hard and retro."

DO give your hair that poolside feel.
Nothing's hotter than slicked-back hair after a quick dip-consult one of the many slow-motion postswim movie scenes guys love. OK, maybe they aren't focused on the hair during those clips, but Victoria Beckham looks pretty damn sexy here with her smoothed-back cropped cut. This might be the fastest, chicest red carpet hair, well, ever!

Getty

DON'T model your hairstyle after Marge Simpson's.
We've gotta give gel props for helping to defy gravity, but hair this high and hard makes getting into cars and through doorways a major challenge.

DO try a slick side part.
Go from girl next door to super glam with a budge-proof, sophisticated side part. This look from Tommy Hilfiger's fall show is as easy as it is chic. Use a fine-tooth comb and a flexible gel (like Bumble and Bumble Gel Multi-Talented Sculpting Medium) from your part to ear level and leave the rest goop-free. The contrast between the two textures is what makes this look so fashion-forward-even if you aren't walking the runway.

Mark Leibowitz

DON'T Saran Wrap your hair.
While this slicked-back bump is totally cool on the catwalk, leave the plastic wrap for your sandwich and opt for a great headband instead.

WireImage

DO modernize a classic look.
Gwen Stefani never gets it wrong. While she's working her signature old-Hollywood red-lipped pout, the gelled French twist gives her look a futuristic feel-not to mention major staying power! To get a red carpet updo that lasts and lasts, try Pantene Pro-V Style Classic Total Control Maximum Hold Gel.

DON'T be afraid to add a sleek touch to your sweet ballerina look.
Toughen up a chignon by making it slick like the models on Collette Dinnigan's catwalk in Paris. This will keep your hair in place from day to night, whether you're wearing a tutu or rocking a badass leather jacket.

According to L'Oreal, we could all be kissing our gray hairs adieu in a mere 10 years.

The beauty company is working on a breakthrough treatment geared towards ending gray hair for good. They expect it to consist of an oral element backed by a hair care range, and be available within 10 years, reported the Daily Mail.

Hair gets its hue from melanocytes, pigment cells that give color to both the skin and the hair.

"When hair goes gray, there is a progressive disappearance of the melanocytes from the hair. While there are still melanocytes in the hair, there is still hope that it could be re-pigmented," Patricia Pineau, L'Oreal Research Communications Director told the paper.

"Hair is an enigma," she added. "It's a fiber, a material with physical properties. It is also a living organ that grows, grays and falls out. How can we fight this?
